How do you figure, if it does come out on PS4 then the PS4 will still be majorly lacking in that department 1 new and 2 remake FF games plus 1 new DQ game does not make for an RPG system even rivaling the Genesis, let alone ps/ps2.

I can understand PS1 and PS2 since both have unrivalled jrpg lineups (IMO of course) but Genesis?

Whilst the Sega systems had some fine jrpgs, they never had the variety the PS consoles enjoyed.

That's kind of the keyword there, isn't it? I doubt the PS4 will ever reach the width the PS2 or PS1 had, simply because the market for Japanese RPGs (on consoles) in general seems to be quite a bit smaller than in the past. The heavy-hitters are definitely coming, but the space between "heavy hitters" and "weird otaku pandering shit" is still relatively sparsely populated.

Still, if somehow Shadow Hearts ends indeed up on PS4 in some form, I won't complain about the console's line-up ever. I still don't know why people put so much stock in Verendus' list, though...

There are also fresh guy though. Developers like Falcom are not that active on console front back in PS2 era.

If this is true and FFXV is also coming in 2016, it will be the first time FF and DQ release in the same year since FFIX and DQ7

If KH3, FF15 and DQ11 release all in the same year.

Well yeah, that's what padded means. Too much quantity, not enough actual content, in the end it only serves the purpose of artificially extending play time.

Depends on what you mean by actual content. Are you referring to the shiny spots in Xenoblade or the shards in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

Hell no? I thought the over world added to the immersion of the game. It made me feel like I was really on a grand adventure. I'd rather take an overworld like that rather than what we have been getting from every other JRPG, no overworld at all..

Side places to actually go. Most of the time DQ8 was about moving from point A to point B but now it takes 3 times longer than other DQ games.

I would take DQ8's full scale overworld over no overworld any day, mind you.

I just rather they have a smaller one.

Didn't level 5 do a 3DS game and then port the game (gloriously I might add) to PS3? NiNoKuNi I believe also has a 3DS version?

Figured DQ would just do that I dunno, makes sense to me anyway.

The reason why dragon quest 8's overworld was so special is because it was a direct transition of the series between 2d and 3d. Towns existing on an actual overworld map. You got a perfect sense of the world because you got to explore all of it. They didn't butcher the exploration of that series like they did with final fantasy when it jumped to PS2. They kept the sense of a grand adventure. Yeah the overworld was big and empty, but the game would not have been as memorable or as good if the overworld was not there.

The overworld becomes so relatively trivial in this game since they give you Zoom so early.

IMO some games just go too big. These days I prefer games that use a hub or smaller maps these days because of it.

Somewhere around 35 - 45 hrs based on my own playthroughs - but I'm a slow player. It's longer than DQIV and V, but not by much, I think.

Awesome. I've found a fair few used copies of DQV and IV online, albeit V being practically full retail price but I'll bite once I'm done with VI. Then take a long breather after those before I try out I-III on mobile.

That said, I saw that Dragon Quest I and II aren't compatible with Android 5.0 and upwards. Any signs of Square Enix fixing this any time soon? It's a bit strange.

I didn't even read the 3D on the DS, d'oh.
In your defense, the game never came out in America and never even had a chance to.

But, it was a very solid looking DS game.

Not sure if you're North America or not, but Square Enix sells IV and V directly through Amazon. They're both $45 brand new though, but the games are definitely worth the price.

Whilst the Sega systems had some fine jrpgs, they never had the variety the PS consoles enjoyed.

I mean to say that the ps4 jrpg lineup is weak, and so far weaker than even the genesis, which compared to other consoles has a weak jrpg collection (although I do like the shining and phantasy star series)

There are other JRPG series outside of FF and DQ.

That's my point, if I were to walk to Bic or Yodobashi after work and ask to see the jrpgs I would see FF14, Type 0 and an advertisement for 15.

PS4 has Star Ocean, Tales of series, Kindom Hearts, Persona, plus other RPG studio's output (Gust, Falcom, Nippon Ichi, etc). Bascailly every single remaining 3rd party RPG series is on PS4, how you can compare it to the Genesis is beyond me.

I see what you are doing here, but until the game is released I don't count it as existing. Just because it is the de facto system does not mean it will get the games. Really I am wrong too, I shouldn't even count 15 or the 7 remake, or the hypothetical DQ 11 because as I have learned from the past (especially with SE), until it is for sale, it is vaporwear.

Thats some mind boggling logic. These games are going to come out. They aren't vapourware.

Maturity, bitches.
How to solve the overworld problem in DQVIII:
  • Make nose for treasure work in the overworld.

OK, a bit more is needed than that, but it would have made running around the map and not even finding a chest or arena monster a bit more bearable.

And I'm the kind of person who can derive enjoyment from just running around. I even liked Twilight Princess' over world.

Only reason I care about Verendus' list is to see what Sony's Japan Studio jRPG is
Please Legend of Dragoon reboot.

The 3DS port solves a big problem by adding seeable enemies. No more random battles. For me, that will make overworld exploration much better.

Maybe it is unfair of me to say they don't exist, but it would also be unfair to ignore instances of developers canceling projects, changing platforms, or delaying a game by a decade.

If I go to the electronics store right now I can buy 4 jrpgs FFX, FF14, FF Type-0, and for the sake of argument DQ Heros (I always viewed it more as a musou than JRPG though) and preorder 2 Gust titles and 1 Nippon Ichi which have dates set.
This is not an jrpg system in the same league as the PS/PS2, that's all I'm saying. Maybe someday, but until then it's still just wishful thinking.

I was born in France and I've never heard "la manette du Gameboy" or "la manette de la DS".

"les boutons de la Gameboy" at least, manette is for game controllers (for home consoles).

I have /shrug we made no difference when I was young and the GB/GG were all the rage at school.

Just be happy it's looking a lot better than PS3 era. That was dreadful. -_-

I give them another year to announce it but after that it officially enters "secret PS3 game" status.
If it's not announced by the end of the year (TGS, PSX), then I'm putting it under the Verendus was full of shit bucket. Shu said they have a game made by their studio being shown at TGS though, I think it's what he's been talking about.
(It wasn't Gravity Rush)

Now you can see the Metal King Slimes you're trying to farm, but still won't appear! :p

So early tomorrow for the megaton, sweet.
I really like the job system so I hope it'll be in.

I also love the job system (specifically unlocking hybrids and monster classes). However they eased the amount of battles you need for it in 7 3DS and they outright gutted it and replaced it with 'weapon points' in 8 and 9, so...

How many times has Verendus "been full of shit" now, but keeps proving the detractors wrong? I know I've eaten my crow in regards to laughing at the fact that any DQ would ever come to Playstation.

Also, Shu didn't say anything of the sort. All Shu said is that "Japan Studio is producing an exciting title." We're not given details on when to expect the reveal.

PS3/4 is obvious choice

but the game play, i think will be some mix between zelda and the witcher 3 of course with all dragon quest elements and party fight

or not.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
is it possible to think about other games aside DQXI? Don't know, maybe the first footage of DQH2, or Joker3, or something like that..maybe even DQXII as a MMOORPG :p

Horii has said that they have Heroes for their action RPG formula. They don't want the two to overlap.

Heroes doesn't scratch the itch of an actual "grand adventure" from town-to-town of a mainline DQ game though.

It'd be great if Heroes could be its own full-fledged numbered-DQ tier RPG with action combat.

DQXI will be the first new, mainline numbered DQ game on console in over a decade. DQ VIII on PS2 released in 2004 (in Japan) was the last. I don't expect Yuji Horii to stray from traditional turn-based battles.
