This is quite shocking.

He will be remembered for a lot of accomplishments. My favorite is hearing how he singlehandedly reworked the programming of Mother 2, saving the project. Hell of a feat and helped create my favorite game.

Fuck fuck fuck no...

I just can't believe. I can't.

He looked very thin in the last Direct, but I thought things would get better. He was so charismatic and had a great passion for games. It's good to have a president like that.

Rest in peace, Iwata-san. You will be missed.

On second thought, the press release does not mention there is a change in presidency, just that Miymaoto and Takeda remain in their positions. A new thread is not needed

Batteries the CRISIS!
I can't even....

any information on what his ailment was? What could have possibly caused him to pass away so suddenly?

The press release in the OP says that he died from a bile duct growth.

He had surgery to remove it last year, which is why he missed E3 2014, but it apparently grew back.

I just got home after a beautiful day at the park with my two kids, and this terrible news is waiting for me. Rest in peace Satoru Iwata.

Biliary tree malignancies lead to severe jaundice/yellowing of the eyes and skin. Am I reading too much into the banana joke? Is that why he was holding the bananas? That seems like an incredibly morbid thing for a Direct if so, in retrospect.

This seems interesting. Is there an article for this somewhere?

This knocked the wind out of me. I'm hurting, man.

Nintendo is probably the only company on Earth that puts their bigwigs out there the way they do. Reggie, Iwata and Miyamoto aren't mysterious men behind the curtain or anything, they're characters! Tons of hilarious moments from Nintendo Directs and other events the last three or four years have made them seem like such appealing, down-to-earth guys.

Iwata had so many cool quirks and was generally so much fun to watch and listen to. Like, what other corporate president had so many memorable catchphrases? "Please understand", "directly to you", and of course the friendly wave and "Hello, everyone!" at the beginning of every show. He's been the one to present so much good news to us for such a long time, when I heard "please, take a look" he'd get all my attention. And of course that's not even mentioning the work he put into games like EarthBound, Melee, and Pokemon Gold/Silver.

One of the all-time greats. It's gonna hurt to even think about Nintendo for a little while.

It's pretty damn cool that even though I've never met the man, I feel like I've connected with him through the games I've played.

Shows how this little medium of ours transcends the physical. The love and care he put into his games reached me, just another average joe on the other side of the planet.

For that, Iwata, I thank you. Thanks for being a benevolent force in my favorite hobby, and thank you for being a friend to your employees and colleagues.
Great post. You put into words exactly what I feel.

I just saw this on Yahoo news and I immediately rushed over here looking at the very top of the page. GAF never disappoints.
My deepest condolence to his family.
Regardless of his debatable business perspective, he always striked me as a genius and a truly nice guy and gentleman.
May he rest in peace.

Look at the upper-right part of the press release. It names Takeda as the "representative director" (i.e. president)

What a shitty feeling to know that one of the last things he has done as CEO is to apologize for Nintendo's E3. The man must have worked over the last months knowing that he was going to die. He didn't deserve to pass away on that note. :-(

Oh God, I didn't even realize. ;_;

@Tak_Fujii
Life time is limited no matter who you are. We don't last forever but what we've done won't go away and will stays someone's heart.

Can I please have a ribbon for my avatar?

Sadly, Tak Fujii is fighting against cancer.

Fuck you cancer!!

Just...wow...

I saw a link while browsing a news site that said "Nintendo President dies" and I thought it was an old article. After opening it I saw I was wrong and am still in shock. I knew he was having health problems, but I didn't know to what extent and I thought they were getting taken care of.

I know people liked to criticize him, but this is a truly sad day for gamers.

Of course, my thoughts and prayers to his loved ones.
