Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Opinions, how do they work?

They said best looking, not best tech.

Aesthetics are all opinion at the end of the day, but I'd have to agree in that MGSV looks for its time similar to how MGS2 did. The lighting, animation, and style are very natural, and so don't jump out at you as being omg so amazing, but at the same time, in quite a few years, I imagine MGSV will also be like MGS2 in that it will still look stunning, and perfectly capture its intended style, while other games you will look back on and go, man, I remember when I thought that looks amazing, but now all these things jump out at me.

Even now, I can play MGS2 and it looks great, minus the faces. A perfectly rendered box will remain a perfectly rendered box for a very long time, where as a neatly rendered box with a bunch of cool effects on it might age and those effects will become more noticeable with time.

Like Conker's Bad Fur Day. The fur looked amazing at the time, but now it looks kind of neat in that I know the techniques used to achieve it and it doesn't look realistic at all.

Maybe I'm fanboying, so Pinch of Bucket of Truck of Dumpster of salt.

I would agree that the cutscenes are very nice looking but when you're actually playing it's impossible not to notice how bad some stuff looks. In this pic most of the ground and foliage just looks like a mess.

I think people are really underestimating the fact that this is 60FPS all the way through on top of all the shit that goes on at the same time plus the dynamic weather and day/night cycle. Cutscenes are also real time as well.

LOD is not an issue for the Infinigen version.

But yeah, I feel like one should judge how well it can look given the most optimal release.

I have no problem saying MGSV is has the best aesthetic / graphics that I've laid eyes on. Especially the stuff around Mother Base at certain times of the day.

Damn Google suggested searches. I was catching up on the Peace Walker story and searched a character name from the game, and the suggested search that comes up was (I think) a major spoiler for MGSV.

So annoying. It's like you have to live under a rock these days to avoid spoilers for everything.

I've played all of them. Used to be my favorite series. Despised MGS4 and couldn't get into the gameplay of Ground Zeroes. I found it unintuitive and it just never gripped me. I want to like MGSV, I just wonder if I can anymore.
Why would you despise MGS4? If you played and liked MGS3 you should be able to wrap your head around Ground Zeroes! Maybe you're just burnt out on MGS in general, I can't think of a more consistent (whether it's in craziness or mechanics) series.

Of course. Internet 101. Ask here for advice. People posted some nice videos about PW. Like directly above your post.

Man, I'm not a Metal Gear Solid fan, but what I've been hearing about the world and gameplay has me REALLY interested in this.

Only Metal Gear I've played is Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes.
I'm interested in buying this next week though. Not sure how lost on the story I'm going to be, or if this would be a wise purchase. Maybe I should wait for the hype to die down a bit.

Someone send this person a Legacy collection asap.

Has anyone or any review mentionned if /how the timers for updates are fair ?

Or do you have to wait hours for higher gear as an incentive to pay shortcuts ?

All I've heard is that the higher tier of gear has higher timers. For example, the very first tier has no timers whatsoever and is instant development, but the higher the tier (or tech level) the wait time increases.

The fact you can use MB Coins to speed up development time doesn't bode well for how long it will take for highest tier gear and weapons.

I think I've seen people mention seeing 30-minute timers already, wouldn't be surprised if the best stuff took hours to develop.

Which is fucking terrible. Would using cheatengine to skip the wait be considered stealing from Konami? Lol

Yooo that is awesome.

lol at "FUCK YOU" on Kojima's shirt.

use that time to take a break from long hours of play, like MGS4 would remind you :B

Now i'm very cautious about this...

in fairness, that picture is from a year ago at tgs '14, and the ps4 build has at least seen a boost in texture filtering quality and vegetation compared to other pre-release gameplay seen in 2014.

Wouldn't be so bad if the timers were based on real time instead of game time.

Yeah, long timers that encourage players to fork out money to reduce the waiting time are massive asshole design, and add to that the fact that they do not, in fact, progress when you're not in the game... Ugh.

I can't seem to convey my feelings accurately, so a plain "ugh" will have to do. It's disgusting.

Honestly, I'd have prefer'd how it worked with Peace Walker. Grind a couple quick Side OPs and boom, development finished.

But, you know, Konami.

My copy including steelbook has just arrived from shopto UK.

\o/

What the fuck, bloke on the phone at ShopTo yesterday told me they were under a release embargo by Konami and weren't allowed to send them out until today. I've just checked my steelbook order and it's arriving today between 3 and 4.

I've got two copies of MGS5 early from two different retailers.

he seems to put hollywood people on a pedestal. didn't avi arad convince kojima to ditch hayter, and he's always looking to film directors for acknowledgement (del toro and George Miller)
fixed. He's obsessed with films. I know, who would of thunk, he's never given such indication before. Nope.

I never got far into PW so I have no idea if grinding side missions got frustrating, but its system certainly sounds better.

Wait, isn't that who is adapting the Borderlands movie that just got announced? I'd love to say that it means good things, but he also did the Bratz film. (Don't ask why I watched the Bratz film.)

Some of the Side OPs could be completed pretty quickly. It's been a couple years since I played, but I recall that you could clear some in less than 45 seconds, so it got pretty easy to grind out unlocks for the higher gear.
