Emo Music |OT| Non-Conforming as Can Be

Well, because of exams I totally forgot to come here but recently Citizen released their new record.

They took a lot (maybe too much at times) inspiration from Devil and God/Daisy but I think overall, it's a good record. It just sticks too close to Brand New at times that it just feels lacking compared to them. But, in a bubble, I do enjoy it.

Just found out about Jeff Rosenstock today. Been listening to his stuff on repeat all day. It's absolutely amazing.

Favorite tracks are You In Weird Cities, Nausea, and Go On Get though all of his stuff is great. You can listen at his Bandcamp here.

Edit: Just FYI, looks like he did a ton of music before that with a band called Bomb the Music Industry too.

oh this is neat, didn't know he does solo stuff. loved Bomb the Music Industry too.

I'm listening to Bomb the Music Industry right now. Liking it pretty much equally (AKA a lot). His stuff is right up my alley. Absolutely loving it.

It looks like Bomb the Music Industry split up and now he's just doing solo stuff now, by the way.

Anyways, glad to hear there's another fan of his in here!

One of my favourite records of the year. It's just so good and some of those lyrics are really gut punching. Awesome stuff.

Didn't know there was an OT for my music! Although I think "Pop-punk" is a more appropriate genre name.

Anyways, I'm on mobile but I'll post it later, everyone needs to go check out the new Spraynard album.

The track "Applebee's Bar" has this emo/pop-punk gem:

"I am every person that you've ever ignored, I am the flaming bag of dog shit on your porch"

Rosenstock is legitimately the most interesting person in music in my opinion. Dood's great.

There's a lot of crossover between the two, but some bands I wouldn't say all emo bands are pop-punk. Stuff like Mineral or American Football. God I fucking love Mineral. Parking Lot wrecks me.

But that's a pointless semantic argument, Spraynard are fucking rad, and welcome!

Been listening to Jeff Rosenstock nonstop since I found out about him yesterday afternoon. So great.

Is there more stuff I don't know about him besides his solo stuff, Bomb the Music Industry, and his donation-based record label? Not that all of that stuff isn't enough to make him the most interesting person in music, just making sure I'm not missing out on some other awesome stuff. Haha

Antarctigo Vespucci, his project with Chris Farren, Punk Celebrity

Arrogant Sons Of Bitches, his old ska band from pre-BtMI!

Both of which should have their stuff on Quote Unquote, as far as I'm aware

EDIT: Fuck, I really need to stop looking up bands on the work Google account

emo and pop-punk aren't the same thing even if some bands are on the line between the too.

But let's avoid genre discussions, anything in the spectre is fair game here.

Except for "scene" music, that's where I draw the line.

I've only listened to "Why Cool?" by him but man, that records it's so good. Some songs hit me really hard. Just so good.

After listening to his other solo album and a few of the Bomb the Music Industry albums, We Cool? is still definitely my favorite from him (though the other stuff is very good as well and still worth listening to). You're right about the lyrics though. Definitely some close-to-home stuff that hits hard.

Agreed, Spraynard new album sounds cool. Been listening to it as well this week. Gonna check out this Jeff Rosenstock fella, never heard of him before.

*edit* Oh, he's been in Bomb The Music Industry, that throws me way back. Been such a long time since I've listened to those guys.

A great band called sports. from MA just released a new album. It's a free download off their bandcamp, amazing album so far! Their sound is a mix of twinkly/slightly heavy guitar emo with some double time punk with cool grooves and interludes.

Man, I haven't heard this song since High School. (A long-ass time ago) Takes me back!

Taking Back Sunday - Great Romances of the 20th Century

BTW, I'm going to sound like an old man here, but it would appear what I call 'emo' and what the kids call 'emo' have become two very different things. To me, these are just hardcore/metal bands with flat-ironed hair... like, when I was a teen a decade ago, there really wasn't an 'emo' look. it was more of a vacuum of fashion, lol. I wouldn't complain about it normally, but reading this thread, it sounds like most everybody in this thread is coming from the same place as I am...

There's been an "emo revival" going on for a couple years now, so the term emo has increasingly reverted back to the back to its 90s Midwest definition.

Really like that Tender Defender track, and now I'm listening to Latterman for the first time. Good stuff so far.

Here is my contribution: Ceres from Melbourne, Australia. I have a hard time thinking of bands they sound like, but there's occasionally some Get Up Kids and some Promise Ring in there. More rock than both of those bands though.

My favourite is the Luck EP, but the other stuff is good too. There's another EP and album on the Hobbledehoy Records BandCamp page, as well as an outstanding single for free download.

The Hotelier just announced an Australian tour, so I'll be seeing them in a couple of months yaaaaas

Related: I am waiting for Brand New to finish setting up in Alexandra Palace in London. Hella pumped.

Latterman are the best band. You should check out RVIVR and Iron Chic too, both have ex-Latterman members and are rad.

Didn't know there was an emo thread. Yay!

Seeing mineral and hum tomorrow, this'll be my first time seeing them live. So Ampt to see mineral, one of my favorite bands of all time.

I'm seeing Brand New tonight. So stoked. Just hope they also play some more old stuff as well.

How was it? What songs did they play?

Have fun with that. Saw Mineral twice this year, loved it both times. Second time was at Groezrock, and had a bizarre moment with one of my friends who couldn't decide whether to watch Mineral or Lagwagon. After having watched Knapsack. In 2015.

Anyone heard the new TWIABP song? It's real fucking good. Like, really fucking good.

Lol, hopefully he chose Mineral. Not that I dislike lagwagon. I'm actually seeing them this November. I believe they're coming to west Hollywood or SD, I forget which.

Great TWIABP track, love that band.

Last night was great. Mineral did an amazing job and I met a girl. The only downer was I had to miss out on hum due to LA parking. The parking lot I parked at was closing at 11 :(

I think the drummer of failure was there, if I'm not mistaken.

Milwaukeean here, so I've been listening a lot of The Promise Ring lately. I imagine they'll have to do a reunion show soon.

Didn't know this thread existed, awesome.

Anybody check out the new Marietta album? It was pay what you want on bandcamp a few weeks ago, pretty sure it still is.

Favourite tracks off it are probably Pony Up, Are You Afraid of God? No, But I'm Afraid of You, and No God in New Jersey if anybody wants to take a peek.
