Added to the item schema:

"Competitive Matchmaking Beta Pass"

Present this pass in the Competitive Mode Beta to gain access to ranked ladder games.

Might be just for the beta. No idea. Eventually they can just tie MM to levels. Like in GO with its XP system and level 3 requirement. Though that would require a system like that to be implemented first.

No way it's just for beta. If it wasn't a f2p game sure. But it is. Even with levels the game will be filled with cheaters best way to slow it down is to add a price to get into comp.

TF2 has a beta branch but it's probably long forgotten now. I remember one experiment where they doubled everyone's HP. Spies were suddenly really good.

Eh, that didn't help much with GO. People were still buying it for smurfs and such. They would have to price it very high to deter those people, but then they would piss off the legitimate players.

well its not gonna stop it completely but will stop some. People are going to cheat regardless.

I wonder if there's even a competitively viable pl map. Barnblitz is probably the closest one, then maaaaybe Badwater.

The majority of competitive Highlander matches are already on Payload maps (last season there were three Payload maps, two 5CP maps, two KotH maps, and one Attack/Defense map). I don't think there's an issue there.

Of the stock maps in Highlander Badwater (sometimes the pro version, sometimes the regular version), Upwards and Barnblitz (the pro version) are typically played in comp, while Swiftwater is another popular comp map. Payload isn't played in 6s.

Also as an update one of the TF2 comp players who has been working with Valve on the comp matchmaking recently said during a stream that it will likely come out early next year.

Is banny helping out valve in making this or is he just testing it?

Supposedly they're taking his advice on competitive balancing (to my dismay). I don't really follow him, but according to what I've heard on the TF2 subreddit a lot of the
awful
changes to Pyro occurred because of his complaints.

Really? Matchmaking is great and essential for ranked play.
Usually the other way around, especially when PC ports don't get dedicated servers. Seen complaints about matchmaking never seem to really work in most (console?) games.

I don't think I've ever seen PC gamers wanting matchmaking before.
TF2 has been sort of a cast aside horse doing it's own thing forever so the attention is nice when you want to play a competitive match (which needs classes to fill roles)

It's not that PC gamers don't want matchmaking, it's that they don't want matchmaking to be the exclusive mode of joining a game. When you're just trying to have light fun, being able to load up a server list and go to one of your regulars is essential. This lets you form a community with new friends in game. That's a property that typically set PC FPS apart from console ones. However, if you want to play a competitive match with small teams, then matchmaking is important so that you can get like minded individuals to all join the match at the same time.

PC gamers have been doing forms of online matchmaking before online gaming was on consoles using IRC-based scrim/pug bots to organize competitive matches.

I just want a guaranteed group of team-oriented players- which aside from Payload matches is hard as HELL to find in TF2. Fucking around is fun for a few hours but after that.... I just want people to actually try to grab the flag instead of grief hard.

Hell, the TF2 community made their own competitive matchmaking website (TF2Lobby) years ago. Worked pretty well.

EDIT: Apparently TF2Center does much the same thing now.

This. Matchmaking is the only way for competitive matches. Server browsers are amazing for pubbing. I've been in several communities and it was always a great time because you get to know a lot of people. It helps that the TF2 community is generally very friendly too.

Here's my very messy notes from the stream:

reiterated: role of MM is to bridge gap b/w pubs and competitive, Valve trying to standardize TF2 in many respects

MM is nowhere close to being released, still testing servers/system
- delay in 6v6 MM happened because people's custom files were causing MM to crash people's games

Beta Plans
- 6v6 to start, 9v9 later on b/c getting that many people/classes is difficult
- b4nny gave away 20 passes, mostly to top Invite players
- plans to rapidly expand beta after holidays
- streamable!
- party feature available (similar to MvM), still buggy though

Customization Options
- DX9 required for MM
- Valve will allow custom HUDs and files as long as they offer no extra advantages (devs directly asked b4nny about this)
- restrictions on some CFG commands
-- Valve reviewing performance configs from actual comp players
-- a lot of unnecessary commands in performance configs, many of them actually don't help

Changes to commands, some restricted
- ragdolls enabled locked
- motion blur being on is a bug - Valve
- no crits/spread ofc
- freezetime locked at beginning
- interp limit right now - b4nny gave feedback that it should be adjustable, Valve will add in built-in option for it (per class hopefully!)

Viewmodels, FOV settings
- 75 (viewmodel FOV) and 90 (in-game FOV) limits right now, in flux
- possibility: transparent viewmodels instead of outright turning off viewmodels

Weapons, Classes
- weapon bans, class limits - none right now (not a priority ATM, focus is on system itself working)
- balance changes like in Tough Break - more incoming, data will be gathered from MM

Map Rotation
- custom maps will not be in queue, but stock versions of maps may be changed

Ranks
- 1 rank per player, rather than per class
- winning gains rank, losing lowers it
- on scoreboard at end - frags, damage, support, rank, change in MMR - possibly more detailed stats in the future
- if you crash, you can reconnect
- there is a low-priority queue if you repeatedly abandon

Server Locations
- confirmed: Virginia, Los Angeles, Seattle
- chooses based on where majority of players are located?

Unanswered Questions
- VAC bans? hackers in MM?
- sprays?
- voice codec update?
- crosshairs?
- essential competitive items (eg Gunboats, Crusader's Crossbow, Boston Basher, etc.) more accessible?
- b4nny mentioned that game breaks down w/o a Medic during his visit to Valve, possible motivation behind some Tough Break class changes?

Hope they give us an option to turn off viewmodels anyway or later down the road at least. Ive played this game for xxxx amount of hours, i really dont need to see the weapons anymore. It's just clutter. Wish more FPS's would give the option to disable them even.
