I will really never ever be able to understand what the genre "rogue like" encompasses..

All these games seem to be completely different from another..

To me it generally means, procedural generation, some kind of persistent upgrade system, and the forced nature of returning to the beginning once you die.

Just from playing the first couple of missions (including one dumb death), it seems It's a bit more roguelike than Rogue Legacy (you can't die your way to upgrades the way you can in RL) but less roguelike than Binding of Isaac (you can't really screw yourself over or find yourself in a completely unwinnable situation the way you can in BoI).

Hmmm........interesting, the comparison didn't spring to mind when playing it, but thinking about it..........possibly.

Control system is very Asteroids, so mash that up with a bit of Defender and Sinistar, a smattering of (insert name of Rogue-a-like), and a soupcon of bullet hell, and you're about there.
Nice thanks for the response. I truly cannot wait to get home and check it out. I loved Asteroids. I also loved Defender. I really sucked at the latter, and got decent enough at the former I suppose, but I loved the challenge of both.

Yeah, I mean, this is almost as targeted to me, specifically, as that cel-shaded transformers brawler from platinum, so while I'd give it a 9, easily, I can see a lot of 7-8 reviews based on difficulty, accessibility, etc.

Are people finding it difficult? This has to be the easiest game with either "roguelike" or "space shooter" in the description, much less both. Took me until 2-5 to die and only because of double hits from the boss. Unless it gets way harder. Just take your time and normal combat should not be risky. I also still disagree with "roguelike" in this case.

Gradius is difficult. This game just requires you to not do stupid things too frequently.

20 mins until reviews show up. Very curious to see how it goes over. Sounds like a high quality game, but the controls & difficulty might turn some people off.

Interested in seeing this. Played it a year ago or so, thought the controls might turn some people off.

Either way, I'm excited to play it tonight once I get home.

The only reason I even got hit in the first season was because I got super aggressive. And that one time I drifted into a red spiky plant.

Looking forward to the Mech and a little more difficulty.

8 from Gamespot.
Solid score there:
But in the end, Galak-Z is about learning as you go, and making the best of what you have. It's a layered, complex system, and even now, 20 hours after I started it, there are upgrades I haven't found, techniques I haven't practiced, and possibilities I haven't considered. Galak-Z pummelled me, knocked me to the ground and kicked me when I was down. But when I finally got the upper hand, and beat the final season with only a sliver of health left, the victory was all the more rewarding.
The Good
  • A complex, nuanced approach to movement, combat and strategy
  • A risk/reward system creates tense moments throughout every playthrough
  • A plethora of upgrades create new ways to consider dogfights
  • Failure is always a learning experience
The Bad
  • Rare stutters during larger explosions
  • Controls have the tendency to feel overly complex before the learning curve is mounted

It is on Steam. Apparently not on PS4 though. Very frustrating.

Console is not PC, steam doesn't require ratings or, to my knowledge, certification

Four times starting the game now and I can't even reach the main menu. Fuck

You have the patch? Never had that issue even before the patch though...only started the game two times though (thanks, suspend/resume!)

I am still salty I went to (greatly consider, finger on button close) purchase it, last night, only to miss out on the pre-order discount 7 minutes before midnight EST. :(

Deleted and redownloading. Hopefully that fixes it. Will report in about an hour and a half once the game and patch are installed.

It ramps up quickly by the end of Season 2. I was wishing for more difficulty as well, and then I hit 2-5. Here come the large sword mechs with 30+ hit points, a big-ass shield, and a faster boost than yours. Oh, you can handle 1? Well here's 3 along with some support frigates.....have fun!

My first death ;_;

Well ideally regions should basically be dead, just adjust currency, I don't think that will happen unless they decide to drop ratings entirely which I'm not sure they will/can since they have physical presence in nations unlike Steam.

The multi-cert is stupid for sure though

That level was pretty fun, I don't appreciate the boss being able to combo you though, not in a game where you have 6 hit points and each hit does 2 damage. Two hits can be fatal, or one hit if you took damage before the boss. Took two respawns to kill him but I did.

Also the way the grab screws with your movement is extremely unpleasant mid-boss fight.

I keep trying to add the reviews to my OP, and this keeps happening. Anyone able to help?

Only see the one review (Gamespot 8/10). I guess the review codes went out late and everyone's scrambling to finish the game.

I really didn't like Luftrausers, but this looks drastically better and I like the whole faux-anime Robotech thing it's got going on. Will definitely have to try it sometime.

Review copies were out sunday, game was pre-release quality until monday, hard to review in time. Only having my free time to play it, I certainly didn't have enough time, though it's not super long (that I can tell) so I'm a bit surprised more press seemingly didn't finish it.

What didn't you like about Luftrausers? Though Galak-Z is a lot more mechanically dense and varied than Luft was, they do share some common underpinnings with the way inertia affects movement.

I hated having to constantly fight gravity and not being able to dodge well due to the inertia system. And I especially hated that airship that stopped me from being able to progress. Also, I dislike the camera (mediocre frame rate plus lots of shaking).

Luftrausers is awesome. I loved the little details like shooting slowing you down.

Not that hyped though for this game, missed the pre-order discount as well

Well the inertia part is definitely in this, but the speed of movement and dodging is much faster. No screen shake or having to fight gravity. The combat is quite a bit more tactical, with more options on how you approach, disengage or avoid fights. The stealth in this game is surprisingly engaging and effective.

Framerate is fairly consistent, but it does bog down a bit in really heavy firefights (nothing anywhere as bad as I remember happening in Luftrausers though).

Died once during Season 1 and then breezed through it. Loving this game so far, hope it gets more difficult in Season 2!

So far, my least favorite part about this game is the sound design. I can't even tell if there's any music during gameplay, most of the sounds seem kind of muffled, and the combat dialogue, gets old really, really fast.

"Ka-ching!"
"Money in the bank!"
"My shields are blown!"
"My shields are blown!"
"My shields are blown!"
"Money in the bank!"
