This, thanks to StreetsAhead, lists 99 amiibo costumes for Super Mario Maker. But there's more

The Nintendo Japan amiibo listing lists compatibility for every amiibo that exists aside from the Mii Fighters. This includes Pokémon which previously haven't had support outside of simple amiibo unlocks, Chibi Robo and some of the Animal Crossing cards

As hinted at Treehouse Live, it's now also confirmed you can get the amiibo costumes without the amiibo by doing the 100 Mario Challenge

Just for clarification for those not in the know

Nope. Mystery (?) Mushroom is only available in the SMB theme. It changes to other theme exclusive items when you switch:
SMB: ? Mushroom
SMB3: Leaf
SMW: Feather
NSMBU: Propeller Mushroom.

Don't forget that we know at least two are Isabelle. There's an image from Treehouse Live which has Isabelle in her Autumn clothing (brown jumper) in addition to the one with the green jumper seen in this image.

Saving you the trouble of doing the in-game requirements to do them? Say you wanna use Captain Falcon from the get-go, just scan the amiibo and BAM hello Super Captain Bros.

It's funny though, I have several amiibo myself and yet will refuse to use 'em because I wanna unlock things myself. I wanna feel like I've -earned- the right to play Mario using Little Mac!

If the other "original" 8 bit sprites are anything to go by, they'll probably base them upon Pokémon's 8 bit sprites, such as the Pikachu that follows you in Yellow.

We knew they were unlockable without amiibo already. The Pokemon stuff is new AFAIK though.

Kinda Funny Games did a lets play at Nintendo and the Nintendo staff confirmed you don't need Amiibo to unlock the characters. They didn't confirm all the ways to unlock them though.

Yeah it's basically like the "time saver" microtransactions (except you get a cool figurine too). I don't mind those since nothing is locked oit of the game.
