In a curious development, was Professor Layton just leaked for Smash 4 DLC? [Rumor]

what would a costume need dialogue for?

Quick, BY2K, make a thread about this.

One of the forums posters in here, Wii Will Rock You, created a twitter account under the name of Professor Tophat or whatever, and started promoting the character for Smash in a thread here. Then he got banned.

Wow, that came from here? That was before my time here, I think I heard about it on Smashboards or Gamefaqs.

I've always associated Layton with Nintendo, so it's a good fit to me. Like, in my heart, he's a Nintendo IP who... occasionally gets to visit the competition and wet his beak a little bit.

It took me years before I even knew he wasn't a Nintendo IP. His games were always advertised with Nintendo's DS games and the series just "feels" like a Nintendo series.

Also according to Wikipedia, Layton himself hasn't ever appeared on anything but a Nintendo system. Games in his series have, but not the character.

Hey! This could be a repeat of PlayStation All-Stars, where Cole's VA said he just saw Nolan North (Drake) and David Hayter (Snake) in a recording session. Drake and Cole were both in PSASBR, as everyone guessed, but everyone guessed we were getting Snake. Turns out that Snake isn't even acknowledged despite there being Metal Gear characters, and Hayter actually voiced the previously-unvoiced Polygon Man, instead!

Miller just said he's in Smash, not that he's Layton. Maybe he's the new voice of K. Rool?

I'd be down with Layton. He's not my first pic by a long shot, but he'd bring some cool ideas with him and the art style of the Layton series is gorgeous. How long ago was the last proper Layton game though?

As an American, I am offended.
Fine, King K. Rool AND Kaptain K. Rool. Sheesh Alberto, you and your Kremling love.

Obviously not but i'm sure that the amount of how many DLC characters they can add will be coming to an end really soon, and I feel a "joke character"* for a fighting game like Layton is a wasted spot. plus that he is a 3rd party character.

*I'm fully aware that Smash 4 already has a few joke characters (like Villager, WFT) for a fighting game, but none of them were DLC.

Why would Layton be a joke character? He's a trained fencer and despite not having any defined muscles he's obviously a very physically fit man.

Oh, I watched that video awhile ago. When he said "I ran the Layton account" I thought he meant something else, not the account that tried to pretend Layton was in Brawl lol

I won't reject any new characters but Layton does nothing for me. I want more Nintendo characters. :/

Layton is a de facto Nintendo character. He's never appeared on another console. I'm actually kind of curious if Nintendo has exclusive rights on where Layton, himself, can appear, because every spin off on another system doesn't have him directly appear. They published and helped market the games outside of Japan, maybe they have a small stake in the series.

A lot of people, especially outside of Japan, probably don't even know he isn't a Nintendo character. He always appeared as Nintendo made in marketing and stuff.

What type of moveset would he have based on those who have played the game? I love the unconventional characters like Duck Hunt and Bowser Jr.

He's a trained sword fighter. Although, if he's really added, I hope that doesn't actually take up a big part of his moveset, and they design it around puzzle gimmicks and objects somehow.

Eh, how about that mobile game Level-5 is making though?
Because Level-5 is pure evil.

This would be amazing if true but that tweet has to be sarcasm. I can't see his VA being so foolish as to go "Hey guys yep I'm on Smash, whatevs." Also, wouldn't this mean Layton was one of the winners of that voting ballot? I can't believe he'd be so popular as to win enough votes.

If he ever does show up on Smash, can one of his moves be throwing Luke or something? >__>
I just want moar Luke.

Layton is one of those third party characters I thought would never happen. He's definitely a great pick if true!

Yeah, he's really great pick but I felt that it's too good to be true in a sense. I would rather to see the announcement trailer before I get too excited about it.

I like Layton as a rep more than Wright but I still think the next third-party character should be Simon Belmont. After him they can start thinking about Level-5, Square Enix, or Tecmo Koei reps.

Is there a joke I'm missing?

BY2K once made a thread about a Direct announcement from "Nintendo Americo" on Twitter. Nintendo Americo was a fake account, so thus, the thread was about a hoax. It's why his Tag is "Membero Americo."

This Tweet was from the equally-fake Nintendo of Florida.

Y'all need to post some videos of Layton fighting. I only ever helped my wife with the puzzles.

I'm down, but that tweet reads like sarcasm to me
I would think that, too, but apparently the initial tweet is really old, and he responded over the summer that it wasn't true. Now he's going back on it. Kind of weird to go sarcasm months after your initial response, and then to lock your Twitter account.

That's what I was thinking. He wouldn't be this forward if this was true.

While I'm sure he'd utilize his fencing skills in his normal attacks, it's the specials that make me the most curious if this is true. Sakurai has been committed to making each Smash 4 newcomer very unique so I'd imagine a character like Layton would have crazy puzzle shenanigans in his moveset.

Best part of the whole ordeal is that an actual Direct was announced for the exact same date shortly afterwards.

It is odd, but so is a voice actor randomly deciding to ignore an NDA for no reason.

A natural choice. I don't typically like swordfighters, but I'll make an exception if the Professor winds up being a fencer.

Layton is one of my most wanted 3rd party characters. Hope it's true, and maybe we'll get another info dump from a future patch.
After the fiasco with Ryu & Roy, Sakurai & Co. made sure that their updates were wiped clean of any hints towards what's coming next.

Hmm... curious. We'll see.

I could live with it if true. Would be interesting to see where Sakurai goes with it, and it'd open the door to smaller, but more Nintendo-centric, third party characters. Shantae and Shovel Knight ahoy!

Given they locked their account and how common it is to tweet before you think, it's not too unthinkable that they they cracked a joke before realizing how it read and opted to close their account for the time being since it probably breaks NDA either way.

The Smash 4 announcer said the same thing about the fake Rayman leak; regardless of whether it was real or not, commenting on it would be breaking NDA.

I had no idea Layton was such a legitimate badass. I only ever played a bit of the first one, so I thought this was just a series of riddle-solving games.

That depends on how Sakurai views indie characters (as the trophies could have easily been a request of NoA). But let's be honest, who knows at this point? Surely not us.

Was wondering if we were going to get second Sega and Namco reps.

There aren't really clear ones for those companies so I was hoping for Bayonetta and Kos-Mos in terms of adding females and unique gameplay.

As from Layton he's definitely a character who's strongly associated with Nintendo but I would be bummed if all his standard attacks were fencing. Feels like going against the spirit of the game.

And if we're including third-party characters close to Nintendo last generation how about some Travis Touchdown? Please?
