It's that time of the year again, Anime Expo is happening in Los Angeles, CA on July 4th Weekend. They are expecting over 100,000 unique attendees to take over all downtown Los Angeles.

So Gaffers, what are your Anime Expo plans this year?

I will be doing my usual thing of cosplay photography between all the panels and convention fun.

I will be trying not to get fucking sick like I do every time I go to this convention.

That is a good plan, wash your hands, avoid body contact (which will be hard with over 100,000 people running around), and don't touch your face.

I'll be going but I can't head out until 3PM so I'm gonna have to pick up the badge early and then go back. I'm only staying for Thursday.

The only thing that matters is the Mega64 Panel Times Ten But King Kai Said Only Do Times Two panel.

but that Evangelion guy said anime is dying.

I want to check the place out, but I can just imagine the crowd and traffic in LA.

It will be crazy to say the least, traffic was horrendous for downtown LA all the days of Anime Expo.

Is the month of June just nerd palooza for the LA convention area?

I think so, but Anime Expo is the only big nerd convention I know that is going on in 4th of July Weekend.

Only one daying Anime Expo? That's the only day I am not going :(

having been to AX before about 5 times or so, I have to say I look forward to checking out all the cool stuff online more then I care to go now a days (that and I have to work... TnT). it's fun in a way but still a little too much for me, that and I always over spend when I was there -_-;;

How's the body odor levels at these things?

In my many years of attending cons, the first day or two the body odor isn't bad, but it gets horrendous by the last day, more so for the summer convention season (so this is also applicable to SDCC, Anime California, and the newly moved Pacific Media Expo)

If you do winter or spring conventions like Anime Los Angeles, WonderCon, or Comikaze Expo, they aren't as bad because it isn't 90+ outside.

100,000 bodies is a lot to cram into LACC. E3 only reached half that this year.

Anime Expo 2015 Projected: 100,000 unique / 280,000 turnstile attendees,

Anime Expo 2014: 80,000 unique / 220,000 turnstile attendees
Anime Expo 2013: 61,000 unique / 180,000 turnstile attendees

Having attended Anime Expo for a LONG TIME (and former Board Director), I could tell you that 2013 the attendance jump was felt. Last year, it was impossible to move in some areas because of the gigantic crowds, especially in Saturday.

I do remember that they are offloading some programming to Microsoft Theater, LA Live, and JW Marriott, so they are probably hoping that moving stuff out of the LACC would ease crowds and allow them to raise the attendance cap for this year.

I just hope the autograph situation is handled better than last year. I don't want to fight my way through a literal stampede again.

It's the only day that I have semi-free. I guess I could go on Friday too but I don't want to brave the Friday traffic.

If you're going on Thursday you can still go pick up your badge on Day 0 on Wednesday, right?

That reminds me, I should stay the hell away from downtown next weekend. Little Tokyo in particular is going to be appalling.

Well, staying from downtown LA is a good idea period because hotels are sold out within a 10 mile radius from the convention center, and that means a lot of people will be commuting to the convention due to the distance of hotels.

This isn't a San Diego Comic Con situation yet, but with the numbers getting really close, it is getting there.

Going again though originally I wasn't going to due to not getting the time off. But due to a friend needing some help staffing her company's booth, I'll be there from Friday to Sunday helping out.

The rest of my press group will be taking care of coverage and whatnot.

I too am praying that I don't get sick post-AX this year. Last year wasn't too bad due to staying hydrated, keeping Quest bars on hand to stave off hunger and having hand sanitizer/kleenex with me at all times.

Whats up with all the hate.

I been to AX for more than 10 years, Anaheim, Long Beach, LA, traffic has never been that bad, most of the attendees don't go by car anyways.

And smell? while there might be one or two bad cases, but over all it's not that bad at all.

and didn't know Hcoregamer00 is a former board (even int CEO) lol.
Were you part of CAA like a lot of other officers in SJPA was?

Not looking forward to fighting my way into popular panels.
LACC can't get the expansion through soon enough.

Not really interested in anything on the show floor. Usually it's way more expensive than anything you can buy online. I'll walk around for novelty and to take pictures though.

There are a lot of assholes that don't know how to cross the street during this.

Let's get real, nobody obeys the street crossing signals in DTLA year round. AX makes it worse thanks to the very high concentration of foot traffic spilling out of the doors, but driving through any of the arteries that feeds DTLA from end to end is a nightmare anyway.

Not if you're single. The bars are full of freaking chicks during anime expo.

It's Los Angeles in the summertime meng. No reason to dive into a pool of con funk for the thirsty out of towners with the active selection out there right now.

Well, traffic has been particularly bad for Anime Expo during Saturdays, especially the last two years.

Yes, I was on the SPJA Board of Directors. Now I work for Pacific Media Expo and Otakon/Otakon Vegas, but I still go to Anime Expo because you can't forget your first convention.

It's also why I could start Anime Expo threads, because I am not attached to the convention nor its governing nonprofit.

I was more asking about if you were part of CAA, (cal animage alpha)
At least 10+ years ago, i know lots of the staff on SPJA were CAA alums one point or the other.

I do remember seeing you taking picture at AX though (yes i looked at your fb page lol)

Oh no, I work with many of them at Pacific Media Expo. I started attending Anime Expo in 2003.

Yeah, I am still very active in photography at cons, so if you are there from Friday - Sunday, you will see me all over Anime Expo.

Won't be able to attend, but I look forward to the stream of LWA2.

it's called line-con for a reason lol
they did change reg/badge system this year though, technically it will be a lot faster

To be fair, Anime Expo has always been line con.

Even when Anime Expo had 15,000 attendees there were four hour lines. It just got worse because a perfect storm of all the preregistration people picking it up and multiple system crashes.

Not to mention them underestimating the need for getting the tents up sooner for shade relief. Granted, handing out the granola bars and water was a good gesture though I think people in line should've at least brought some water to keep themselves hydrated.

Yes, I am hoping that they have tents outside for lines, because tents would also be a good place to meet up for photoshoots and for resting from the summer heat.

When chatting with Meg and a few others from AX marketing at the NISA event in SF earlier this year, she mentioned that they were going to try to have the tents up prior to Day 0.

Oh and speaking of Day 0, it's also the return of Day 0 press junket so if you are thinking of potential interview stuff, probably best to get them to Meg now.

Oh, I am part of the Anime Industry, so aside from photography, I am doing the Industry Parties.
