tbqh this is a best case scenario, the homeless crusty dudes with guitars aren't half as bad as the pushy tour operators or the dudes in unlicensed mascot costumes trying to get you to pose (or fighting each other)

Stonehenge actually does look like it looks in the pictures. I'm not sure what the imgur album's point is at all. Of course you can see the nearest road, it's open hilly stereotypical English terrain.

Yeah, I don't get the Santorini one either. "Did you know if you went to the other side of the island from where Santorini is it doesn't look like Santorini anymore?!"

Most of the pictures are actually quite cool. L'Arc de Triomphe for instance looks even better in the zoomed out photo.

What a stupid gallery.

omg human civilisation you guys like whoa makes you think huh

Stonehenge looks great up close, don't know that dumb gallery's purpose other than omg wait people travel to tourist locations?!

It's like someone just found these pictures and has never been to the actual locations so somehow thinks that all the wonder is lost.

Yeah that place is a dump but tourists still love to go.

I'd put the Santa Monica pier and Venice beach in the same boat. BOth of them are dumpy, trashy tourist traps.

Fucking Santa Monica pier is depressing. Nothing particularly interesting to do and super trashy. Water doesn't even look nice. Tourists beware!

3rd Street Promenade is aiight. Tender Greens is a great place to eat - it's around there somewhere.

The Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. We've seen it hundreds of times im sure. Looks beautiful and that look out spot is great. Except this tourist spot doesn't look like that. Step back a couple of feet and this is what you actually see.

The top and bottom pics are from google, middle is my own. So the top pic shows you looking to the right of the bridge, theres a tiny fence, falling over and then the sheer drop. The middle pic is the rest of the fence with caution tape on it. Thats basically where you'd stand to take the very top pic in this post. To the left is even even more chain link fencing, all with holes in it and falling down. You never see this in the beautiful pictures but its right there just outside of camera shot. Behind the camera is the bottom picture with a concrete building covered in graffiti and railings.

Its a shame, it could have a nice little cafe there, theres certainly enough tourists going up there to take pictures for a while and could be a beautiful look out. As it is, it shatters the beauty a bit by not being looked after.

Hopefully people here will post there own examples, theres some beautiful places out there, which when you visit them are not as beautiful as they looked in films and photos.

Um, you do know that the land due to erosion is in danger of collapsing? That's why it's cordoned off. there have been a few deaths of people climbing over the fence to take pics and stuff and falling.

You think of this right? Surrounded by desert, exotic, far away from anything. It's not about it being a 'shitty perspective' as another poster said. But the reality of what these places look like isn't the same as what the photos portray..

I mean, honestly I think of both.

I just went there with my kids a few months ago and loved it. Trashy looking but fun.

Promenade is nice and shiny though.

I don't have the time and money to visit every major landmark in the world.

I don't understand the shitposting in this thread. The premise here is quite clear. Sometimes it's just interesting to see these locations from a different perspective than the standard postcard motive you're so used to.

Lol. This one I can actually vouch for. Goddamn that room is so crowded with shitty picture-taking tourists. WTF is the point of snapping a cell phone pic of the Mona Lisa? Just admire the fact that you're seeing it with your own eyes, and if later on you wanna remember what it looked like, just Google it...

When I visited, I made a point to shoulder my way to the dead center of the display, spread my arms over the wooden barrier, and just stared at it for a long fucking time. I ruined many a selfie that day, and it felt wonderful. Even the security guard by the display gave a smirk.

Fuck these picture taking imbeciles.

Venice, Italy.

Very tiny and more graffiti than I expected.

And awesome. Venice was the best place we visited on our holiday, compared to Rome and Florence which got repetitive. Travelling everywhere by boat, water everywhere. Wasn't expecting a halal kebab shop to be right next to our hotel.

I get your point, OP, but...get over it. So you thought famous landmarks were all quarantined for miles in every direction? Or that they dominated the landscape where they are? Well, now you know they're not. Life goes on.

...I'll admit I was a bit taken aback at how small, relative to the mountains around it, Mount Rushmore turned out to be when I went there. But once you get up close, it's still massive and impressive.

Yep, this what I initially thought of. I knew that it was going to be miserable to see in person due to the crowds, but thanks to the anti-theft measures and the paintings' actual small size, it's pointless to see the Mona Lisa in person.

Not like the Louvre is lacking for amazing art covering every other wall, though.

I might try the same when I go. Someone's gotta defend the world from people who take pictures.

When I visited Chania I was expecting, well, what you normally expect from going to Greece. What I got was dead rats in the streets, every street corner full of open smelly trash bags, beach had cockroaches crawling around etc.

That does seem rather random lol.

Was the food any good?

I live in the Niagara Region. Whenever tv/movies show Niagara Falls, this is what you see:

When in reality, it is much more like this:

No it doesn't. I was there earlier this summer. Looks much more iconic from the other side. This is my pic:

That's the side I saw it from, too. Was cool to find out how they would use the stage with different environments, how that stuff had to be brought up from underground.

Okay I only briefly passed by as I got into the city. I'll check it out tomorrow. Most of the city does smell of piss though. Guess a lot of major cities have that in common.
