Does anyone know if I can find a copy of the "creating something unique" sign that was behind Iwata in his directs? I would love to get one for my office.
It's quite common for Japanese companies to order calligraphers to create custom pieces. I believe that the 独創 piece is custom, and thus copies of it could be a bit tricky to find.

The OP has become a beautiful memorial. Maybe I missed it, but including Miiverse pictures might be nice. Here's a good collection:

I'm playing Nintendo games today and having a blast in memory of Iwata. Just finished with Mario Kart 8 and later I will go buy Splatoon. It feels right :)

Going to spend my evening playing Super Mario World and Kirby Superstar. They're games I grew up playing and I was always happy playing them.

I played a lot of Bloodborne last night. Not a Nintendo game, but I know Iwata would be fascinated by the game, its concept, feel, etc.

I did follow that up with The Wind Waker HD, however, so I still got some Vitamin N. ;-)

Yeah. I wonder how much time he got to enjoy playing other company's games. Probably not much.

I felt better and then went through the first post again and feel a bit sad again. Man really, all these industry people sharing their sympathy is heart warming and shows what impact Iwata actually had.

There's a wonderful story about him patrolling the shop floor at Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters prior to the Wii U's release, being shown the line-up for the console's impending launch in his role as the company's president. He paused on Balloon Trip Breeze, a mini-game within Nintendo Land which paid tribute to Balloon Fight, the 1984 game on which Iwata acted as programmer. Noticing something wasn't quite right with the feel of the characters as they flapped their way across the screen, he astonished everyone present as he set about fixing it - the head of the company rolling his sleeves up and getting stuck into the code.

This goddamn guy.

Damn, he looks almost back to normal here.

This is why it all came as such a shock. The first we heard of his illness was after he had already had the "successful" surgery to deal with it. As far as we knew, and judging by the fact that he seemed to be looking better as time went on, his issues were in the past.

He looks noticeably thinner though. :(

Especially around the neck and chin.

The change in difference between how he looks then and his last public photo from June 18th is absolutely staggering, and I don't think there was a significant change in lighting.

I think that when his health started rapidly deteriorating, it was already too late. I just hope he didn't suffer long as a result.

Somebody posted this pic yesterday. It's meant to be used as a Facebook cover. Only problem is that the Facebook buttons got in the way of the "Satoru Iwata 59-15" at the bottom right so I modified it slightly so that they don't. Feel free to use.

Thank you, now using it as my Facebook cover.

Compared to how he looked not too long before that, the weight loss is already kind of apparent and his hair is starting to look thinner and greyer.

of course, it's still not quite as rough as he looked in the FE Fates thing :(

It's weird that we all so readily accepted the idea that he was fine and recovering after the surgery. Looking at the facts for his type of cancer his chances were never good. Guess we just wanted to believe it was true.

I posted this a while back but since there are new people here and it's been a while longer I thought I'd post it again for those who still want to do something to honor his memory but don't know what to do.

I'm on the same boat, I don't want to even play today or do anything else, it's weird :/

Don't know what to do with myself today. Just can't get into anything.

Ditto. Work has just been...blah.

I want to make a tribute but I just don't know what to do, I can't think straight.

I'm going on leave next month to see my 4yr old son, and he's so excited that's he's going to get to play Mario with daddy.

That's the magic of Nintendo.

We're going to have such a blast with Mario Kart, and 3D World and who knows what else.

If could make a suggestion for those of you who are mourning but don't know exactly what to do. This might sound appealing to you.

Caring and tending for something that embodies someone you've lost is a really good way to cope with loss and helps with the grieving process. Plants are extremely therapeutic and healing. Specifically tending to and growing a plant is simply a good thing, it is constantly filtering air and so much more.

Try going to the store and picking out a plant that you think Mr Iwata would like or that you think embodies him or that just seems special to you. Find a special spot in your yard (or in a pot on a windowsill) and plant it in memory of him. Take care of it and depending on what you planted it could last for years, it could cover the ground for you to lay on with your Gameboy or it could tower over you and provide shelter for you as a tree for you and your kids to play under. It could be a cactus plant that would last the rest of your life or a flower that blooms only at night. If you live in the right climate you could even plant a banana tree.

I am a community garden manager and I would be willing to help anyone with this as best as I can. Specifically with what soil to use for what plant and you can PM me if you ever have any problems or questions now and in the future and I will try to help you as best as I can.

Take pictures of what you did and PM them to me and I will put a thread together in the future. Maybe on the anniversary of his passing next year. I think that would be nice.

We didn't know what ailed him though. I certainly didn't. The first time I heard about a "bile duct growth" was after he'd passed away. I had no clue he was that ill.

I want to make a topic about voting for Balloon Fighter in the Smash Ballot in memory of Iwata but I want to 100% be sure the topic won't be closed or worse yet I won't be banned. A few people here have said it's a good idea and that's why I've considered it but I'd like some opinions first. I know the general idea is that if you're in doubt then don't do it so maybe it's better not to. Is it too specific to be a topic of its own?

So upset about this. Satoru Iwata is without doubt the driving force behind me making a success in life.

Back in early 2000s I was a bit of a bum with a crappy job which had little hope of progression. Around that time, being a lifelong Nintendo fan (somewhat lapsed) I bought a GameCube because of some footage I saw of Luigis Mansion, needless to say I was pretty blown away with it, and then FZero GX, DK:JB, RE4, Paper Mario, etc etc really got me interested again in videogames. I started to read about Nintendo in magazines and on the internet. Time went on and although the GC wasnt a huge success its absolute quality had me convinced that someone was making the right decisions. Additionally, I kept reading about Nindendos new direction seemingly orchestrated by Saturo Iwata, I was always interested in what he had to say, I always reflected on what he said and thought "This guys knows whats up". Then the DS came out, then Bue Ocean strategy started to be talked about and I really felt that Nintendo was gaining momentum and was on the up.

One day I saw - I think it was in edge magazine - a tiny 3 line with image announcement of Nintendogs, and I thought to myself I have to do something with this. So I left my crappy job, hired a website developer and built a site dedicate to Nintendo. 18 months later, shortly after the Wiis launch, the site was booming and got an offer from an associated company to sell up and go and work for them in somewhat of a dream job.

Nearly 10 years later I still work at the company loving my role, enjoying all the benefits of having a great job in the industry - I travel the world on business seeing things that I'd never dream of when I was grinding away at my crappy job 15 years ago.

Even in recent times I've still considered Satoru Iwata to be key in my learning and general progression in life as for example when I've read with awe his incredibly open, reflective and constructive Nintendo Directs.

Thanks for everything Satoru Iwata. I really owe you.

Nearly 2 days later, it still sucks. I've had countless things go across my mind, mostly questions. Mostly about Iwata, his motives and how he managed to work through it all. I wonder who will succeed him, both as Global President and CEO of Nintendo of America. I have never felt more bad for Nintendo than I do now. I know people have questioned Iwata's business practices, his leadership, etc. but if he weren't so important to us, I doubt we'd be expressing the sense of loss we have now.

There is never going to be another Satoru Iwata. Ever. For all of his jokes and catchphrases, he was the living embodiment of everyone's Uncle Nintendo when we were growing up, bragging about him in the schoolyard. And you know what? That's a better title than CEO or Programmer to me, because it makes him a Legend.

Still reeling from the shock. I don't know anything about this type of cancer, but I really, really hope that he did not suffer too long. Just thinking about it makes me feel awful.

He's flying to a better place now... Rest in peace.

You might have not known but we were told after his surgery. We were told he'd had a tumour removed from his bile duct and was recovering. Nintendo and Iwata downplayed any concerns over his health after that so thats probably why people like yourself hadn't heard.

Here to pay my respects. I didn't cry, but I almost did thinking about the puppets and his last message that they would try harder in the future.

Around E3, someone on twitter told me they thought Reggie looked 'off' at E3, and I chalked it up to him knowing they had a bad show and that he wasn't good at damage control. Given that they've had bad E3's before, and how that never really shook him before, I now have to imagine this is why he looked 'off' to some people.
