Digitimes: Supply chain players gear up for new Nintendo console

July would seem awfully early if mass production starts in say May. August or September would be more likely based on past windows on mass production starting.

That said with Nintendo can never tell.

2 Months is enough time for production based on history especially if its using tech that is not in risk of low yields. Nintendo for instance got its first delivery of CPUs for the Wii September 1st 2006 and was on shelves November 19th

That is not strange. If I remember correctly full scale PS4 manufacture started in ~ early September for mid-November launch.

Huh, I would have thought you'd need a bit longer.

yeah i really don't know about that. games would need to be finished for the machine in early may at the absolute latest.

I would guess that some 3DS software like MH Stories and Snack World will be cross gen.

I'm sad that there are zero rumors of AMD being key partner in production of next Nintendo console. Nintendo needs to get their core hardware into modern times. It's way past time to move away from Gamecube CPU architecture.

Well AMD said they have a console contract for 2016 and also said they want to get the contract for a handheld so it's actually likely they are the partner. Also AMD has worked with Nintendo on their consoles for nearly 20 years now.

Macaronix makes cartridges for 3DS so cartridges confirmed?

A July release would be way early though.
Macronix and the 20 million units do indeed seem to lean towards a handheld system. 20mil in its first year is probably optimistic for a handheld system too. There's probably more to this than we expect.

For perspective. The Wii did roughly 20 million its first year. So that tells you the kind of shoes NX would need to step into

You do know that AMD has already supplied Nintendo in the past, right? Like...just about for every single one of their consoles? Them being a partner would be ZERO indication of anything

If this rumor is true, They need to show this first at Early 2016, not E3 2016. July release is earlier than I expected.

I need to go to bed, read that as Supply Chan.

On that note, how long has the 3DS been out? Feels like its at least got a couple more years in it. I cant see a new Nintendo system of any kind at least till 2017.

Next March will mark 5 years in the States I believe. A little earlier for Japan.

Those numbers and timeframe are a bit hard to believe.
It might be true simply because we know Nintendo can be crazy sometime.

20 million is too much, but if the correct figure is anywhere near that I'm expecting both handheld and home console SKUs to arrive at roughly the same time. I highly doubt they're building 20 mill of a single version of the hardware.

Hell, it might be a sign that they're being more aggressive with their SKUs than we expected. Maybe this includes stuff like a Tablet or Stick version of the hardware?

Worked for the Sega Saturn!

Imagine if they pull an Apple: announce it at E3 and say: "The console is available...today"

It was another times for apple and saturn.

But, I can see it happenning in the new 3DS way:
The hardcore fans being called by email and determined though the new DeNA account to order online and to receive the first batch of console a month or couple month later.

I have no hurry but I wish this is a portable device that could substitute my vita in the future: capable hw wise and dual analogue sticks. That is all i care about.

If this is a handheld, I could see it launching in September of 2016, so yeah, a mid-2016 production would be feasible.

Maybe the rumour is about the QoL product and not the console, but people would just assume "console/handheld" as the order is placed by nintendo?

Announced in 2016 and released in July? In the middle of the year? Predictions higher than PS4? The article sounds credible, but it's hard to believe.

Numbers that are mentioned are VERY aggressive, which either points to very cheap priced home console or more likely a new handheld.
Reggie about NX:
In the home console space, we’re focused on Wii U. NX is in the future.

Its impossible. May be they are targeting $149 device but still its not possible unless they have big line up for entire year which also sounds unrealistic.

very likely both.

20 million units and the july launch is what makes this sound insane. is the site reputable?
Yeah, DigiTimes is usually reputable. It's a Taiwanese paper and very well connected to local and Chinese companies in the IT, electronics and manufacturing business.

Well a quick breakdown

Coxon Precise Industrial and Nishoku Technology specialize in plastic molding and injection so would likely be the case providers for the device

Lingsen Precision Industries specializes in semiconductor and other component testing.

Jentech specializes in Metal stamping with example of main products produced being thermal heat spreaders.

PixArt Imaging seems to dabble in bunch of stuff ranging from Image sensors to motion tracking sensors and of course capacative touch or optical sensors
Pixart previously worked with Nintendo on the Wii Controller

Delta Electronics designs power supplies and fans for electronics

I think Nintendo could get a Wii U-level handheld device in 2016 out easily. It would be a good platform that is a clear step up from the 3DS and Vita, but I question what appealing software they could have in its first year aside Pokemon, and looking at Nintendo's struggles to adapt to HD development, I'm still not certain they have learned their lesson.

Still, it kind of sucks that the WiiU sort of feels like a practice run for HD development more than anything else.

They usually hear about suppliers gearing up for products but they've been quite inaccurate in the past about product volume and schedules. I remember when they were variously reported that PS4 shipments would be 16 or 20m in 2013...

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Nintendo's home consoles also use Macronix parts.

Mmmh.

Component suppliers such as Foxconn Technology, Macronix, PixArt Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Electronics, Lingsen Precision Industries and Jentech, are also expected to land orders from Nintendo for the new console, the sources added.

So...what do all of them do, then? Just to get a clearer picture.

EDIT: antonz answered above, thanks.

Also some reporting has been just plain wrong.

Handheld fall/winter, home console no way.

Might be possible though? GBA was March/June 2001 and GC was September/November 2001. Just speculating of course.

If you look at it reasonable though, then you are right.

I wonder what software they'll have ready for a new handheld in the summer.

- Another 2D Mario
- Some cross gen 3DS ports
- Maybe a new Pokemon
- DQXI is probably launching in the summer to coincide with the 30th anniversary, that'd a be big get for Nintendo's new handheld, although there's always the possibility it ends up on PS3/PS4

I feel like I'm only just beginning to work through the 3ds library, and now another nintendo handheld might be releasing. Geez

I can't see them launching in July, it'll most likely be September.

It must be a handheld. No way are they launching a console this soon.

Nintendo can't even launch any games in July let alone a console. That's not happening.

20 million first year? Let's start with outselling the Wii U instead.

20 million is way too much for a single device. Personally I think they're releasing both a console and a handheld running the same infrastructure/OS (ala Android/iOS). Iwata keeps mentioning wanting to easily port over games between devices, developing a platform similar to Android/iOS so they can make more form factors, and some of the higher ups at Nintendo mentioned NX being a console (where 20 million is way too much to manufacture, especially after the Wii U bombing). Needs to be multiple form factors for 20 million to make sense imo.

Of course this is assuming this rumor is even true, lol.

I can see them going for a fall release with a couple of heavy hitters arriving for Holiday.

If this is true, next year's Nintendo E3 should be very interesting
