Nintendo PlayStation...so, apparently someone has one.

The original prototypepic is old, these photos are awesome. Where was this system till now? Additional info?! Maybe at ken or shus home?

No kidding. Who knows if the capacitors are dead, or the motherboard fried, or any number of things. Just hooking it up to a power line could irreparably damage it if the internals have a short. Hand the thing over to an expert, pronto!

Then put it into a museum.

Pffft...of course he shouldn't do that

...hate me...
Real or fake, I'd love to have a peak into the present of the alternate reality where this project and jointventure actually moved forward.

The known prototypes didn't have any either.

Does anyone have a clearer pic? What does it say on the accessory that's in the cartridge port?

"_______ DISK(??) SYSTEM CARTRIDGE"

Again, it leads me to fear that he might be missing an important component that makes the CD part of the console work. I'm hoping it turns on and he can prove otherwise.

Clearly a fake or a VERY internal prototype... not any Nintendo logo? Right...

If memory serves, the V-Saturn and Hi-Saturn didn't have Sega logos on them either, and those were production, retail units. If Nintendo was contemplating licensing the SFC technology to Sony for that part of it, it's not implausible that the terms of that arrangement were similar and it was to be produced without a Nintendo logo.

Really hope this can be properly taken care of and archived going forward/somebody get on teleportation and get this thing safely in front of byuu for maximum posterity.

Looks more like "ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM" than "*two words* SYSTEM"

The cart would likely be a stand-in for that more final-looking piece, should it be real.

The owner of the system is talking about it here.

It came from a man named Olaf that used to work for Nintendo. The owner is currently seeking a power supply to boot it up.

These Sony-branded systems were in Sony's hands, not Nintendo's. Sony wasn't making them for Nintendo, they were making them for Sony (Nintendo could have the SNES add-on units).

Olaf Olafsson from Sony was a major figure in the development of this unit. He's the guy who described the relationship breakdown/Nintendo betrayalton as a "stab in the back". He definitely would've had access to prototypes.

Thanks for the link, i still dont know if thats an pretty good fake or is this thing is real...

What if it runs both Snes cartridges and PS1 games for real?
If it's a complete prototype and not just built for looks, then it should be able to run SNES games and SNES CD games (the Sony-branded ones which pissed Nintendo off). When you plug the "CD cart" into the cart slot, the system should know to check the CD drive.

The only SNES CD games he could test in the unit would be leaked ones (or copies of leaks), and the only way to play those leaks would be in this unit (or another leaked unit), until someone manages to make an emulator.

This won't ever run PS1 games. The Sony-branded SNES CD and the PS1 are entirely different systems. If it runs a PS1 game, that's a massive indicator that it's a fake.

I never read that this was supposed to succeed the SNES. I've always thought it was intended as a pure add on device to the SFC.

My gut says this is fake as hell. Particularly due to the fan holes on the sides of the device. Nintendo wouldn't let Sony design something that needed that type of ventilation back then. Its too modern-looking and too large to really need that.

That was what had Nintendo worried, the reason they canceled the deal and pissed Sony off, forming a rivalry. Sony was going to manufacture and sell the CD systems all by themselves, and get all the licensing fees for the CD games, with Nintendo not being involved in them at all.

But yes, of course it's a prototype, because they never went into full manufacturing. Supposedly 200 units were made, that had to have been a manufacturing test run or for developers or PR or something.

That's the Phillips CD addon. When Nintendo canceled the Sony deal because that was giving Sony too many rights to basically sell their own game console, they switched to Phillips and instead had theirs be a separate addon so that it wouldn't be such a bad deal.

Apparently 200 of these were produced and the story goes that SONY was pushing this out on there own in 1992/93 after Nintendo f*cked them over with Phillips. I guess due to agreements they still had the right to produce this 'playstation' CD version of the SNES that was originally going to be released alongside the add on for Nintendos console. In the end Sony scrapped this and then moved forward with the 32 bit console for release in 1994.

First word seems to be SUPER to me. I actually think the second may be NES, although by itself it looks more like DISK.

But SUPER NES SYSTEM CARTRIDGE is my hunch.

If that's a fake it's a hell of a good job. Sculpt is almost an exact match, plastic yellowing is spot on, and the cartridge is a Super Famicom part. Labelling on prototypes is extremely spotty and often unmarked unless you look at the motherboard. Ventilation makes sense given the CD drive era. Anyway, it's a Sony developed prototype, not something greenlit for stores.

Sony wanted to sell an all-in-one combined unit. Nintendo could keep on making SNES units and CD add-ons. Sony would control the CD games, while Nintendo would control the cart games (this was the part that pissed Nintendo off, once Nintendo realized, because they had assumed they would control everything).

Nintendo had no control over Sony's unit. Nintendo's name is not on the box. The only control Nintendo managed to get was threatening to go to war.

There were sooo many "SNES CD" units. Not counting minor revisions, there was the Sony all-in-one, the Sony add-on, the Nintendo-Phillips add-on, the Phillips CD-i (I think there was talk of the Nintendo-Phillips add-on being CD-i compatible, which would make the CD-i count as an SNES CD), and finally the vaporware Nintendo-controlled merger of the Sony and Phillips devices.

After Nintendo snubbed Sony and went with Phillips, Sony went about making their own system. But they were in talks with Nintendo for licensing what would be this device.

I've never heard about Sega being in the mix, but according the book Console Wars, Sega of America tried convincing Sega of Japan to partner with Sony. After those talks broke down Sony went on to make what we know as the original PlayStation.

Another interesting thing from the book. After the Sony deal fell through, SoA met with Silicon Graphics (SGI) and tried to get SoJ to use their chip as SoA felt the Saturn wouldn't be a failure. SoJ rejected deal saying only that the chip was "too big". SoA's CEO Tom Kalinske was ticked off at the news and gave SGI's CEO Howard Lincoln's contact information. Which then let to the creation of the Nintendo 64.

So in the end Sega turned down the opportunity to have something like the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. Thing how things could have changed if either of those happened.

And I'm damn excited for it!!!

Holy shit, if this is legit it could be worth a lot of money, it's a pivotal part of the gaming industry.

It belongs in a museum not some attic.

Polygon has a fascinating interview up.
http://www.polygon.com/2015/7/3/8889237/Nintendo-Play-Station

Also noticed in the comments user 'oldtaku' translated the cart and it says its a demo from Oct' 92. (holy crap if that works)

Seems strange that Olaf would take it with him when he went from Sony to this new company, hold on to it until 2009, and then it ends up in a box of junk destined for the Dumpster. You'd think that by 2009 this thing would be regarded as more than mere junk.

May I have a cookie?
God Dammit we've all been wasting our lives in the wrong universe where this thing never made it to market!

We could've had it all for the last 20 years!!

Wasn't PlayStation two separate words (As in 'Play Station') when Sony was in bed with Nintendo?

yea I believe so

Also, wouldn't it have Nintendo's logo somewhere on the case?

God Dammit we've all been wasting our lives in the wrong universe where this thing never made it to market!

Gaming would be fucked if this thing came out

Sega and Nintendo would have eventually caused another video game crash with all their dumbass decision making and PC would probably be the only platform to play the kinds of games we take for granted now. Although it's also possible that if the Nintendo partnership was successful that Sony would eventually go it alone in the console space anyway.

Hard to say... probably wasn't a big deal to him - maybe he had a few other prototypes or forgot about it - who knows.
