SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Posted? The Kickstarter was a deal between Sega and Yu. Is Sony's involvement being blown out of proportion?

In an interview with Engadget at E3, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida explains that the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter was a deal worked out between series creator Yu Suzuki and Sega, who holds the rights. When Sony got wind of the project, it decided to boost the campaign at E3 for a very simple reason: “That’s great PR.”

I hope the western version have that guy only. I have the Dreamcast Version of Shenmue 1 and 2, and here in Europe the game is in Japanese and i like the voices. The VA in English is horrible, if they add VA in english i hope thers an option to switch to Japanese or English.

I do hope they offer an option just so people can play it the way they want it.

Hearing "cost reasons" scares the shit out of me. I want this to be the game Suzuki had always wanted to make, no compromises.
there are always compromises in game development.

that said, if people want to get closer to the full experience yu suzuki wants, bump up your pledge to reach the stretch goals.

Wouldn't it be easy to get even more funding by releasing a Shenmue 1+2 bundle on PSN soon? I don't think money is that much of an issue seeing how much goodwill they have. If Sony plays the hype machine right, this could potentially be a big success.
that's in the hands of sega, not ys.net or sony.

The Japanese voice actors with English sub is the best approach, however, I can't ignore the fact that there are people out there that grew up with the English voices and love Shenmue for that, so I would definitely include English V.O as a stretch goal along with explanation.
i wouldn't mind an english dub, if only to say thank you to people like corey marshall who have been active in keeping the series alive. whatever anybody thinks of his performance, the guy is by all accounts pretty nice and gets involved in the community.

Suzuki-san...DO IT.

Does Suzuki have much of a relationship with Corey Marshall? They can't all be as tight as Kojima and Hayter.

Really, I thought it would be Japanese VA with English subtitles, so we are getting English VA? Whelp, no more concerns from me.
I'm not 100% sure but I'm assuming it's a given...the first two games reached the states with English dub, I just can't see them releasing it in Japanese with only English subtitles...

I mean, the very first footage we've seen had the characters talking in English, not Japanese, though obviously not finalized. I'm fairly positive it'll have English VO.

I think there English main cast VAs should be in ShenmueIII as well. Sure, the voice acting was rigid and laughable at times but it's so charmingly campy. My first experience with the game was with the English voiceover as it was the only option for north america. It's something near and dear to my heart. Especially Ryo's voice.

Seems like Ben Judd knew about Shenmue 3 being Kickstarted and had to rush the Bloodstained Kickstarter campaign to avoid getting drowned by the Shenmue hype.

Proof that he knew, he wrote that 4 days ago on the Bloodstained comment section

unless english V.A appears as a stretch goal down the line, i don't see that happening for cost reasons.

that's fine though. i quite like the japanese voices, as endearing as the english dub is.

I can't imagine the English VO for past Shenmue games cost that much lol. It was uhhh.... Unique. And I'd love for the new Shenmue's VO to be just as cheesy.

I hope they update the controls. I'm playing through the old games and what sticks out to me most is how I can't turn left or right without walking partially forward. It never bothered me before, but nowadays it's really jarring.

It's kind of sad to see people removing their pledges, I'm seeing the ticker go down more than going up at some moments now. EDIT: Not to mention that the predominant Shenmue 3 thread is now discussing Sony's involvement. Crap.

They had a lot of egregious spending. The voice actors (at least the main cast) were flown to Tokyo and lived there a couple months to do the recording.

Eh people acting like this is their first kickstarter.

The pledges will go up and down again an again.

Not going to get discouraged about cynical losers who would have the perfect be the enemy of the good. Do you want Shenmue 3 to be great or not? If you do, pony up a few bucks! If you don't, that's fine too.

I'm preaching to the choir in this thread, but yeesh. Of all the things to be cynical about.

Aren't pledges pretty much just pre-orders for the game?
Yes.

Except instead of a retailer holding the money, it actually goes towards the production of the game.

I had to check to see when you said this, whew, it went up about a thousand dollars in the last 10+ minutes I looked, I was getting worried there for a moment.

People are really dumb. Support the damn game.

Comments like these make me want to withdraw my own pledge. People do with their money what they want, not what YOU want. And calling people "dumb" or "cynical losers" because they decided that they have higher priorities than a video game after all is just horrible.

Why would people on a forum make you want to withdraw a pledge from a game being developed, due to something people had an opinion with people pulling pledges from in the first place?

Some may consider this sacrilege, but I've always considered Yu Suzuki the 'Akira Kurosawa' of the game industry. Their respective abilities to craft experiences that redefined their industries, combined with their abilities to push the boundaries of their art forms to levels never seen before always seemed unique to me. Plus, the parallels between the later part of Kurosawa's life and his inability to secure funding (until George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola stepped in) always seemed to parallel Yu Suzuki's struggles with Shenmue III to me.

I always was afraid that like Kurosawa, he would not be truly appreciated in his lifetime, and that it wouldn't be until his passing that people began to realize the profound effect he had on the industry. Thankfully, the day has come where Shenmue III can be completed. Hopefully, this will begin a career revival that will allow fans to continue to enjoy Yu's work for years to come.

You're misreading what I wrote. I'm not referring to everyone who doesn't pledge -- it's absolutely your money. If you don't want shenmue 3, don't feel obligated to pledge. I mean, this is common sense, right?

There's a certain group that are apparently outraged that this kickstarter might get additional sources of money from elsewhere. Those people I have some issue with (mostly due to the implication that yu Suzuki is being dishonest or has somehow wronged them by finally figuring out how to get this game made...)

They have to bring back Corey Marshall for Ryo, he was in the first two games and heck they even brought him back almost 10 years later for Ryo in the Sega all star racing game.

I don't like that people get pressured like that by a community to pay money for something they do not actually want or can afford right now. I would not want to be part of that.

I just realized I can't actually understand the first sentence of what you wrote at all. Sorry about that.

No worries. It's shenmue 3! Everybody's emotional!

What i meant by "perfect being the enemy of the good" is that while it'd be great if the game could be funded in a pure, "perfect" way (e.g. without platform exclusivity, etc)... the reality being less perfect is a miniscule worry next to the fact that somehow, after 14 years, this game might finally be happening -- and that we have the power to make it a better game (!) simply by pre-ordering a copy (!!)

So the community aspect is important? If you really feel that way but do want the game, you could just keep your pledge but not discuss it in forums. I couldn't care less about the haters, but that's not getting in the way of me putting some money down. Me does not = them.

You can do what you want with your money, but I think removing your pledge because of the news of Sonys involvement is dumb. If you need the money for real world commitments then by all means you should have never pledged to begin with.

I'm just glad that they have access to all the Shenmue I and II assets. Surely they can reuse some of that stuff and save a bunch of money in the process.

i think the clips from all stars racing were just archive sound, i'm not sure they got him into a recording booth

They still are dishonest. For example the Kickstarter page says Xbox/Linux (and other) versions haven't been decided yet. With Sony funding this can't be true.

Shenmue 3 is one of my most wanted games. I'm going to buy the game when it's available but I won't back the Kickstarter.

I backed Bloodstained btw.

actually, it can. i cannot remember the title for the life of me, but there was in instance where a game was made with funding from both ms and sony. can somebody help me out here? i'm blanking on the name.

regardless, shenmue 3 isn't actually being published by sony. it's being backed financially and logistically, but i don't think they've gone out of their way to snap it up as a console exclusive. if anything, it'll be 'to console first on ps4'.

I remember Ninja Gaiden II being published by Microsoft, then ending up on PS3 a year later as Sigma 2.

There are various levels of exclusivity agreements. It's entirely possible they're lying, but the dev can attempt to work out a mere timed exclusive with Sony. Timed exclusives have become popular as they are a good maximization of the benefit of a pure exclusive towards hardware sales and the benefit of a non-exclusive with more total game sales. Sony is probably weighing the amount of goodwill console purchases they can get with a pure exclusive vs the higher revenue they receive from percentage based dividends for each game sale.

What are you talking about? Have you never heard of Joe Danger? Also it hasnt been said that NMS is never going to see release on xbox one day too.

I feel disgusted that my backing is helping someone like you get the game one day. Yuck.
