The Pokemon Stadium thing is a big deal, because people don't remember how completely fucking broken Red/Blue was and how Iwata fixed those glitches, on his own, with no reference documents, over a weekend.

I gotta say this is my favorite piece of art in this thread. I hope you don't mind that I'm gonna use it as a phone wallpaper. It's beautiful as it is.

Until this thread, I didn't know he was the reason why Pokemon Gold ended up being my favorite Pokemon game ever -- I remember my head exploding when I found out there were AN ENTIRE SET OF BADGES TO GET after the initial 8, and even better was they were the OG towns...

I don't think any Pokemon game has done that since, maybe? Regardless, that cements Gold/Silver in my heart as the best Pokemon game.

I still remember the cold winter air at the mall when my mom brought me that game and an extra transfer pak for me and my brother. I was so excited and we played it so much. I still have my original copy of Pokemon Stadium 1 too with much of my old team saved in the records and preset teams.

Come to think of it, I can't remember when was the first time I saw Iwata. He was always kind of there in everything Nintendo-related. He blended into my gaming memories so well and I feel weird now.

I read the news this morning and couldn't believe what i was reading. The news makes me so sad as i have a crazy big respect for Nintendo , Mr.Iwata and all of his contributions to gaming.

The guy looked like he was honest and proud to work for Nintendo. I will miss the Directs, his charismatic nature and his funky way of viewing gaming.

R.I.P Mr.Iwata !

Starting to feel quite a bit better now, but I don't think this will truly sink in until I see that he is completely gone from E3, and/or the next Nintendo Direct...

I'm all out of practice, but I made something in honor of Mr. Iwata.

I'm still having a hard time believing it to be completely honest. :(

I still can't believe the man its gone, it just won't sink in.

I just keep thinking that there will be a direct tomorrow and he'll be there as always with the usual greeting: "Hello everyone, this is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo."

Its simply heartbreaking.

It won't stop hurting.

You think we're gonna have a direct this August? It's gonna feel really strange. You got that feeling of Iwata missing.

:(

how can they do Nintendo Directs now? It won't be the same. mr. Iwata was a rare breed for the gaming world, and I can honestly say i'll miss his weirdness and generally care free attitude in presenting.

Godspeed Mr. Iwata.

Godspeed Mr. Iwata.

I don't think they can or should abandon Directs, from either a business perspective or respect. I think Iwata would want someone to go out there and do goofy things when presenting games.

People will initially feel weird about it, but a Direct or two down the line, they'll start anticipating them again.

I think I remember reading an article on Gamespot or somewhere way back when, when I rarely even read gaming news online, about Nintendo having a new president. And thinking, that this is some Japanese guy I've never heard of, and things probably won't be different in any meaningful way. Just another suit (of course, ~12 year old me wouldn't put it in so many words). Little did I know how great he would be. Or for that matter, what a character Yamauchi was himself.

The first time I really saw him was probably at E3 2004 though. The first E3 I really watched as it was happening (rather than just checking out headlines and trailers). I don't know if I watched live that year, I probably didn't know how yet. But I did see the videos from it, watched the whole conference somewhere. I'll never forget how excited I was about Zelda, I know that much. I'm pretty sure Iwata was in that show, and that was my first real introduction to him.

I don't think Iwata would have wanted the Directs to stop. I think that would disappoint him and I think the people that work at Nintendo understand that.

I want to accept this news and move on. I really do. But I can't. I just fucking can't. I've never admired someone the way I admired Satoru Iwata. It hurts too much. Why was this wonderful man taken away from us?

I still wish Nintendo.com to have a home page dedicated to Iwata and his accomplishments.
It is very strange for a company who put the man front and centre in such a big way not to have any official acknowledgement on the main page. There's still a link to Iwata Asks, as if nothing happened.

I think Iwata would want the Directs and live stuff to expand more than anything. We've gone from simple Directs to digital events, Treehouse Live streams and recently the NWC which was a tribute to all Nintendo fans.

I highly suggest playing Earthbound in a group of some kind.

The game can get...obtuse, certainly. But the most fun I had streaming it was people sharing Earthbound memories, saying "I can't wait until he gets to that next part!", etc.

It's a community game in a lot of ways. Also there's a reason they gave you a strategy guide with it.

Even if they don't abandon Directs, im wondering if they'll go back to live E3 conferences, what with the NX almost certainly being introduced next year.

I doubt it, while this e3 didn't go great (though in retrospect it kind of makes sense), the year before had huge amounts of praise from just about everyone.

I Know I'm a little late, but I want to contribute to that thread.

I hope we will see Iwata outlook on the future of consoles when NX hits and hopefully becomes a hit (a hit in my eyes would be better sales than Wii U) and I guess Nintendo will get this right.

A true genius and kind person left us way to early...

Maybe next year because of hardware, but I think they really like the Direct format in general. I don't think they enjoy the awkwardness of the stage show.

I suck at processessing sadness. I typically try to turn it into laughter, and end up making uncomfortable "too soon" jokes. It's not with malice, it's how I tend to cope.

I have avoided commenting in fear of offending somebody, but I do need to leave my condolences as well.

That all being said, I was sifting through the Miiverse posts of sadness, and among all the "RIP, Mr. Iwata" posts, there was one extremely sincere one that misunderstandingly said, "We'll miss you, Miyamoto. RIP" and I broke into laughter, imagining the person posting that realizing later on that Miyamoto is OK. It was cute.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata. Thanks for all you've done.

Same. I found out yesterday but didn't get around to posting.
Someone's probably already said this, but it's especially sad that he had to go at such a time where the company's outlook is uncertain, never mind the E3 fallout and all the preceding doom 'n' gloom. I wonder how well Nintendo will stick to all the stuff that's happened under his operation - the Directs, Iwata Asks, etc. - and what will change. I doubt the Directs will stop, but who knows what they'll look like come the next one (August? September?). :(

RIP, Iwata-san. Gone too soon.

It really warms my heart to imagine what he must have felt when he saw the Nintendo World Championship's participants play Balloon Fight in front of that beautiful crowd.

My coping mechanism has been to just dive into the business end of it.

I wrote a long post on tumblr about where I think Nintendo's going and at the end of the exhaustive process of writing it, I felt better.

People are going to cope in different ways. For me it was to engage in shop talk.

I admit shedding tears over this news, even though I don't usually get very emotional with death news. Nintendo has had an enormous influence on my life and they represent all the good things I love about games. Through his public presence, Iwata became a personification of Nintendo, and I guess that is why his death touches me on a personal level besides being a tragedy for him and his family and friends. He was a champion of the medium, a visionary, and according to everything I've heard, a great human being. He made great things both directly and indirectly through his work and that legacy will always remain.

My avatar put on a Mario hat when Galaxy was released. It will remove it now to honor him.

Really depends on how much time you want to dedicate, a Kirby game you can beat in a day while Earthbound is 25+ hours

As for the two Kirby games, he's listed as Chief producer for Dreamland 3 and Supervisor for Crystal Shards here: http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Satoru_Iwata

Edit: Although that wiki doesn't even make mention of Balloon Fight, how odd

Everyone needs to play Dreamland 3. I beat it last week and it's such a joy due to the ost and small things like the animations the animal buddies make. The game is just adorable and the level design is fun with objectives for each stage. Animal Friends add some variety to the powers too. Game looks amazing with it's artstyle as well, the amount of animation put into things is amazing for an snes game. Love the reaction of other animals when they don't get picked as the animal you want, they all get upset and jealous. It's sad to find out that I played both Kirby Dreamland 2 and 3 leading up to Iwatas death, not knowing til now the huge role he had in those games.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I had hoped that we would see some kind of tribute besides the thread as Neogaf Banner one day later....really disappointing.

The posts and especially the way the opening posts is being updated are great though - really appreciated.
