NPD Sales for July 2015

Great!

Let's pack 2016 up people.

See you all in January 2017 where we'll pick the conversation up again!

It's been real, gang. See you in a year and a quarter.

Here are my revised predictions:
August - Sony (with the GameStop deal, they just eek one out)
September - Sony (Destiny, MGSV, Tearaway)
October - MS (Halo bundle trumps Nathan Drake HD)
November - Sony (Battlefront... that thing comes with 4 retro titles, Lara doesn't stand a chance)
December - MS (I think they'll have pull out some sweet last minute sale, but it'll be close)

2016 - Sony (you heard it here second)

I'm also taking the fact that the Stars Battlefront LE bundle was announced without a price a no pre-order option to mean a price drop is coming.

Yes very odd they didn't announce a price. It's tricky because there is a regular PS4 bundle with Battlefront and then there is the LE bundle. I expect the LE bundle to be $50 more while the regular bundle is regular price.

Cortana will secretly order Halo on all Win10 PCs.

Honestly, how can MS not win a month in which a new Halo comes out.

That's why I'm fully giving MS October. Halo is huge and even if it has lost some clout in recent years it's still a system mover.

Beyond October unless Halo has some great legs. Sony just has a better stable of advertising deals. COD and Battlefront.

MS clearly has marketing for Fallout 4 which will be a huge game but I think that game will do big numbers on both systems.

If MS can't manage to win November I don't see them winning December. I think the momentum of the Battlefront bundle along with the movie hype PLUS COD and any other deals Sony can and honestly should do will be too much.

Avatar quote me like you want, but I am pretty confident about that 5 million number.
The Witcher 3 sold 4 million in two weeks and mgsv is on last gen too which will probably do fine in Japan.

Isn't Hitman also coming out in December? I remember that outside of COD and Battlefront, Sony also has marketing rights to AC: Syndicate and Hitman.

Hitman is some early access (but don't call it that!) crap and digital only at first, I don't see Hitman impacting anything at all.

MS have Rainbow 6 Siege and Just Cause 3 marketing in December, but I doubt they will be significant against COD/BF/AC, MS do have TR and Fallout just after Halo however and they are yet to announce their holiday bundle(s)

I think so, but Syndicate is coming out on October. I still think PS4 wins Oct through NBA, AssCreed and Uncharted.

Xbone has marketing rights for Fallout, I do not know how that will affect sales though. If I were to guess, it will sell more on PS4. Also, Laura Croft releases on the same day as Fallout 4, both have exclusive Xbone marketing rights.

I wonder what's the total sales of Metal Gear Solid in the US.
I know is at 4,700,000 only with the first game and sons of liberty... can break 10 million with Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots, and Ground Zeroes?

Why do those posts bother you so? There have been predictions stating the opposite as well. Maybe I missed it, but did they say there can be no more speculation?

Madden is still bigger than Fifa.

Madden would regularly sell 4m+ on PS3/360.
Fifa would struggle to sell over 1.5m PS3/360.
Really? That kind of surprises me. With the worldwide audience, I'd have guessed FIFA would sell at least as much as Madden, if not more. Is that because the soccer market is split with … those other soccer games? Err, PES and Winning Eleven, I think they are?

Only in the U.S. which makes sense with American football being the most popular sport here. I'm sure FIFA stomps Madden in total sales.

No, it's because americans don't care about 'soccer'.

Maybe this year it'll change, women national team is in it and they won the world cup.

US Only.

Worldwide Fifa is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more popular.

It's a shame Team Ninja aren't working with EA on that....

Madden is still top dog (in the US). Here's the top 10 highest selling games in the US for 2014.

Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3)
Minecraft (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
Super Smash Bros. (3DS, Wii U)
NBA 2K15 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Watch Dogs (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U)
FIFA 15 (Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Wii, 3DS, Vita)

Zhuge i know this is a bit OT but should i get Samurai Warriors 4-II or just get first one? (or both)

Hmmm. I mean I'd get both. But that's me haha.

Honestly they are both games in their own right as they have their own stories and separate save files etc...

If you want to save money get SW4, if you want to get the latest version with tweaks get 4-II.

I'm going to be doing a giveaway for SW4 on the Koei Warriors forum this week if you're interested.

I can't believe MGS IV first month sold nearly the lifetime sales of Snake Eater... Do you also know how much sold MGS IV?
i remember it sold 995k in June 2008 with the PS3 bundle.

MGS (PS) = 2.5m
Sons of Liberty + Substance = 2.2m
Snake Eater + Subsistence = 1.45m
MGS4 excluding bundles is 1.8m, inc bundles is well over 2m of course.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I typed this from memory.

NPD has become so dull compared to several years back.

Now it is nothing but sequels. Oh well. I can't blame the publishers. Games cost tens (sometimes hundreds) of millions to make so they want to stick to things they know will sell.

Trivial anecdote: I know someone buying a system for Dragon Quest Heroes in October, however they're probably the only person in the US that will, lol

Madden will result in a SLIGHT bump, but nothing like what you are expecting. And the multiplatform MGS V will get TONS more attention than either Madden or Gears.

People on forums like to think it's the exclusive titles that move console hardware, but in reality, the multiplatform games (which are 90+% of all games being released this gen) have FAR more impact.

Bottom line? Sony has it locked up for the rest of the year. You have MGS V, Destiny Taken King, CoD, and probably the biggest title this fall, Star Wars Battlefront (which happens to release right before the new movie). Madden and Gears...and indeed, even Halo 5, aren't going to do much against firepower of that magnitude!

Madden will sell more copies than MGSV in the US.

Thanks for those information.
Including bundle MGS IV sold minimum 2.02 million considering 220,000 is only first month.
That's mean all combined should be > 8.17 million, withouth GZ...
Yeah, i believe by end of year Metal Gear Solid will become a 10 million seller in the US. ( MGS 1+2+3+4+ GZ + PP )

While you are right. No one in the US will be buying and PS4 for DQ heroes. I was just thinking that the lineup Sony has going into the Holiday is pretty strong. While not the strongest first party lineup you have, BloodBorne, Until Dawn, Tearaway, DQH, Uncharted collection.

Not to mention the 3rd party deals. Batman bundle, Battlefront Bundle, AC, COD, Destiny, MGSV.

If Sony wants they can really maximize sales this holiday.

August - Who knows
September - Sony
October - MS
November - MS
December -MS

The one thing you're forgetting is that MS will all but giveaway their console. I expect a $250 XB0 bundle with 4 triple A titles of choice, plus gold subscription, $50 to spend on XB marketplace. If however, XB doesn't get permission from MS to go all out on BOMBA this is what the following months will look like.

August - Still a who knows situation
September - Sony - Destiny bundle
October - MS - Halo bundle
November - Sony - exclusive rights to market Batttlefront, COD, AC Unity, NFS etc
December - Sony - See November

What I'm most excited about is MS' PR painting third party marketing in a bad light but then doing gimmicks to market those same games. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Destiny fragrance type marketing X6 at least.

Less of an impact because of the exclusive content. Same thing with BO3, the competitive switch and DLC basically trump a "Me Too" type of ad.

More like 20% (as the 9% seems to be the outlier, same for the 45%). If we're going to use numbers to generalize, might as well be in the ballpark.

You're applying a much more narrow definition to the term "in the neighborhood" than I feel is at all appropriate. Oh, well. Methinks we are not going to agree on how "in the neighborhood" can be used. To avoid this ambiguity, we can just use the average. PS4 has outsold XB1 by an average of 16% per month over the last three months. There. Much prefer dealing with hard numbers, anyways, but as my original point was an attempt to be general, felt using specific numbers was contrary to that goal.

In any case, this month's ranking should provide much more spread to the point's results, as there's a 10-point bonus for getting the ranking right and there's actual differing, non-fringe viewpoints on it for the month! Woo-hoo!

EA gave Sony marketing rights to NFS? Guess that makes sense with Microsoft pushing Forza 6 and Sony with no exclusive racing game this Fall. EA is so deep in bed with MS that I'm surprised when they partner with Sony though.

One thing I've learned is that before confirmation of marketing rights is official or announced you can always see who has the deal by the platform they display preview footage on. In particular the buttons. By that measure and the fact that NFS is always demoed with PS4 command prompts.

playstation-symbols.jpg

I'd say with some degree of certainty PS4 has not just NFS but pretty much every multiplat "unannounced" marketing rights except for Just Cause.

Flawed logic? Perhaps. But it's proved 100% right thus far with this gen.

We will need to work on terms and conditions and duration of the avatar change but yes, I'd be up for that.

For the second time though, welcome back Z!

Well basically the price has to hit $250 or lower before the end of 2015 with at least one game bundled.

The price must be officially announced by Microsoft themselves as part of a holiday bundle or something. It can be temporary or permanent. It can't just be one store/clearance sale/used console, must be official price.

Winner gets avatar control from November NPD results day through December NPD results day.

If price remains over $250 then I win. If price drops below $250 with at least one game bundled then you win.

I can see 300$ official price and 280$ unofficial during Black Friday, but there is no way for a 250$ price, not even unofficial during Black Friday, let alone 250$ + 4 games...
