I think there was a tweet saying that the press has been informed that it'll be the next DQ. It's pretty much confirmed at this point.

I wouldn't exactly say a PS3 version is a lock.

Every announced DQ game for PlayStation is coming to PS3. So a PS3 version is pretty much locked, if DQXI is for PS consoles.
Sony would have to pay a f***ton of money to make this PS4 exclusive...

The only other platform besides PS3+PS4, and it's only a remote possibility for the future, would be the home console implementation of NX. Nintendo (more precisely, the late Iwata) indicated Nintendo is developing both home console & handheld with a common core architecture, OS and development / programming structure, etc. Regardless of the specific power/performance level targeted for each platform. That is exactly why I said "console implementation of NX -- I also understand that when Nintendo announced NX, they were actually most likely referring to the next console. We'll see. Again, it's only a possibility down the road, and a remote one at that.

I am at least 95% positive that on Tuesday, Dragon Quest XI will be announced for PS3 and PS4 only.

TBH, Square Enix releases FFXV and KH3 only on PS4/XBone, I could see that DQXI is only PS4 to push the PS4 further in Japan.

Maybe they only releasing Spin-Offs like DGH on PS3/4/Vita.

I hope you all get this out of your system now, because we're moving to zero tolerance for platform whining once the announcement is made.

The fact that there hasn't been a single DQ spin-off for Wii U makes it seem very, very unlikely. They've clearly been pushing the franchise towards Sony platforms ...despite the obvious money they'd have made on the 3DS.

I suppose there's a slim chance of it being on NX since it'll likely launch around the same time as the next DQ but my feeling is it'll be exclusive to Sony platforms.

If Wii U had gotten anything I'd have thought it would have been a port of Dragon Quest Builders... as creation software like that is really made for touch screens. The fact it didn't, doesn't bode well.
Well, it doesn't have a DQ spinoff, true.
But it does have a (port of a) mainline DQ with an active userbase.

So, just because SQEX is "PS4 uber alles" right now doesn't change the fact that they should suck up this one nod for those players, after all, it's not the fault of those gamers that SQEX changed their direction.

I hope you all get this out of your system now, because we're moving to zero tolerance for platform whining once the announcement is made.
On this day, i will visit NeoGAF logged out, just to make sure to stay away from that thread.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I just read other guy complaining about it too.. :(
Well I hope you guys can find good proxy or something.

Thanks man...hope i can figure something out till tomorrow. I still have an old nico account, but im likely to get kicked during the presentation.

Maybe someone on twitch will stream the event...believe.

DQIX taught everyone a lesson.

What about localisation discussion?

Hah....not really...people never learn, see MH, DQ etc. - but at least you cant say they werent warned.

and more recently Persona 5 too. You could hardly step into a Persona 5 hype topic before it was announced without seeing pages of which console will it come to. And even after the PS4 port begging was tremendous.

I've learned to just stay out of these threads for the most part until the livestream is over so that relevant discussion is what I'm seeing.

Moving away from the subject of platform(s), what might be a plausible release window for Japan? Dragon Quest games tend to be announced long before release. Might we be looking at 2017 ?

It's going to be released in 2016. They're not going to miss the series's 30th anniversary.

2016. I remember some confirmation last year that it was already in development.

Manette is the word we use in France to name a controller and many of my friends used "la manette du gameboy" or "la manette de la DS" because that'S how they refer to the buttons and the pad on the device. But that's beside the point.

"The game was designed around a controller" or "The game was designed with a controller in mind" means that it's based around pad/thumbs/buttons inputs. Nothing more, nothing less. Otherwise, how would you name a game for portable consoles that's on them instead of mobiles because you want them to be played with buttons, pads and the like?

I was born in France and I've never heard "la manette du Gameboy" or "la manette de la DS".

"les boutons de la Gameboy" at least, manette is for game controllers (for home consoles).

The question is how long will it be between Japanese and western releases.

that, and it fits nice and neat in the 3-5 year development cycles for these games since dqv

dq v (1992)
dq vi (1995)
dq vii (2000)
dq viii (2004)
dq ix (2009)
dq x (2012)
dq xi (2016)

Maturity, bitches.
I'm curious if they'll bring back custom characters from IX or go back to a pre defined cast, or maybe a mix of both by having just the silent hero being a custom character.

DQ IX :
Press Conference : 2006
Intended Release Year : 2007
Actual Release Year : 2009

Delay was presumably due to having to change up the gameplay from the originally intended A-RPG style back to traditional turn-based.

DQX :
Press Conference : 2011
Release Year : 2012

DQXI :
Press Conference : 2015
Release Year : 201X?

It's almost definitely targeting a 2016 release imo. 30th Anniversary, and it's always how the press conference structure for DQ mainline games work.

At this point, localization sounds more like a when than an if. Depending on the platforms and their number, they might not all get a localization though.

I hope so. DQ7 still hasn't come to any PAL territory. Hence my interest in whether localisation talk is frowned upon or not.

DQIX was targeting a 2007 release date at first, so the 5 year gap between VIII and IX wasn't intended in the first place.

I am hoping for custom characters with pre-defined roles/personalities.

You design "the hero", "the princess", "the best friend"...and they all act out the same storyline and have actual personalities.

Every "best friend" character will have the same lines and same part in the story, but look different.

When I used to lurk and before P5 was revealed, I remember seeing people who were adamant Persona 5 would/should be a 3DS game too I'm pretty sure.

Hopefully pre-defined. Even though I loved IX the last two games have had custom party members so I think it's time for a change.

Persona 5, much like some of the discussion surrounding DQXI now, is fodder for platform speculation that becomes somewhat annoying.

Just hope after tomorrow, the discussion can move on from the platform to more about the game.

Which was both funny and odd people even thought that would be possible.

It just goes back to this whole mentality that because 3DS' user base is so big, everything should be on it. It's really shortsighted.

On another note, how long is Dragon Quest VI? I started it yesterday and got about 10 hours in (loving it so far, even more so than IX, though its hard to compare to VII right now).

I'm up to the part where
King Somnus looks into the mirror and transforms into Apnea
. I know that's probably not far, but I'm just curious to know how big the game is.

If DQ11 is announced for PS4 tomorrow... it will be an JRPG console equal to PS1/PS2.
How do you figure, if it does come out on PS4 then the PS4 will still be majorly lacking in that department 1 new and 2 remake FF games plus 1 new DQ game does not make for an RPG system even rivaling the Genesis, let alone ps/ps2.

Somewhere around 35 - 45 hrs based on my own playthroughs - but I'm a slow player. It's longer than DQIV and V, but not by much, I think.

What are the chances the over world will be on a 1:1 scale in relation to the characters? Would people want that?
Like DQVIII? I'd say pretty high since it'll probably be perceived as a step back if they go with a world map structure (though I didn't mind Ni No Kuni's kind). I just hope if they're going for that scale that they give us plenty exploration incentives. DQVIII didn't have enough imo.

As far as platforms go, it makes the most sense for them to be on everything that has a pulse in Japan. I don't think they'd get to 4-5 million sold just with PS3/PS4.

I think the sales from Nintendo platforms would easily make up for losing marketing/localization money from Sony, and vice-versa.

PS4 has Star Ocean, Tales of series, Kindom Hearts, Persona, plus other RPG studio's output (Gust, Falcom, Nippon Ichi, etc). Bascailly every single remaining 3rd party RPG series is on PS4, how you can compare it to the Genesis is beyond me.

There are other JRPG series outside of FF and DQ.

That's kind of the keyword there, isn't it? I doubt the PS4 will ever reach the width the PS2 or PS1 had, simply because the market for Japanese RPGs (on consoles) in general seems to be quite a bit smaller than in the past. The heavy-hitters are definitely coming, but the space between "heavy hitters" and "weird otaku pandering shit" is still relatively sparsely populated.

Still, if somehow Shadow Hearts ends indeed up on PS4 in some form, I won't complain about the console's line-up ever. I still don't know why people put so much stock in Verendus' list, though...
