Sony Clarifies Mark Cerny's Role With The Last Guardian

These blind fools still crying about why the game doesn't look like UC4/Horizon on PS4!? Bwahahah. Talk about being clueless as fuck about game development. That AI Trico alone shits on any current gen character and then some. Just the animations alone is head and shoulders above 99.5% of current gen games(PC included).

The Last Guardian was running on upspecced PS3 but looked absolutely incredible for its time. It's obvious that this upspecced PS3 was not comparable to the PS4 in terms of hardware and much closer to the PS3.

I believe you're wrong about this. From what I understand, they recorded TLG running on a PS3, but had to speed up the trailer to make it look as if it wasn't running at a horrendous frame rate, and in addition to that they enabled additional effects for the trailer.

Edit: Also, I just watched the Gamersyde version of the trailer for the first time... How can anyone say this game looks anything like a PS3 game???

Explosions every five steps, cinematic camera angles and add in some swearing too.
I get that this is sarcasm, but from what I saw in the E3 trailer everything except the character models looked kind of muddy and fugly. It's not going to stop me from enjoying the game, but saying it looks great for the PS4 is a little wrong.

They are conditioned to be that way.

This x 1.000.000

From what we have heard, the only reason that the gameplay was not displayed live was because Trico's AI was still too buggy to prove reliable enough for a live stage demo.

We'll have to wait and see, but it sounds like they had some ambitious plans for how Trico interacts with the environment and the player, thus making AI code more difficult to implement. I speculate that Ueda wants absolutely nothing in Trico's behavior to be scripted (outside any cut-scenes, of course).

Honestly, this is the most exciting aspect of the game for me. I already love Trico, but if they can make him/her act in anyway realistic, it could make for a very special game.

But dis guy made dat shit Knack lol!!1!!!

Seriously, looking at the negative comments (the absurd ones, not the not-my-cup-of-tea ones) there are times I believe gamers (as a whole) don't deserve these games.

Hell, there were even absurd comments about Cerny when the news first came out, like he's one of the most badass industry figures of the last two decades and he still got shit from "gamers" around the world.

Cerny's game design is pretty weak.... At least judging by Knack and some others.

But... Thats not really Cerny's forte when it comes to how he expresses himself.... Its hardware and the software that runs on it, hes a code artist.

And very, very, good one. Any project director would be thrilled to have his help in translating their vision to the hardware.

Did you see him get startled by the falling pot as he came down the stairs at the beginning..?

Your preaching to a bunch of people who have no experience in game development,
anyone with even a few years knowledge will look at the animation/ai and be very impressed at the very least.
There is no way on earth that those animations could be possible on ps3.

It does look great, just that its ps3 roots show.

And its ps2 design roots show, which means its head and shoulders more advanced than 90% of the things we have seen over the near past decade of design regression. You actually do the things you see being depicted with in game intrinsic control systems.

People literally dont understand that these arent cutscenes.

I don't understand, are you guys meaning to say I don't appreciate it in it's current state? I can assure most certainly do! Either you are taking my post out of context or I am taking your posts out of context.

Oh not at all, I was just joining in with your enthusiasm! :D

Looks amazing. I only noticed him looking at the pot suspiciously on my third watch through.

I always thought that was the art styles choices going back since Ico, which btw a game that was originally made for PS1.

Oh ok! maybe it's the post after yours that confused me, apologies. I didn't notice the pot the first two times but I went back to look for it. This is gonna be some fucking game.

Me too, IMO it makes the characters look they are hand-drawn in a 3D world. I think this really makes them feel like a fairytale or a dream, and I absolutely love it.

Why don't you try reading the post that you are quoting?
i did and i stand by what i said (providing evidence, mind you):

you seriously think these don't look better than before? i don't know what to tell you man. if you're so hung up on graphics, obviously this isn't for you.
you can fuck off with your passive-aggressiveness. your failure to articulate what you're talking about or support evidence to your claims isn't a shortcoming i need to tolerate.
and then you concede that it does in fact look better than the ps3 version, making your previous question to me all the more absurd.
You are right that it looks noticeably better from the PS3 version.
we're going around in circles, man.

I guess you can add me to the list of people who were thinking it would be improved more than it was. I think my biggest issue right now is the lighting. I was never fond of it in the PS3 version either. It just looks really washed out to me. I know its intentional, but a little more saturation/tuning could go a long way. They still have time though so maybe they will tweak it further.

Could just be the area that's all in shadow, it's a lot starker at the beginning when Trico's standing in the sunlight.
EDIT: Should say I don't have a problem with it at all, I love the way it looks. ;)

From what I understand, the AI is not buggy, it's supposed to be somewhat unreliable by design to make the creature behave like a real animal.

This, I don't think the AI is buggy, I think they make it so the AI does not always immediately do what you instruct it to.... like a real animal.

Turn up Saturation/Contrast on your TV. Problem solved.

PS: Whoa, I just noticed the runes on the boy.

Wow. Your excellent and well-thought out arguments have convinced me that I was wrong.

Why would I waste my time writing out a good argument when I'm arguing with this:
I guess if you consider the PC versions of PS3 games a generational leap, we will have to agree to disagree.

There really is nothing to argue about with such illogical and poorly thought out arguments. But please, continue, it's still funny to see you try to dig yourself out of this hole.

What? How is his "game design" weak? That doesn't even make sense. He created the vertical slice, which is now one of the most popular methods of game design in the industry.

The people developing The Last Guardian are capable of much more than Yooka-Laylee people. The reason why I expected better graphics is because the PS3 version looked VERY good. I expected that to stay true with the PS4 version. I am finding it strange that people here are acting as the graphics cannot be improved because this is "Ueda's vision", as if they know what that means. As far as I am concerned, his original vision was a game with some of the best graphics on its hardware. Also, team size is clearly irrelevant, just look at The Tomorrow Children.

You're making wide assumptions that has been proven otherwise by officials at SONY. You are comparing a PS3 game, which, is reported to run horrendously, indicating the game was not suited for the hardware. You're equating "best" of the PS3 when he clearly went above and beyond that around the ballpark of the PS4, which you are observing right now.

Second, nobody stating that graphics cannot be improved, you need a very high budget to push the visuals high and Team ICO clearly does not have the facilities to operate in such a way. Trying to use the Tomorrow Children as an example does not help you because it doesn't have the environment complexity of other high tiered titles like Uncharted or Killzone. The Last Guardian is already dealing with extreme physics that react on momentum not to mention the sophisticated AI behind it. If you want Ueda to simply create a 5 minute tech demo than I'm pretty sure he could blow Uncharted 4's graphics out to the stratosphere.

If you makes you feel better there is no estimate time for 2016 for the game to be released. As far as I know this extra time could be used to polish up the graphic further although I would very much prefer they get the AI systems correctly because that is a make or break for that game to succeed. The graphics now, as far as I'm concerned, is beyond satisfying especially for the team and budget required.

I think they said the behavior was unpredictable, not buggy. That since it's not scripted they couldnt guarantee he would do what they wanted for the demo. But maybe I interpreted that wrong

I hope this is a joke.

The nuances in Trico are far beyond anything we have seen in gaming today in live gameplay.
I mean for an audience watching. Pretty graphics are more appealing at first glance than the way something moves IMO. You have to really pay attention and re-watch TLG play-through to appreciate it.

And of course, all this talk is somewhat moot as the game still has months of development ahead of it.
