Sega reskins Puyo Puyo Quest for western launch

Via Sega Bits it's now Cranky Food Friends and contains no trace of puyo. Softlaunched in the usual Canada/etc regions. The author is oblivious to this issue but the comments found it out and compare screenshots:

I hope no one is holding their breath for Puyo Puyo Tetris to come over.

Can someone please give me a rundown on why Puyo Puyo games don't come outside of Japan? I'd really love to play one to if there is one, or even a clone, readily available.

Are they trying to cash in on the fall of Candy Crush Saga?

Non the less I can finally play dat Puyo Puyo Quest even though I suck more in Puyo Puyo than Tetris :V

It's like the most cynical Angry Birds X Candy Crush Saga -- they're trying to make this game actually appeal to westerners, since nobody knows what Puyo Puyo is here.

I really doubt its licensing since Sega owns Puyo Puyo outright.

I believe Kirby's Avalanche is on Wii virtual console, it and Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine are heavily localized ports of a puyo puyo game. I'm not sure Sega's problem with it. Compile used to own the rights but Sega has owned it fully for years to the best of my knowledge and I don't know if anyone but Sega could be responsible for it.

Sega isn't exactly known for their sensible localizations, but with the Miku stuff doing well I Thought maybe they'd changed. Apparently not.

That's pretty odd, I'll give Kirby's Avalanche a go and see if I like it. Although I kinda hope I don't considering it's localisation issues :S

Mean Bean Machine is on Wii virtual console and is sorta better; the music's better and the Genesis version of Puyo Puyo was better than the SNES one anyway.

Better still just grab the Arcade version of Puyo Puyo Tsu on virtual console.

This seems to me like a consequence of the mobile audience. I doubt the players who they want to attract here would flock to or appreciate the Puyo Puyo design.

I find it really hard to believe that your average bored 'Merican would respond super well to cute food and super negatively to cute slimes

That may be true, but I still don't want future Sega games to be reskinned so heavily to be "more acceptable to English audiences".

I can imagine a statement like. We removed the puyo puyo characters because you don't know who these are and we don't want to pay international voice rights or do dubbing. Instead we've left you with...something worse than Adventures of Sonic cartoon characters. If they had just thrown Sonic Boom into this it could take the crown of best Sonic Boom game.

An amusing part of Kirby's Avalanche is you can taste the forced Western Edge in the dialog that is completely out of character:
The only game where Kirby talks.

Why? People assume it is the characters and having a guy called Satan (localised as Dark Prince). I would think these days it is just the puzzle market in the west is terrible and it seems to be one of those cult followings in Japan still.

Typically one game a decade slips through. 90s. SNES and Mega Drive versions of Puyo Puyo 1 (why it couldn't be Puyo Puyo 2...) coming out as Kirby and Dr. Robotnik games. 2000s was better GBA Puyo Puyo game came out as did the N-gage (lol) Puyo Puyo game and Puyo Puyo Fever (with a mostly new cast) too.

If you want one now you either import Puyo Puyo Tetris on region free console (i.e. not Wii U and not really 3DS) or there is a Puyo Puyo game inside the 3DS Project Mirai Hatsume Miku game. I'll leave the thread with the simple fact that a Hatsume Miku game is only western release of Puyo Puyo this decade...

Puyo is a thing in Japan but not here. it's also quite Japanese. I think angry food is more relatable to the avarage casual gamer and SEGA thought the same.

now if they released a reskinned Puyo Tetris for consoles, that would be absurd

I like Puyo Puyo, but all they need are the cute blobs - I've found the anime style of more recent titles too childish. I know it's always had anime girls or whatever, but they looked chibi, they seemed to take it in a direction that looks like it's aimed at young children. I can see why they'd give it a make-over for western release, but I don't see any problem with the name or the blob characters.

No more cutesy than say candy crush or any of that ilk, it's lame but expected...

Puyo Puyo in it's raw form would fit fine among the rest of the cutsey puzzlers out there on mobile.
