Updated following games LTD as December 2008:
Pokemon XD (GC): +50K
Kirby Air Ride (GC) : +10K
Pikmin 2 (GC): +10K
Mario Baseball (GC): +50k

Mario Vs Donkey Kong (GBA): +10K

I also changed the Virtual Boy LTD from 1,26 million to 0,77 million.
I had to do it because only recently I realized Aquamarine said the number she gave for VB wasn't told her directly by Nintendo so I had to turn back to the known total shipment through March 1996.
The aim of this thread is to host only Nintendo shipment data.

Aquamarine said:
I have some figures that I believe are much more accurate to the truth. However, these didn't come directly from Nintendo Co. Ltd.,'s internal archives, so I can't guarantee their accuracy.

I've updated the Nintendo shipment data thread (Wii, DS, 3DS, Wii U hardware and software) as March 2015.

New entry in the million selling list:
Kirby Triple Triple Deluxe: 1,78M
Majora's Mask 3D: 2,03M
Smash Bros. For 3DS: 6,75M
Smash Bros. WiiU: 3,65M

Fun fact:
After about 7 yeats Smash Bros. Brawl surpassed Super Mario Galaxy on Wii.

Updated Fire Emblem Awakening LTD as December 2014 and added for each game the date for which the sales data is updated to.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
How on earth did Link's Crossbow Training outsell Skyward Sword?

Skyward Sword arrived pretty late in Wii's life, when many people had moved on to other consoles. Crossbow Training was released when the Wii was at its most popular.

Time of release had a big influence in this case (btw the two games are very different despite both having Zelda characters).
One was released in 2007 (when Wii was booming) the other in 2011 (when Wii was dying down).
If you note the difference between SS and TP is even bigger and that's excluding the notable sales of TP on GC.

Interesting that every Mario Party has sold over a million, pretty consistent. Do you think Mario Party 10 will make it past the million mark? It came out at the end of March so it's obviously not there but considering the state of the Wii U I'm not sure.

Also Metroid: Other M and Zero Mission didn't make it. I can understand Other M not being there but Zero Mission was good.

Additionally those 3DS software sales are better than I thought, much better actually.

Overall though in total Nintendo's software sales are amazing.

I don't think you can discount the art style as another reason.

You really don't think it's possible the cel shaded style is less appealing to the mainstream audience than the realistic TP style?

Skyward Sword wasn't cel-shaded. And no, I don't believe that is a noteworthy factor here. People having irrational hate for motion controls is something I'd give far more weight in this scenario.

So much data! Cheers, OP.

To think that of all the millions of game (console) buying people in the world, only less than 10 million of them have considered the Wii U a worthy machine to purchase at one point remains just baffling to me.

I of course know that Nintendo probably could not have done worse to differentiate the machine from its predecessor in terms of marketing, and also that the market has greatly shifted towards mobile between the Wii and Wii U, but you'd think that the raw fact that many of the games people fell over themselves to purchase for the Wii and (3)DS are also available in a newer, often better form for the Wii U, would at least give people some incentive to pick up a Wii U. But apparently that isn't really the case for anyone except Nintendo's most loyal fans, of which we might say there are around 10 million total (if we assume that every Nintendo fan has bought a Wii U - which seems like a stretch).

Also, from a pure software sales point of view, it seems that it took Nintendo until the DS and Wii to reach and surpass the sales numbers of the NES days again in terms of big hits, which is quite baffling as well if you consider how much the total games market must have grown between then and now.

Finally: why is there no Wii U version of Wii Sports Resort by now, or a HD version Sunshine? Both sold very well relative to their fellow platform siblings so why not make updated versions Nintendo?

Because they don't make these decisions based purely on sales. Wii Sports Club didn't do too hot and there was no excitement around that game's execution either and adding GamePad features to paddling, archery and frisbee throwing is probably not something that makes much sense anyway. Sunshine is way too flawed for a simple HD version and would need a lot of tweaking. Makes total sense that they're not falling over themselves with making an HD version of that game.

NES was Nintendo most successful home console until Wii that's why.
Despite how well regarded the SNES is, it's first party sales were weak IMO.

Nintendo historically traded marketshare for profits, even when their home console declined in marketshare their profits remained stable (the exception of course it's the latest few years).

Nintendo series total sales as March 2015 (only million seller).

UIV87Ib.png

EDIT:
Also note that i considered only series with more than 1 million-seller (sorry Fire Emblem).

EDIT2:
Also no external IPs like Layton or Rare IPs.

It's absolutely unreal how much money Nintendo made on Wii/DS. So completely off the scale compared to any other video game platform in history. They probably made more profit from 2004-2011 alone than in their 115 years as a company before that.

Thanks.

Keep in mind I will update this thread once a year (in May when Nintendo announces the full fiscal year results).

Wii didn't outsell PS1?!

interesting.
Keep in mind that what Sony communicated for PS1 is production shipment (that is how many they have manufactured) while Nintendo communicated for Wii the shipment (that is the units sold to retailers).

At least the price didn't entirely collapse (at least here in Europe).

Oh, finally. It deserved so much more though.

Damn. Well deserved, one of my favorite games ever.

This could be good or sad, depending on how the figures are calculated.

If it includes digital then it's rather dissapointing given that there would be an amount that was basically a freebie. Think that it was a reward in several occassions.

i would be really interested in the Platinum Trinity. Also i would check the original post to see if there's some Pikimin 3 data, that game deserves a lot better than what it got.

Awesome! Deserved at least this much. Not bad on a userbase this small imo.

I'm done with updating the spreadsheet but I'm too tired to update OP now (I will update the old data as December 2014, the rest will still be until March 2015).
Will do in a few days.

DKCTF LTD as December 2014 = 1.12M

Read OP.

Pikmin 3 isn't a million seller, at least as December 2014.
Same for the Platinum trinity.
