When did nerds become really shitty people?

When the internet allowed them to express their worst impulses without consequences.

I daresay the vast majority of shitty internet behaviour would never happen if the perpetrators were forced to do it face-to-face.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
For me it's the opposite. If someone told me 15 years ago that not only would I get to see all my favorite comic books on the big screen, but I would hate it, I would never believe them. They've taken things that a niche market supported and then turned around made it for the masses all the while alienating the original fans. All of this new comic book media is not made with the original fan base in mind.Same goes for video games, they're just not being made for the same audience anymore. These things aren't niche anymore, people that enjoy these things today aren't nerds.

This sums it up pretty well, everyone that used to mock them for liking those things are now enjoying bastardized versions of those very same things. Cultural appropriation, I tells ya.

I don't know if there was every a point in my life when there weren't some asshole nerds. But then, I was an ugly girl intruding on their hobby.

Trust me. It happens to pretty girls too. Look at the flack Olivia Munn or Felicia Day get.

Being a "nerd" is now pretty damn popular, and pretty much has been for quite some time now. So what you're noticing is how most people typically act when they fail to maintain a sense of respect and humility when dealing with other people. They see any kind of perception of elevated status as an excuse to berate and look down on others.

These people, you don't call them "nerds," just call them assholes, which makes them the same as all the other assholes who aren't "nerds." :)

Nerd hobbies/media are constantly alienating the "original" fans. See all of DC's reboots.

Didn't mean to say that it didn't, just pointing to the hypocrisy of nerds who complain about other groups being shallow. :p There's no winning as a female nerd.

I think that has more to do with them not being very good actresses.

It depends on how much of a deviation has taken place, but comic books have always tried to reach new fans throughout the years.Sometimes it is for the sake of fixing problems in the universe.I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never felt a reboot was done to water down the material to reach the masses.

Do you have the stats to back up what you've noticed, or just a bunch of useless anecdotes based off the fact that behaviour is now more visible?

From what I can tell, controversial topics draw more attention, and that simply makes those controversial issues more visible and sustained.

Just natural social dynamics at work.

#NotAllNerds
Done. Also people are and can be annoying brats. Good people exist in the mountain of dirt though. Good hipsters, bad hipsters, good goths, bad goths, etc.

Well my two cents are a good number of people are assholes no matter what category they fit into. Toss internet anonymity and the echo chamber effect on top of that and you can get some pretty vile stuff.

January Jones doesn't get her address published on forums and comments on blog articles for just stating an uncontroversial opinion.

Who did that happened to?

This is mad disingenuous.

How so?, I haven't seen much of Munn's acting, but I've seen some and it wasn't very good.I also didn't like her too much on that one show she used to be on G4.I've seen more from Day, and it's about the same.

There was this guy who went to the same college as me. A year or 2 younger I believe and not someone I really knew but he just looked like the quiet, shy type, nerdy type person to me. Guess I was wrong after having him as an facebook friend many years now after college. A lot of the posts he makes online are either about anime girls, cosplaying girls or some anime figure with a suggestive pose, and nearly 90% of the content of his posts are full of capital letter screams and curse words. Probably to get attention or something, but he seems to have a ton of other friends who share the same hobbies and are ok with what he posts.

I don't know what the deal is with that, be it does become irritating sometimes (I don't unfriend people so yeah, I just try to scroll past his posts) and I have seen a lot of other nerds into anime who talk the same way online. Is this what they call trying to be edgy?

To some, this explains it a bit, replace gamers with nerds.
hC3xXMw.jpg

Again, to some, not all.

This sounds like the gaming section of neogaf

Me and my nerdy friends still just talk about comics, TV shows, science. Never any of this hating women stuff. I guess people in general are shitty, not just nerds.

Persnickety people often use 'discrimination' or particularness to try to control their anxieties and postpone or elect out of action that might make them vulnerable to criticism, and then it's just a short jump to a sort of defeated aggression that sees taking a critical slant as a way 'out' of situations that make them uncomfortable. Basically I think people with nerdy interests often use them as a sort of oasis, to postpone developing more successful coping strategies, but oases dry up.

That's certainly how the new 52 reboot felt for me as a fan of the whole Bat family or of the odigital Jaime Reyes. I don't think you can say a lot of the newer movies are so much worse.

I personally never thought I'd see a shared cinematic universe, and while I definitely have my own interpretations of the characters, it's okay if the movies don't always match that. I'm sure there are many fans of the comics who love Nolan Bats for example while I disliked them overall. Doesn't mean the people who do like them aren't nerds or whatever.

I haven't read new 52 so you might be right. With the movies I was talking more about marvel, but liking the movies doesn't make you not a "nerd", but most people that like these movies aren't.I do see where you are coming from though.

What the hell is wrong with nerds today. Jeezus H.... I hung out with "the nerds" in highschool. You know what we talked about? Videogames, robotics, building PCs, anime, movies, debated what next gen console to get (Ps3/360/Wii) in college, and made fun of each others internet speeds. You know what we didnt talk about? Hating women, hating minorities, blaming women for our faults, pcmasterrace, or whatever the fuck is currently going on in the "nerd" sphere. Worst thing people did was pirate videogames.

So what the hell is going on? If anything I would have been THRILLED with all these dumb comic book movies, crazy videogames, and insane tech stuff. Its like nerd heaven. So why the hell is "nerd" culture now this horrible twisted real life 4chan thread.

Seriously though, what happened?

We were always shitty. We're just now coming to recognize some of our uglier traits.

I was never a woman hater though... and I learned life from fucking mIRC. We had female ops. We met, we PARTIED!!! (lan.. :\.,,) but it wasn't as bad as it is now. I feel like those redpillers are all those guys that sorta failed taking rejection and going with it.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I think that "nerd" culture became mainstream so you're going to see some people that go further and more extreme to maintain that identity.

Nerds are not that shitty or maybe have always been shitty, depending on how you look at it. The only difference is that things are becoming more polarized and reactive. The idea that nerds (you may disagree with) are equivalent to 4chan fodder (or nazis or communist or ISIS etc., wherever we want to go with hyperbole) is just a manifestation of that. There are more life or death, increasingly loud slap fights on the internet than there ever were hanging out with your friends. In truth, likely nothing has changed when it comes to hanging out with your friends, unless you got some loud mouthed friends.

nerds didn't just magically become shitty overnight, the seeds of things like GamerGate and MRAs were sewn long ago and have been incubating for years.

LOL, spoken like someone who didn't live through the 70s Marvel TV shows.

I've been what many would call a nerd ever since I got my Atari 2600 when I was 11, first computer was a VIC-20.

Somehow I've managed not to become a whiny pissbaby and am thrilled that what was a niche can be enjoyed by all.

It's not a culture, it's media. If you let media consumption define who you are, then I've got nothing but pity for you.

I honestly think that nerds realized that they hold up all of society and that they are sick and tired of having to appease dumb people who are only interested in exploiting their intelligence. At least that is the vibe / commentary I get from young "nerds" these days. They seem to have little patience for other people and are very secular and or elitist in their ways. However I also think its about maturity, or the lack thereof, also ego / arrogance.

Remember, nerds can't be bullied anymore, so now they are the bullies.

C'mon, most people are not like this lol. I'm in uni in the sciences and hang around engineers/computer science guys mostly, and I can't think of anyone who'd fit your description of "impatient intelligent people".

Honestly, some of the guys in engineering are losers around women and end up being really petty. Their misogyny is the "I'm such a nice guy, why don't women like me?" fedora type. And that's just a minority of people. But those are the kind that get sucked into the whole MRA and GamerGate stuff the OP is talking about.

It should be repeated that most young "nerds" are still normal and forward-thinking. From my experience at least.

Nerds were different in the late 90's when I was in highschool. They were typically socially isolated and awkward because they acted this way (traits OP mentioned), or had these kinds of thoughts. Being into computers, games, etc, was something a lot of people were into and it little to nothing to do with them being popular or not. My friends and I were really popular, some of us were jocks, some not, most of us never showed up for school, but we were nothing like the aggressive "nerds" of today.

I think it probably has everything to do with social media.

I'm pretty sure the blue collar workers hold up all of society so we can even have the surplus to allow for white collared engineers and scientists.

Those aren't nerds, they're just antisocial cunts like all the ones before them. Only in recent times they have access to the Internet which gives vile individuals a conduit with which to transmit their insanity to others (you). It's not a "nerd" thing at all, it's an exploiting technology thing. According to the dated definition of "nerd", basically everyone today qualifies as one. Glued to their computers (phones) and antisocial as fuck.

What you're describing aren't nerds, they're introverted mysogynists masquerading as nerds (via things like GamerGate) to give their beliefs false validity. The Internet can give any angry minority the support they need. We all have roughly the same views on social issues here on GAF because we surround ourselves with like-minded people. Mysogynists, racists and MRA's use technology to a similar effect that we do.

Everyone has always been shitty sense forever to someone. With differing views and opinions, it's impossible for anyone to not be shitty. You, I and everyone on GAF is shitty to someone. It's just the way you perceive these other nerds.

It's disingenuous on two fronts

1. That gamers are harrasing these women based on their "unmerited" success. They harras them because they are sexist pigs who wouldn't dare speak their mind if it wasn't for internet anonymity.
2. That the women are terrible actresses. No one complains about munn's roles in mewsroom and she is getting casted for bigger roles after her work on newsroom so she is clearly doing something right. As for Day, Im not sure of her abilities.

why are we associating MRAs with gamers now?

it's this sort of hyperbolic, reactionary bullshit that the OP is confused about.

you got an extreme group who happens to share an interest with another, and suddenly guilt by association because the magic of social media means that everyone's opinions are given weight regardless of merit.

so OP to end, nerds aren't assholes. PEOPLE are assholes. it's just that Nerds happen to have the skillsets and interest to better manipulate the medium you are using.

it's not that they are exclusively bad, it's just the bad nerds can do a lot more than your average joe mcasshole.

there are normal people who also happen to be nerds. there are sickos who also happen to be nerds. overall no one is one specific thing.

hipbabboom

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
Aren't you being a little too judgmental OP... going around and putting labels on people and whatnot.

Bitch when I was a kid we had NES and blew in cartridges and we fucking liked it!

(I'm kidding of course, but showing the basic reason: some people think newer gamers aren't really gamers and express that in horrid ways)

And echoing others, some people think because high school girls teased them back when they were blowing in cartridges, no girl could ever be actually interested in gaming and thus is faking it for the attention.

I think the internet has allowed a lot of people who would otherwise be lonely and anti-social find some social interaction, yet still lack the proper opportunities or skills to actually interact with other people off the internet. So it turns a lot of what would normally just be self-loathing into something a lot more outwardly nasty.

It's way more broad than nerds OP. Men who feel they have no place in a more gender equal world tend to lash out about things they no longer control or understand.

As an old nerd before it was cool, there were a lot of shitty nerds but they didn't have a platform. Shitty nerds now rule the internet.
