Sony's outdated Trophy policies are affecting achievement parity with other platforms

There is no rule. You decide (as a dev) whether your game should have a small trophy set or large trophy set, and can use a number of different "guides" in determining which route to go. But it's not forced nor is it decided by anyone other than the devs.

Given this is done by higher ups, they may have accidentally thought their game was a smaller one and ended up with the smaller trophy package.

Thanks for the clarification. This explains a lot

The examples you provide sounds more like a developer/publisher either not knowing/caring about getting trophy/achievement parity. The Yu-Gi-Oh trophies all being bronze have to be just out of spite than anything else.

I wish MGS V Ground Zeroes was getting a Platinum though -- it would look nice with a full PS3/PS4 set of Platinums for MGS series.

Speaking of Mega Man, I'm surprised that Mega Man 10 doesn't have a Platinum, just for Mr. Perfect trophy alone.

Agreed. This was particularly annoying with $15 PSN releases las gen. Some games you could get almost all achievements in 30 mins, there was no challenge.

Thank you for the insight.

The problem with Sony now is since they're the market leader they don't seem to really feel the need to react as much as MS.
There's a whole lot of stuff that should be improved with the PS4 like the poor quality of the controller, online only trophy list, no playing from external hd support and so on, but nothing has been done.

As like 99% of the time, "vote with your wallet" sends absolutely no relevant message here and you're better off just stating your demand. Buying a game on Xbox tells no party whatsoever that you wanted a platinum.

Well complaining while continuing to give them your money doesn't send any message at all. Your complaints fall on deaf ears until it impacts their bottom line.

As a Sony fan and owner of a PS4, I definitely feel that Microsoft's system is better. Every game deserves a platinum trophy. Can't believe Galak-Z has like 11 trophies and no plat...

How did you ever play games before achievements? Yes, they're there now so having a better system is better than a bad one, but damn. People used to play games to play games. If a meaningless trophy list is what gets you excited about a game, there's something wrong.

This is interesting, and goes against what FuturLab said a few years ago:

Velocity 2X will include a Platinum Trophy
by James @ FuturLab on January 30, 2014 in Game Design, PS Vita, PS4, Tease, Velocity 2X

In case there was any doubt, Velocity 2X will feature a Platinum Trophy, confirmed today by Sony. We haven’t thought of a name for it yet. Perhaps you could suggest one in the comments. Good luck trying to top ‘Show Thumb Respect’ :p

Three cheers for Ben Andac for putting together its case within Sony, and a retrospective thanks to Lorenzo Grimaldi who managed to secure the Platinum for Velocity Ultra =)

They had to have people within Sony appeal for the Platinum.

That sounds like opinion?
Where's the proof?

Edit: looks like Chubigans settled it.
It's a dev issue.

I agree OP. With all of the improvements Sony has made, for some reason Trophies seem to be behind in terms of progress. A game is a game and the idea that only certain ones qualify for a platinum trophy is behind the times.

Even with different packages apparently at this point platinum should be the standard.

Freedom of speech.

Then how about reading the OP.
If you don't care about trophies/achievements, know that I truly respect your opinion (I even partially agree), but please consider not participating in this thread. Or, at the very least, please try to contribute more than a simple "Who cares?" :)

Or is that to difficult for you?
:(((

I find the lack of support for couch co-operative trophies to be another issue which displays lack of parity.

My wife and I played lots of games together on 360 and we both unlocked achievements, but on PS3 and now continuing on PS4, only the first player gets trophies in most games we play. It is needlessly annoying to have this only work on a game by game basis with PS4 given how it always worked on 360.

CSD2 with a platinum trophy maybe ;)

I don't understand the big deal about trophy's/achievements. Do they do something, if you get alot of them?

I don't get how people don't get this at this point.

Games themselves have increasingly become very completionist-centric. Trophies are just another fun way to scratch that itch. People were 100 percenting games before just for fun, this just gives them a universal checklist for their library and in the case of Trophies in particular, you get to see your level go up.

It's just satisfying.

I'm not going to avoid buying a game without a platinum, but it is pretty disappointing when games don't have one. Especially with digital games moving into the $19.99 bracket; I was surprised when I saw Galak-Z didn't have one.

Is your wife logged into her account on PS4? Nearly every game I've played co-op has earned trophies for both players, even when the other player was set to Guest.

Achievement / trophy spam is super annoying so I am ok with this. If anything I just with Sony was clear on what games get full lists versus smaller lists since its super scatershot right now.

Some downloadable games give you one for every little action. So dumb.

Who gives a shit?

read the OP and edit your post because it makes you look stupid as it is.

I never really went after trophies except for the games I really liked so I never noticed that. It seems weird now that you point it out and, yeah, it must be annoying if you like trophies

It better if it's just a matter of choice.

That's where I sit with it. I'm not here dying over this, but i'll call it out.

Wasn't really aware of this until I read the (fantastic) OP. 100% agree

This really bothered me with Resident Evil 4 HD on PS3/360. 1000 points on 360 and only a few bronze trophies on PS3. I wanted a platinum in one of the best games of all time!

Achievement parity whinging...

Who cares about trophies and achievements THAT much?

People that don't read OP's and reply based on a thread title are the worst thing about GAF. The OP specifically aimed the topic at people that do care, and even bothered to include a 'TL:DR'.

Sorry, I just never payed attention to things like that. I guess it can be fulfilling to know that you've done everything.

I do agree with this to some point. I enjoy collecting trophies when I have time to play, and would like to see more smaller titles include the platinum, or at least, more than 1 gold trophy.

I got grudge sucked!
The OP does, and bunch of other people in the thread. If you don't care, then why are you even in this thread?

This needs to be posted a million times in most threads. I'm not a huge trophy/achievement fan myself but I know lots of people who do, one of my friends loves trophy hunting. Why shit up a thread about something you don't care about? Find one you do care about and post there instead.

Quick related question. Outside of the number and type of trophy awarded, are most trophies pretty much analogous to their Xbox achievement counterparts, or do developers have to put in something different on the Sony version?

For games released simultaneously, achievement and trophy lists usually have the same number (+1 platinum for PS) and the same requirements.

They could discontinue trophies and I wouldn't care. I get that they're neat/useful/important for a lot of people, but there's other PSN stuff I'd want improved first.

Well, I'm with Chubigans on this one. I've made trophy pack files, and it's as easy as flipping a switch from a plat game or a non-plat game.

I'm sure the devs wanted to, they can have their games have a platinum and Sony won't object.

The thing is that trophy bugs can easily fail your game at certification. If I had a choice with my games, I would make as few trophies as possible, and that's why Sony is giving the choice.

Yeah, not everyone cares about it obviously. But it's fun for me to do things like set out to get all the platinums in a series like GoW and watch my level go up. The fact that there are different values for the different kinds of trophies with the platinum being the highest value makes it even better. I even platinumed Ascension which I kind of hated a lot of the time.

I stopped caring about achievements years ago honestly after my score started to get to a certain point, Trophies were designed with a smaller overall value so it's much easier for me to feel like I am making progress.

y'all should be ashamed

I do remember hearing about having to "fight" for your chance at a Platinum back in the day, but it's definitely not like that anymore.

Yeah I can see the Mega Man managers who are in charge of the cert account ticking off the "smaller game" box and thereby restricting their options for trophies as a result.

Sony has that problem of not communicating for a long period of time, then suddenly burst forth with a ton of info that addresses most complaints but pass over a couple minor requests.

Becomes pretty annoying.

I'm not sure how Sony does their trophies.

Some small indie games have platinums. Rogue Legacy, Sound Shapes, Resogun, Geometry Wars 3, N++ to name a couple.

Then games like Galak Z which is hard as balls doesn't have one.
