Dragon Quest press event to be held on 7/28 in Japan, livestreamed, "main series"

Heroes doesn't scratch the itch of an actual "grand adventure" from town-to-town of a mainline DQ game though.

It'd be great if Heroes could be its own full-fledged numbered-DQ tier RPG with action combat.

Horii doesn't think so

(About action combat like Dragon Quest Heroes) "No, Dragon Quest 11 will return to the roots of Dragon Quest. Another action RPG would be like Heroes, and we want to distinguish between the two."

And i'm happy to hear that. There are more than enough RPG's with action-style combat this generation. Something that has more traditional JRPG mechanics with a healthy budget will be a breath of fresh air.

is it possible to think about other games aside DQXI? Don't know, maybe the first footage of DQH2, or Joker3, or something like that..maybe even DQXII as a MMOORPG :p

I think they will show everything DQ. It's a 90 minutes presentation after all.

Secretly, I'm hoping for a DQ7 localization announcement too.

Even if and I say IF we have another Ni no Kuni situation. 3DS version probably wouldn't come to western market, pretty much useless for us.

DQXI will be the first new, mainline numbered DQ game on console in over a decade. DQ VIII on PS2 released in 2004 (in Japan) was the last. I don't expect Yuji Horii to stray from traditional turn-based battles.
I'll make a deal with square enix. They make dragon quest on ps4 a turn based game and they can mess with FF7 remakes battle system.

Huh? Another Ni no Kuni situation will mean shipping along a huge book which i don't think an 3DS DQ will do.

What about if it is announced for phones? We are allowed to legitimately whine, right?

That will be the Ultimate Troll move, i fear for Hino's life if that happens.

You fool, you've made a deal for something you were already getting!

Quick, someone find the contract and tear it up!

Aww man, so back to the turn based format? :/

You can't 'go back' to something it's always been. There was a DQ Monster Battle Road that was more like a card game, you think the series is now cards? DQH is a spin-off.

Real DQ is always turn-based with 8-bit sound effects and a 'retro' feel. When it goes action RPG the genre is officially dead.

Really looking forward to the announcement tomorrow! Hope to be wowed by a beautiful colorful HD world and characters like I was quite impressed with DQ VIII on PS2, even if the world was empty.

A better question:

How many times does it need to be said that this is not a smartphone game and a console game for certain people to realise that this is not a smartphone game and a console game?

I would prefer mainline DQ to be traditional too. What I mean is that I want Heroes to a "bigger" spin-off than what it currently is.

How many times has Verendus "been full of shit" now, but keeps proving the detractors wrong? I know I've eaten my crow in regards to laughing at the fact that any DQ would ever come to Playstation.

Also, Shu didn't say anything of the sort. All Shu said is that "Japan Studio is producing an exciting title." We're not given details on when to expect the reveal.
Verendus talked about this since 2012, so this is the year I'm giving it until. I think we will see it during TGS.

It could evolve into that, but I think we need it to sell a bit more for that to happen.

It's a lot less about when it's been talked about, but more of how the announcement would fit into Sony's usual slots of first-party reveals that they do annually.

Eg. Sony traditionally announces 3-4 1st party games at their E3 show. It's not like they can't show more, but Sony/Shu appears to be content with having that amount at their E3 show, etc.

Mainline DQ has always been turn-based, except the MMO.

They're not going to announce a localization at a Japanese press event. This event has nothing to do with anywhere but Japan.

You're probably right but I wouldn't say it's impossible. They could say something like "We are happy to announce that we will continue to grow the DQ franchise's popularity overseas by releasing 7 and 8 for 3DS", or something to that effect. I know, unlikely, but who knows?

I don't think whining because games are on mobile are allowed anymore, at least based on a thread from weeks ago where people were basically mocking mobile games and getting banned.

And except when Horii was going to make IX not turn-based. I think there was enough backlash that it's unlikely they'll try that again soon. The Heroes games exist to get the action urge out of everyone's system.
The decision to return 9 to turn based came after Horii himself played several prototypes and found them dreadfully boring. I don't think he'll ever do that again.

Aww... 4 p.m. at +8 timezone. :'(
I'll probably won't be able to watch the live stream.

Looking forward seeing the reaction in this thread later.

I dunno if it was the very first, but I just watched this Japanese PS2 trailer for DQ VIII. I don't remember if I ever saw it before or not, but it certainly was majestic.

Just think, DQVIII on PS2 had to have started development during the early 2000s for it to have been released Nov. of 2004. If anyone has a more specific time frame, it would be nice to know, couldn't find anything on wikipedia.

Anyway, given that the next mainline entry was developed on much weaker handheld hardware (DS) and the one after that on Wii (and ported to Wii U and PC among other platforms), I can't wait to see the aesthetics/design of XI. -- Even though nobody (nor I) expect technically astounding graphics. I'm just saying that Yuji Horii and whatever studio is doing the development won't have the kind of limitations that PS2 / Wii had in terms of memory, much less the DS.

I'm personally hoping for a Dragons Quest vs. Final Fantasy fighting game. Who needs another true DQ title?

....

Yeah doesn't work. I'm hyped!

If you don't like turn based combat, you're in the wrong place.

That not what I meant. I'm currently playing Omega Quintet on PS4 and it's by all means a traditional RPG. I loved DQVIII. I just saw this as a possible chance to be able to reimagine itself in the same way SE is doing with FFXV. If it's standard menu fare, then I'll be disappointed, but it won't detract from the game unless it's just not good in the first place.

Level5 went on Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2) right after they shipped Dark Cloud in 2000, so it's unlikely that they were working on DQVIII at the same time. Especially since DQVII only finally shipped in 2000 itself.

According to the Japanese DQVIII Wikipedia entry, Hino and Level-5 got the DQVIII contract in 2001 and started actual development in Spring 2002, but there's no source citation for that. Makes sense though, since when they first announced it at the end of 2002 there was nothing at all. They released some battle shots in 2003, before doing a full unveiling of it in March 2004 ahead of the November release that year.

never heard of that, will have to look it up!
It's a long-running Monopoly-ish game series, typically featuring Dragon Quest characters, but since the merge with Square, there's the PS2 and PSP games that featured FF characters. Unfortunately, none of the games were localized until the Wii game, but that has Mario guests, not FF.

Rdit: apparently there is a mobile game too that I didn't know about!

The appeal to dragon quest is that it holds so true to its traditional gaming systems. That's what made 8 so special was it was a full 3D world that played exactly like all the other games. Most dragon quest fans want the same core gameplay experience but with a new world and story to explore.

It doesn't need to be reinvented; not every turn-based RPG franchise needs to be turned into action. Turn-based still has a lot of fans.

Everybody agrees that the old games from FF and other franchises were better, yet everybody seems to want new ones to be nothing like them for some bizarre reason.
