Final Fantasy 7 Remake Announced (First on PS4)

The best part about this interview to me is that initially Nomura didn't even know he was the director.

The best part of that interview is that this guy is the one who suggested they remake it

Anyone else worried about the voice acting? I tried watching Advent Children for the first time and it was cringe worthy at best. Maybe because of the stilted dialogue from trying to match up lip synching. Has lip synch tech improved on FF games since? I could totally see some of the best moments from the game getting ruined by some really bad dialogue/lip synching.

Someone please assuage my fears.

There was a sales discussion earlier, this is the most up to date I've been able to collect. Some of the more recent releases like XIV and LR we haven't received an NPD update for about a year (LR is from last June NPD, XIV is my estimate for current sales - could be too high).
Still waiting on creamsugar (or Bunkum) to give us an update...

I threw in estimates for Canada so we could get closer to NA totals.

Also ZhugeEX may have more up to date NPD PSX era...

I bet it'll be FFVII: Reunion.

Just name it 'Final Fantasy VII' please. Fans will know the game is a remake, they don't need a subtitle to tell them. Subtitles could turn off or confuse uninformed potential newcomers/buyers. Keep it simple and approachable.

To me, that just shows how much of a hot mess SE was last gen.

But using the Reunion subtitle actually HAS context in the story. So it would fit, so it would have a dual meaning for those returning from the original game, and as well as it's plot significance.

So in this context it wouldn't be confusing for someone inexperienced with the series.

It's funny you mention GameFAQs considering who wrote the official guide for FF7 (Dan Birlew) who was a prominent FAQ writer for GameFAQs under the alias President Evil, in fact most of his written guides at the time were removed being hired by Brady at the time.

Most of the guides he wrote were solid - http://www.amazon.com/Dan-Birlew/e/B001IGX1EW/ref=sr_tc_ep?qid=1297799275

However Square's stupid PlayOnline thing really screwed up the FF9 guide for everyone involved, Brady and Piggyback included.

That's awesome! I read a few of President Evil's FAQs, didn't know it was Dan Birlew. That's fantastic!

I'm worried about everything now.

They should never allow themselves to create another sequel to a main numbered FF game.

Please go back to stand alone complete story games.

Well, FFX-2 was pretty successful compared to steep decline from FFXIII to FFXIII-2 and LR because the main game was well-received.
If FFXV is popular and the story is definitely self-contained I would really have no problem with a sequel. Say what you want, but FFX-2 and LR both had the series' best battle-systems of their generation as the team could build on the experience and feedback of the years before. I would love to see how they could tweak FFXV's system. And also they could mix up the party's gender to please the current naysayers regarding the all-male cast

Same here, I wonder how detailed they are going to be. Those guides were really useful when I didn't have access to internet in the mid 90's by 2000, GameFAQs got me through most games.

These days, strategy guides are more or less glorified manuals. Everything you need to beat a game is online in a YouTube video.

I still like getting them, especially for RPGs. I just find it easier to flip through a book than search through an online FAQ if I need it.

I still buy a guide with every Final Fantasy I play. It's somewhat of a tradition that started with 8. Sure you don't need them, especially int he age of online, but it's a different experience, a better one.

Pretty much the same case for me really, though there have been some instances of them being pretty bad.

I do find it curious that along with this first box set of VII, VIII, and IX, they are doing a second one that contains guides for X, X-2, and most curiously of all, XII.

Weird about the X and X-2 since they did a reprint already of the previous guides for the remaster, but the fact they're apparently going to be doing one for XII makes me wonder since out out of all the ones they are doing this for, XII is the only one not readily available either as a remaster or digitally through PSN or Steam.

If they wanted to make a sequels to the main numbered FF games..... then with DIFFERENT cast of characters and a different story.

No more to be continue sh*t or getting the main characters dragged for unnecessary quest that hurt the image of the original one.

Exactly. Their downfall began with FF XIII. I don't even know why they even made two sequels to it, as it's not very memorable at all. FF XIV was even worse before the reboot of it.

They have a lot to prove to fans that FF can be saved.

While I enjoyed FFX-2's battle system, LR's got repetitive super fast. I found XIII-2's to be the best because you could switch between Noel and Serah, monster capturing added a different layer of strategy, you could refresh your ATB if you change your Paradigm after a certain amount of time. My only knock against it is the lack of a Haste spell, unless I never found it. The only time I remember my characters under the effects of Haste was from Feral Links and preemptive strikes.

I still like getting them, especially for RPGs. I just find it easier to flip through a book than search through an online FAQ if I need it.

Oh absolutely, I've started to get them for games I really enjoy.

And so far an anime version of a male road trip doesn't seem like a hot idea. IMO

I booted FFVII up again for a bit today. Man, I hope they don't mess up the open world. It's going to be hard for them to really make an actual world map explorable. I don't want them to do something like Fallout or Witcher where you walk everywhere in a 1:1 scale and just pretend that the whole world is the size of a city. Maybe they can have the terrain near key areas 1:1, but the far distances between key places will do the same exploring perspective of the original.

SE already unveiled FFXVI, If FFXV sales aren't hot, would SE keep trying to keep FF brand alive after FFVII-R?

The shared universe movies from Marvel worked well for them and SE has been implementing ideas similar to that also (Dissidia, FF:record keeper, World of FF, FF:rhythm curtain call)

I'm interested to see what SE does with FF going forward especially since FFXV 1.0 demo had mixed receptions

And if they want the original cast to return, they can do crossovers that's similar to the Super Sentai Vs. movies for DLC.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
So what was even the point of Vincent in the story because I don't remember.
Former member of The Turks. Involved with Lucretia (Sephiroth's mother) and had a falling out with Hojo for stealing his love interest and experimenting on their (Hojo and Lucretia's) child. Hojo shot Vincent and experimented on him too. Then Hojo sealed him in a coffin. Vincent's story cemented Hojo as a real bastard.

So what was even the point of Vincent in the story because I don't remember.

He's an optional character for the same reason Yuffie is, they're not integral to the story in any way. At least digging into his backstory does provide some additional lore. Yuffie is just kind of off doing her own thing. Naturally that means they need to expand Yuffie's role in the Remake.

So what was even the point of Vincent in the story because I don't remember.

Vincent is a former Turk that wants to exact retribution to Hojo and Shinra for making Lucretia(his wifey)carry Sephiroth (or Jenova?) in childbirth and resulting in her death.

He also had strange experiments performed on him by Hojo, which explains his unique Limit Break. Hojo shot him and used his half dead body to experiment

so like the twilight

I don't think his romance with Lucretia is half as forced as Cloud and Aerith or Bella and Robert Pattison from twilight.

That is a fine title for the fans who can appreciate the meaning. But I still think its a bad idea from a business perspective. Subtitles generally suck for reasons. Keep it simple.

Business perspective?

I don't know of any game that had poor sales as a result of a name. Poor gameplay mechanics, visual or graphical issues. but never a name.

Besides I doubt a FF7 Remake is going to have poor sales reception considering it's fervent fanbase.

Those unfamiliar with the game (which considering it's reputation there are very few people unfamiliar with it) will decide to buy the game if the game lives up based on things like critical reception, if it's a good game, there is positive word of mouth, etc, not on a name or subtitle.

Simply just say you don't like it having a subtitle instead of saying reasons due to business perspective, which doesn't make any sense.

Wasn't bravely default made because people were clambering for classic-style RPG battle systems? that should say something at least..

i dunno.. who am i kidding? i'll buy this game regardless lol

Does Dirge have a good battle system ? IIRC it had shooting ?

I never got to play it but I always thought it looked cool as hell at the time.

idk, it had shooting so that's automatically bad for me. Someone with more shooter knowledge should answer that for you.

The game looked pretty, and had a cool last stage. These are all the positives I can remember.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I think Nomura has the right attitude about him. We don't know what they are planning just yet, but we do know that they have the mindset to not be concerned about people pulling them in every which direction.

What their vision is should stay contained to themselves i think, and if it crashes and burns, that's life.

What we can probably be pretty confident on is that CC2 is making it, and its using UE4. That it will feature PBR, and it'll probably be somewhat open world, they are looking into GPGPU compute specifically for PS4 implementation and lifelike and realistic expression

I find many of those PAL estimates lower than I think they should be but pal data is very hard to get so I couldn't really know :/

Also rereleases are not counted right? not even X/X-2 hd that had retail?

Emerald WEAPON's just been sunk to the bottom of the sea after 13 minutes of KotR miming! Alls left for my current playthrough is beating Ruby unless I'm missing something? KotR'll be mastered after beating it so I could prolly go for a third master summon if I really wanted!

I can't say much about the gameplay quality since it was my first (and last) shooter but it has a buncha nice environments, baddies, and stuff. Lotsa extras to! I did like that it wasn't super bogged down in FFVII story/locations/people an instead did alot of its own things... for better or worse.

That reminds me, I remember hearing that X HD was outselling LR. I wonder if that kept up.

Speaking of Emerald weapon, how would action combat even works underwater? Unless they flat out remove this superboss, that would suck hard. Emerald weapon was the most challenging boss in FFVII.

That 6.6m was shipped, the chart does not cover digital.
I remember 3.1m or so announced by SE for XIII-2...there must be a lot of unsold games out there, it's difficult to come up with that extra million...was it a hit in PAL regions or something?
