Final Fantasy 7 Remake Announced (First on PS4)

My wishes:

Battle system:
-Choose classic turn-based system, active system kinda like XII, or action like KH at game start
-Summons being a better strategic focus
-Keep the Materia system as is with some modern tweaks

World:
-little to no pre-rendered BGs. Go full new-gen.
-No World map. Make the game open-world instead, like XV. Just imagine walking up on a full sized Junon Harbor, or Gold Saucer in an open world.

Misc:
-It needs to keep that 90's SquareSoft feel somehow.
-Flesh out the characters more.
-Keep that shitty Advent Children VO and dialogue OUT of this game.

As awesome as all of this sounds I feel asking for a seamless open world is asking for a lot. I wouldn't mind how it originally was just in full 3D camera and full 3D backgrounds.

Battle system like X-2 is doable I think.

1. I love love love how the more this sinks in, the more we're all realizing what an insane undertaking this is.

2. Yet anyone that thinks it isn't possible needs to go play Dragon Age Inquisition RIGHT NOW. Obviously there are major differences but just think how beautiful and fully realized that world is, how many little quirks and Easter eggs, the many hundreds of voices and unique NPCs, the amazing dragon battles...

3. SE can do this. Holy shit. If EA can do it, imagine SE when all the major work (story boarding and plot and game mechanics) are already largely in place. Holy shit. SE can do this!

Using DAI as a reference isn't really instilling confidence for me.

I wonder how much side quest stuff we'll get? Like if Ruby/Emerald weapon will come back.

HOLY CRAP WHAT ARE SUMMONS GOING TO LOOK LIKE?

Does anyone else think the E3 2005 Final Fantasy VII technical demo trailer was better than the newest one? :p Better in the sense that it was literally the opening of Final Fantasy VII whereas the newest one was quite different.

I don't like FF7 pretty much at all, but I'm still pumped about this. This is possibly the only way we're going to see a huge, classic style FF with a massive budget. My one hope is that they severely tweak the battle system. Do something besides Limit Breaks that make characters unique and don't let the player just blank slate everyone and transfer Materia around to make a party. The characters should be the most important thing to level, not the materia. It bugged me how much the Mat system made character progression feel worthless.

I am very excited about this. I am inclined to believe, however, that SE is going to limit the scope of the game quite dramatically in order to focus on quality -- that's really the only way I see them being able to pull it off, and it follows SE's output over the past decade.

You lost me right here.

And in regards to the open world, Why not? and it doesn't have to be seamless

It'll be interesting to see how they go about the gameplay. Personally I'm hoping for an ARPG take on the combat similar to FFXV. Though I'd be fine if they kept it the same since the original gameplay was fun too.

I like his role in FF7.

I dislike his CC stuff though.Too melodramatic in the end and too snow-esque otherwise.

I hope for a dehumanizing, grusome death like in the original.
Completely disagree (actually I agree that his role in the original was well done).

If there's one thing they did right with Crisis Core, it was fleshing out Zack as a character imho. The ending especially so. Made way more sense given that he was a 1st class soldier.

So, I got a Steam account and bought FFVII out of nostalgia. Wow. Didn't realize the pixels/polygons looked so much smoother on the PC version. Haven't played the game in over a decade or so, so this should be fun.

What's wrong with it? it was pretty good. Ah it could be done like Shenmue open world but still restricted into zones.
My bad I thought you meant like XV.
I did mean like XV. Only, I'm ok with it not being seamless.

For X-2 battles? NO. Shit was a cluster-fuck garbage heap IMO. Too hectic.

He's got a baby face and if you look at Nomura's original anime-ish art, it shares similarities with both Tifa and Aerith's faces, both with the really rounded face and big eyes. I think he was MEANT to look like a convincing woman while in drag.

stop using creepy advent children human esque porcelain dolls as a reference for how Cloud looks.

Assuming they'll use at the very least a modified version of the XV tech, an open world seems perfectly doable. Do we know how big XV is even going to be? The impression I've gotten from seeing the demos and trailers make it seem like it'll have quite a few large areas. Assuming SE can put even more resources into VII-R, an open world the size of the original VII all of a sudden doesn't sound near as crazy as it used to.

To my mind, X-2 battles are god-tier. Interrupting enemy attacks, order and strategy but never plodding. Doesn't get much better than that.

Btw, do people still play the online Final Fantasies? (XI and XIV) How are they? Never played a MMORPG, but would maybe be curious in the future.

So how will they handle overworld and battles? Should we expect the same simpler models while running around compared to battle? Or will they go all out like FFXV? And I guess all this depends on if we transition into battles or if enemies are visible on the map.

And they can't do full VO in this right? Insane. I'm fine with text only, then I won't get mad at shitty VO performances. And doing text only will save time and money.

FF14 is insanely popular right now and has a massive expansion coming this month.

For someone who wasn't really an MMO guy, I found it amazing. Has a great story and is very solo-player friendly

I didn't get a chance to post this yesterday because GAF was down, but the way I felt as this game was being announced was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Obviously there are other exciting things in life, but this felt weird and different. Good, obviously (obviously). Euphoric. I was incredulous. I sat in my chair mouthing NO NO NO NO NO until I eventually just stood up and watched the entire thing. I was clutching my phone so tight that I ended up buffing a little of the polish off the back.

It's been so long. I've wanted this for so long. I can't even explain what this game means to me. I don't know how to explain without being sappy or uneconomical with words, so I guess I won't try.

The way they flashed the senior staff's names on the screen with the voice over and the music...this still doesn't feel real. Now that it's finally happened, I can't even understand how I felt the way I felt before.

Thank you to everyone at Square Enix for finally making this happen.

Ohh ok I understand. That's not a bad idea.

I have a feeling they're going to use the same VA as usual. But I am with you on the text.

I had a similar reaction, I think the trailer is one of the best put together reveal trailer I've ever witnessed. It captured everything I loved about FF7. At first I was like there's no way they're gonna remake it then I saw the kid on that slide in the playground then I knew, I just knew.

My point of realisation was the cars driving on the highway, I immediately recognised their design.

I wasn't excited about the remake at all until I watched the trailer and saw all the subtle things that brought me back to 1997.

I feel you, man.

This game means a lot to me, and there aren't many that do. It's the game that got me into JRPGs. It was one of the first games I was able to buy by myself. I played with a group of friends, that I'm still really good friends with, and every time we met up we'd talk about where we were, the things we found, our materia combinations.

I didn't want to believe that this was real, not after so many times. But as I watched the trailer, heard the music, I could only smile. Amazing. So fucking amazing.

This sort of was my reaction when Persona 5 was announced. P4 occupies a very similar place in my heart that FF7 does in your's. I may not share your adoration of VII, but I love seeing people just get super stoked about something. It's what makes this hobby super cool.

I still can't believe this is actually real. A whole day later. Still hasn't sunk in yet.

What a crazy, crazy good E3 this year. Wow.

Remake Cloud's going to look like post-AC Cloud. Though, both examples, original anime-ish Cloud AND post-AC Cloud prove my point just fine. Both were made to be prettyboys that would make believable women given the right circumstances.

This in every way. The feeling I got when I watched Midgar in today's graphical fidelity while seeing all of the major stay members return from the original flashed on screen and the speech over the footage is indescribable. Even now, the entire announcement (Even for TLG and Shenmue III) seems so unreal.

Would I be right in thinking that Cloud from the new Dissidia is a better idea on how he might look in the remake?

Just make it look more like the Nomura design as opposed to Amano.

Nice post. I screamed as hard as I did when patriots won super bowl as I did when they announced this. Just did not expect it at all. The trailer reveal was awesome.

Nostalgia. It's been around 15 years since the last time I ran through FF7 and boy did that trailer strike the right cords. Instantly took me back to the first time I played FF7 at my buddies house in 1997.
