Are Millennials really the next "Great Generation"?

For those that don't know Millennials are anyone born between the early 1980s and late 1990s.

Initially millennials were viewed (much like generation x) in a very negative light by older generations. But, as we have aged, Millennials have begun to be regarded as possibly the next "Great Generation" by some researchers.

Generations are generally defined by common traits both positive and negative. Millennials fall into the following:

Positive:
Exponentially less religious
Idealists that want to change the world
Logically more open to change
More likely chase their passions
Believe that work should align with their life and not be a detriment to it
Risk takers
Most Diverse generation (currently)
Value community, family and creativity over work
More educated
more open to social reform

Negative:
Entitlement complex
Narcissists (rise of facebook and selfies)
Techno-dependent
Expect to be paid higher wages (raises) just for working (not for doing better work, linked with entitlement).
Massively in debt (mostly due to prior generations kicking the can down the road so to speak but some is due to a general misunderstanding of finances which has come about due to how terribly our schools teach or don't teach finance ).

Of coarse Millennials also think IGen or Generation I (current generation) to be complete wastes of life but maybe they will actually be the next "Greatest Generation" and Millennials will be another "Silent Generation". It is thought that generations are cyclic in nature after all.

What say you GAF?

edit: meant to add this to the op.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
I'm too busy hating on Gen Z (Fucking punks) to be concerned about my generation.

Also Baby Boomers, fuck them too. Gen X you guys are chill though.

I'd say growing up in the shadow of recession has not made millennials risk takers.

I hate all this generational stuff, why can't people just be people? We never talked about generation this or generation that before the depression. I feel like the boomers just felt shitty that their parents were so much better than they were and did this as a result.

I'll go out on a limb and predict that some millennials will be amazing people who change the world, and some will be shitty jerks.

How exactly do you define diversity of a generation? Is this worldwide or just limited to one country [USA] because that drastically changes what diversity means?

Haha, there might be some truth to this. :p

I think the generational gap has risen as technology and society began to evolve at such a fast rate. I know I felt very removed from my parent's view of the world, the same way they likely did from theirs. I assume that's always been the case to an extent, but it's exponentially so these days.

When are we going to stop ascribing personality traits to groups of people born during the same period of time and under wildly varying circumstances?

It's like reading the horoscope, FFS.

The "entitlement complex" stuff is bullshit posed by the baby boomers.

Depends on where you're from maybe. Where I'm from? It's real.

It's not like that's exclusive to this generation, I think it's just compounded exponentially because of the access to social media and all sorts of gadgets and things that didn't exist prior to make it as obvious.

I feel like the iGen literally has all of the negatives on that list except 20x worse and way less of the positives.

I really feel that way too, but I'm a hater. Plus, they're just so fucking full of themselves it's sickening. Fuck the kids, fuck the old people, fuck everyone.

I haven't heard anybody consider millenials the next "great generation." Anything said about millenials, positive or negative, is probably hyperbolic and not even accurate anyway.

Positive:
Exponentially less religious
Idealists that want to change the world
Logically more open to change
More likely chase their passions
Believe that work should align with their life and not be a detriment to it
Risk takers
Most Diverse generation (currently)

Almost every item in this list describes baby boomers when they were age 16 - 21 and known as the drop out generation, or whatever people may have called them

I also disagree that a generation is more or less open to change than any other... and question what "logically open to change" means.

I graduated immediately into the recession. I've had to build my own business to have any chance of a future. A lot of the older people before me don't give a fuck and have no ambition.
Coming out swinging is one reaction to it, but another common reaction is staying at home with mom and dad, staying in school longer than needed, and just in general being sluggish about career ambition because the jobs are just not there.

I think it really put the brakes on this generation more than set a fire under their ass. I applaud your reaction to it, though.

LOL Narcissism?

If anything, millenials seem to be suffering from horrible self-esteem thanks to the lack of work opportunities and massive debt. But that would be an unfair judgement that is US-centric, plus plenty of "millennials" were already working adults before the economic crisis.

Generation psychoanalyzing is laughable posturing.

I've had a long suspicion that "entitlement" is more based on money/status location. If you don't mind me asking, do you live around affluent people?

Millenials are also The most intolerant of religions and intolerant to the extreme of ideas a certain region does not agree with and false Knights which makes them potentially the ww3 generation

Nah, there's a famous quote from Plato or someone like that complaining about the younger generation.

As a millennial I feel like my generation sucks. Especially from all the articles I read saying how much we suck. I rarely if ever read good things about my kind. Entitlement is rampant with this generation as well. There is this very annoying thing where people wait for you to make a mistake just so that they can tear you down intellectually. There is a fear of being "wrong" or just incorrect about something.

What blows my mind is all the instant gratification a whole generation will only know. From movies to tv to books to IMs and email.

I find it sad that like kids today will never know the joy of Saturday morning cartoons.

I asked my young nephew how he spent his Saturday mornings and he said he sleeps then get you and watches youtube and cruises the net.
