Final Fantasy XII (PS2) is still a gorgeous game

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but try playing this on an HD TV. The aliasing is an out of control mess and personally it looks way worse than I remembered. The style is great but man could it use an HD facelift.

I keep wanting to replay this whenever I see a topic about FFXII or the possibility of a HD remaster, but I want to hold off until the remaster so I can get the IZJS extras as well. Plus it saves me getting my PS2 out.

I think what I love about the game so much is that it is a world first and a vehicle to drive a plot second.

This right here, so much. This is what usually attracts me to IP's, and what has me really sink in and become a fan of them. I knew the moment I started playing it, the world was the star, not the plot or the cast. <3

It's probably why I am also disproportionately obsessed with the output of landscape/world/architechture/creature/vehicle/bestiary/background artists from the gaming and anime industry...

Although I really love Uematsu FF OST's, this game's OST was something really special. Because of the absence of random battles that broke the shorter music tracks that would play in earlier FF's the music for this game could be more complex and longer because it wouldn't get interrupted by a random battle resulting in pretty amazing and moody tracks.

I really loved this one:

You're not wrong. I even have an XRGB mini and there's only so much it can do. I love old game graphics but this was just on the cusp of the HD transition, and it yearns to be in a higher res than it is. Can't wait for the inevitable remaster.

FFXII actually looks better with the regular AV cables on an HDTV than it does with component cables. So, if your tv has the red, yellow, white inputs, use that instead of component.

I like the idea of it, but the execution is way too slow in most cases. The fast forward button in IZJS fixes that problem, at least.
It's pretty fast if you set the battle speed to max and switch to active mode. If anything, it's much faster than it's predecessors since you aren't stopped every 10 seconds to participate in a random battle.

Too MMO-ey for me. Useless summons. I never tried the Zodiac Job System version so I'm not really sure it fixes anything.

IZJS fixes a lot. Jobs to diversify characters, fast forward, and other stuff. Might be worth checking out a change list.

The general gameflow just feels slow to me, even with those settings. Maybe movement speed also has something to do with it. I just don't like watching my characters hack away at an enemy when I'm not making any inputs. In most games where scenarios are "simulated", you can skip ahead to the end.

FF12 is on the cusp of greatness for me, and while I haven't played IZJS, the changes I've read about would probably put it over the edge.

Yeah, I hope IZJS comes over here via an HD remaster. It seems like it improves the game so much.

Also, if you feel like you aren't in control most of the time, you should turn off gambits for your party leader. I've done that since day 1 of playing the game, and it's my favorite way to play. It might not be a major change, since you're still going to be watching your character do the actions you select for him, but it gives you more control in battles than just setting gambits and holding down the analog stick.

Interesting to me that so many people are so fond of the soundtrack. Sakimoto has always left me cold. I don't actively dislike his stuff, and it can be nicely atmospheric, but often it sounds like elevator music. I can remember some of the themes from XII quite well, but they don't really evoke the spirit of their respective locations in my mind

TGS, believe.

I've always been really sad that IZJS has that bullshit "strong game" that starts you at LV90 instead of a real new game+ like FFX-2's (resetting your level but letting you keep your abilities and equipment). And maybe FF3j style job switching. That'd take something already incredible and make it perfect and infinitely replayable.

The HD remake is gonna be glorious....right, guys?

T_T

I would do filthy, nasty things for a HD remake of Final Fantasy 12. It's my second favorite main line Final Fantasy.

It's final Fantasy for grown folks.

Edit: Also fuck turn based random encounters. FF12 gambit system and open battle fields have spoiled me.

I've been sorely tempted to just emulate IZJS, but I know that the moment I finish they'll announce the HD port and I will cry bitter tears of regret. =(

This is why you play it using pcsx2 and render it at 4x->8x the original resolution. Even on regular SDTV the aliasing in the game was out of control.

I am going to have pop this game back in and look at. I played it a long time ago and don't remember looking like the OP pics. I don't recall it looking that good but I may be confusing it with other titles at this point.

I don't care about an HD release. So far they have not been that impressive. A good story and combat system is all I really care about. What I do WANT is a digital release of the game. Just would like to not have to worry about some scratch on a DVD. Don't care if its Vita or PS3 or PC. I pray they don't put it on PS NOW or whatever that stream service is called.

I got through like 2/3 of this for the first time on my PS3 just before it got the YLOD. Now I don't know whether to hold out for an HD IZJS version or just give in and restart it on an emulator. The indecision is killing me.

This was the first FF game I played for more than an hour or two. I remember first booting the game and watching the opening scene. My parents couldn't tell that what they were seeing was CG!

I don't remember much of the gameplay, but I do remember being absolutely happy just exploring the world.

Honestly wouldnt mind a HD remaster (or remake) The designs for the world is amazing-along with the OSTs. Wasn't really fond of the gambit and battle system after playing FFX but would like to give it another shot.

lol this game looked horrible when I tried it recently even though I thought it was great back when I first played it near release

the actual assets are great - its the engine thats bad. NPC faces look quite decent but only when they are super super close to the camera (presumably optimised for engine limitations)

Game could be great as a remaster as the actual architecture looks great, some cool monster designs, combat system is quite innovative. Some beautiful locations and music, def would buy remaster even full price if good

I hope they do an HD remake of 12 because those pics are gorgeous and 12 is literally the only ff game I never played

Yeah I re-played it a few years ago and boy, it feels heavy. The dungeons are also ridiculously long.
I love giruvegan as a location, but fuck me if that dungeon isn't stupid long. Same goes for that damn tower on the island.

Gosh I forgot how long some of those dungeons are like Giruvegan with very few save points seems like there is no quick way to leave that place. I lost a lot of levels in this game with some unfortunate party wipe outs. :(

Yeah, and being stuck there for so long was brutal. Inside the crystal, too, I got turned around in circles and so lost... Oof. Not a great experience at all.

Every time this thread bumps, I think, 'why go into it? There won't be anything there.' But I do open the thread, because hope springs eternal.

YEEEEES. Come to me, remaster, come to me. I'll buy any and all versions.
