Super Mario Maker physics debate thread of Mario moving back.... and to the left.

I'm not sure if this is a commonly known thing, but I haven't seen any major media outlet report on this, which is odd because it's a very important detail to ignore.

Takashi Tezuka said in an interview a while back that the physics would be consistent throughout all the different Mario games, which while disappointing, I thought kinda made sense since it would theoretically be a little odd to mesh different kinds of physics into one level.

Well, I'm not sure what happened at Nintendo between those months, but I can confirm that every game in SMM retains the physics of the original game. So SMB plays like SMB, SMW plays like SMW, and so on.

Once I found out about this, my excitement for the game, which was already pretty high, has shot through the roof. I'm pretty sure tons of people aren't aware of this, so I figured they'd like to know.

I want to believe. I want true Mario World physics so badly. I'm taking your word for it, but hopefully other people can pile on and confirm the good news.

Gaming press really dropped the ball by not making this, like, the first thing they reported on when playing the game.

It was very obvious from watching any gameplay footage of the game, but thanks for the confirmation.

Wonder if there will be any SMB 2/USA DLC...

I'm looking forward to making sparkly cave worlds in the SMW style, and exploring them with glorious SMW physics.

I heard this before as well. Sounds like in the editor you can change styles whenever you want, but when you save the level a style is set, physics and all

I would make the fuck out of SMB2:USA levels. Ya'll won't know what to expect when pulling shit outta the ground

I feel that there should be the option to separate physics and looks. Maybe I like the Super Mario World looks, but want the NSMB gameplay.

Color me excited!
I still dunno if I'll get the game day one because there is a lot of game that I still didn't bought, like bayo 2 or smash
But if my bf likes it, I'll make it a priority haha

Game of the forever. We will also get airship theme from super mario world composed by mr kondo himself. holy fuuuuuuuck

Wait so all the new music in this game is actually composed by Koji Kondo? I heard one of the tracks was but that's hard to believe. Awesome if true.

yes, super mario maker is fully composed by koji kondo, the first game since ocarina of time i think. I thought to myself first "well, it's all music we know", but there are level styles for each game style that are new to them, like airship levels in smb and world, and they have new music by koji kondo in them

If you want confirmation that this is a thing. here's an IGN article that states it.

That actualy don't talk about physics .... just "skills" like wall jump and butt stomp.

Actual physics would change the propriets of a mario jump, so it should change the "onon skin" mario on the level edit screen.....

I thought we had seen confirmation of an 8-bit Yoshi previously? Maybe I'm misremembering though.

Maybe you are thinking of amiibo one ?

Has this not been known forever? Did I travel through time again?

I think you would have to keep the physics because it would be jarring if all these graphical styles controlled the exact same way. It should be interesting to see how the gameplay meshes with enemies and obstacles that weren't in that specific game.

Nah, it was an in-game sprite. Thought it was different from that one? Taller, maybe.

Also should have watched that first. :p

Actually I found what I was thinking of, but it was a fake using a fan-made sprite.

When the game was first shown the exact opposite was true: all the styles controlled exactly the same, I think like NSMB

To be fair, when the game was first shown, only the SMB1 and NSMBU styles were available to play. SMB3 and SMW weren't confirmed until later.

Ohhh my god when you finish a level as Yoshi you get the Yoshi's Island end of level fanfare. <3

That 8 bit airship theme is great too.

This fucking game, man.

Shit, Bloodborne might have a contender for my personal GOTY

I'm really hesitant to say the same.

Have any of you played the LBP series? Do you know what usually happens with user-created content? 99% of it is shit, and you need a good online system to make sure the 1% floats to the top.

I'm not entirely confident that Nintendo is capable of preserving a good online system that will make good content float to the top. I've seen what they're planning, but I'm not sure if it'll work well in practice.

I'm not even convinced that the content creation system itself will allow for good Mario levels yet. It depends on how simple and intuitive the tools are, but also how detailed people want to get with the level design. Making a Mario level is a lot of intense design, it's not just placing random blocks.

I dunno, we'll see. I hope that some good levels come out at launch.

Even when the other two were revealed, I thought they still controlled the same and were really just skins

It was a mix of nsmb and smb .... I remember reading that it was closer to smb

Point being that there was no distinction between styles. Them having unique physics is awesome and definitely has not always been true

As I said in the op, Takashi Tezuka himself said there wouldn't be any physics change between games.

Also, I could be mistaken but the Super Mario Advance series didn't play like their original versions (well, at least SMA4 for sure didn't) so there was no guarantee that this wouldn't be similar.

From the sounds of it shared levels are locked into a specific style, so it's probably for the best that you can't mess with people that way

Well, to be fair, LBP wasn't really much of a fun platformed to begin with.

The game that keeps on delivering. So happy to read that! I was worried every set of graphics was going to have SMB physics.

Super Mario World has the best physics in a 2d Mario ever IMO.

Nah, it looks really good imo

Nice pictures showing an overview of the course.

Star Ranking - essentially courses ranked by popularity, give stars to what you've played depending on how much you liked it

Featured - levels picked by Nintendo to be featured

Up & Coming - things that haven't been ranked, or just came out

Can filter by difficulty (easy, normal, expert), by time period or by location

Difficulty determined dynamically by how many people completed the course

Definitely.

I loathe the physics of Super Mario Bros 3 and I'm not really a fan of 1 either.

World feels the best by far.

I'm still not convinced this is true.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpU8Qbs5xrQ This is a SMB1-styled course, but Mario retains the added boost after jumping off of an enemy. This doesn't happen in the original SMB1. It's the only real good example I can find of a discrepancy since the rest is hard to determine without feeling it for yourself, but it feels pretty significant. It'd seem weird if they kept all other physics intact but just changed that one aspect of the jump boost.
