I can't stop crying, you guys. I can't stop. I have never been so thoroughly affected by the death of someone I've never met.

I hope his family sees the Internet's outpouring of love and memories and realizes how much he positively affected so many people and touched so many lives.

Oh man...

Out of all of the (incredible) tribute images so far, this has hit me the hardest. Nintendo games exist in brightest parts of human imagination - they push the buttons at the epicenter of fun, slide through our brains bringing a trail of creative whimsy in their wake. Seeing a picture of Kirby crying, or Mario with his head bowed still takes me to those vibrant worlds - a sadder continent to be sure, but in those vibrant worlds nonetheless.

This image, though... this is brick and stone. Metal and mortar. This is real. An actual human of finite longevity, of failing flesh and blood, will soon be laid to rest. Another incarnation of the man can't be programmed, another Iwata asks can never be held, and another direct with him will never be filmed.

Iwata's final credits are here, the closing coda on one of the most genuine and beloved characters the game of life ever programmed. Sure, we can replay Iwata's greatest moments, but we'll never get another new level.

So thank you, Satoru Iwata. Thank you for your integrity, thank you for your prowess, and most of all - thank you for leading us through the few bright spots Earth still has to offer. </3

That sums it up for me. Amazing post.

Let's not crucify, Patcher.

Seems like an honest miscalculation. He was known for his harsh assessment of Iwata's decisions.

As Ninja Scooter said, it seems like he was trying to preempt criticism, but doing so made it worse.

I'd rather honor and remember Iwata.

I knew people were going to be upset with Patcher, but its probably the only way he could have done it without ignoring it entirely. As you said, he was known for his very harsh and blunt view on Iwata. He believed Iwata was a bad CEO, full stop. To ignore that in his tweet would come off as kind of... phoney? Maybe he could have worded it better. I dunno. I wouldn't crucify the guy for it, don't think he meant to come off as a dick.

Cancer sucks :(

Health truly is everything so take care of your health, people, while you still have it.

RIP Iwata. Gone too young.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
If it's no issue to others, could I get the Iwata ribbon treatment, too?

Occasionally tearing up thinking about this, and I know some may find that odd as I never personally knew the man. Yet, it was his humanity, his passion, his compassion for fans and especially those he worked with that I feel sorrow we lost. Most of the world today is focused on sheer profit over prosperity, yet Iwata seemed like one of the few who knew there's more to what we do than the money made from it. That when one makes a product, it's not merely about selling it in gangbusters: the people making it have to enjoy making it, or it's not worth it to be made. And the players have to enjoy playing it, or else it's not worth playing. No amount of marketing or hype can obliterate those very basic human facets. I feel his career and presence at Nintendo showcased this more than anybody in this industry.

Finally got online after a day of craziness to see this. So sad. He's a legend to the industry and will not be forgotten. I had no idea he was in poor health. RIP Iwata.

During many times watching Nintendo Directs over the past few years, I would say to my girlfriend "Iwata is such a nice man".

I don't think it was just a persona. I don't think he had that in him. I believe he was as he appeared to be, a kind, gentle guy, who ran his business with heart.

Without a doubt some incredibly sad news for the industry and for gamers everywhere. We all talked about how Nintendo was entering a transition phase with NX on the horizon but none of us had a clue of just how much of a transition phase Nintendo was really in.
Whoever takes Iwata's place long term has some amazingly large shoes to step into.

RIP Iwata. Your love of gaming and dedication to it will live on

i never really thought about the kind of president iwata was. i had been able to read up on yamauchi and having experienced the nintendo he created, especially in the video game world, yamauchi seemed more like a mad genius. in contrast, and now that there is time to look back, iwata seemed more like an artisan toymaker, especially given the stories of his programming prowess. i think one of the most startlingly fantastic things he did at nintendo were the iwata asks, interviews that shed light on the design process of current and classic games. that sort of thing really set him apart as far as i'm concerned.

Wow, can't believe it... RIP Mr. Iwata. Condolences to his family.

Didn't even know the extent of his influence, it's just crazy. Cancer really sucks.

I started to tear up when I realized it wasn't a joke.

Iwata was the kind of CEO I wanted to know more about. He was a genuinely likeable, funny guy who had technical knowledge to boot.

I don't know if Nintendo Directs will continue, but I do know that they'll never be the same.

RIP, Mr. Iwata.

Good concept but needs to be cleaner, especially the text, and also needs a dark version.

I'd work on something but I don't have files for the original logo.

Jk I found all the original files. I'm going to try and expand on this a bit.

I never watched the recent E3 direct. I can't tell if it would be a fitting sendoff, or a waterworks factory...

My heartfelt condolences to any and all those whose lives Mr, Iwata touched. That includes every one of us, too. He will be missed, as will his unique perspective. We are all the lesser for his passing.

That Shigesato Ito quote Firemind posted actually made me tear up, for real.

This may have been legitimately one of the more shocking things I've read, up there with finding out Robin Williams had died. I go out for the afternoon, come back and bam, this stuff is all over my feed.

RIP Iwata.
