GameStop: We have sold 3x as many PS4's than PS3's when launches are aligned

During Gamestop's recent conference call for Q2 they noted that PlayStation 4 sales through Gamestops retail and online channels have been 3x more than PlayStation 3 sales in the same timeframe. The timeframe being referenced here is the first 22 months of sales for the console.

GameStop also noted that the number of Xbox One units sold in the past 22 months has been almost double the amount of Xbox 360's they sold through in the same timeframe from launch.

Gamestop of course noted that this trend is not the same across the entire industry so what this shows is that Gamestop has a higher share of next gen hardware.

Please see the chart below to demonstrate total sell through in the USA for the PS4 and Xbox One and how it compares to PS3 and 360 in the same time frame. Please note that the title references sales from Gamestop only where as the below chart shows total sales from all retailers.

Gamestop also noted that Destiny sold through nearly 3 million units in the USA (excluding bundles) at retail according to NPD as of October 31st 2014 and this year they expect Halo 5 to be the biggest seller during August 1st to October 31st 2015 despite only a few days on the market.

According to Gamestop, sales of Madden 16 had a 42% digital attach rate. Gamestop are seeing many more digital purchases on triple AAA titles compared to last year.

PS3 and Xbox 360 sales are falling faster than ever down 56% YOY but this has been partially offset by PS4 and Xbox One software sales which are up 64% YOY.

Gamestop are working with Sony and Microsft on physical bundles over digital bundles. So unlike last year where you saw Assassins Creed Unity as a digital download, this year you will see the physical version of the game in the box like with Madden 16. Gamestop currently sell more than half of total PS4 and Xbox One software at retail.

Does that take in to account their market share? I feel like the PS3 launch was long before they absorbed EB and other retailers and they've expanded a good bit since then...

Consoles are dead!...

Seriously, I'm glad the PS4 (and Xbox One) are doing well this gen.

... i still love you, Wii U. You tried. Kinda.

Not sure if this is thread worthy. This seems to be about what everyones been saying for months now. We know PS4 and XB are doing much better (so far) then the last gen variants.

It's a good question that they didn't really answer.

What they were trying to say was that their hardware share has really increased this gen compared to last gen and they're selling a lot more consoles. In fact their revenue for next gen hardware was up this quarter whilst the total revenue generated by all retailers declined.

More than 30% of next gen hardware sales are enabled via trade in credits at gamestop.

Read the rest of the thread.

PS3 launched in 2006, the merger was announced in 2005 but I believe went through in 2006.

42% digital attach rate on Madden? I assume this is only in their stores and that the total percentage is larger when you factor in people buying it straight off of the networks.

It's something that retailers have been pushing for as they earn the revenue on sales. Expect to see it happen more and more, even if digital is growing.

Correct, their stores only.

That graph is actually interesting to me that PS4 and xbone are so close in the U.S. For GameStop at least.
Also xbone doubling 360 in a similar time frame is also encouraging.

That graph is not for gamestop.

It's for total US retail sales. It says so in the text above the graph.

Did Gamestop actually confirm they had this arrangement already made or that they were trying to make this arrangement happen?

It's in Gamestop's best interest to limit the digital share of games sold/bought as much as possible since they find used game sales so profitable.

I'll be surprised if MS goes with physical copies in all their bundles this year considering their track record thus far

They seem to imply it's already been done. That at least the majority will be physical. May still be some digital ofc.

It is important to note that during the recent release of EA's Madden 16, we worked with our partners to offer a free physical game with the purchase of either a PS4 and Xbox One and did not carry the Xbox One digital bundle. We expect that if a game is provided as a promotional item in a hardware bundle, GameStop will see more of these physical offers than digital pack-ins on upcoming third-party releases.

Huh I wonder if that means these physical "bundles" will be exclusive to gamestop then because every other US retailer had the digital XB1 madden bundle?

MS has the forza and Halo bundles coming next but they're also SE consoles so I have a feeling that Gamestop [or any retailer] won't have a physical game bundle of those consoles available

Still an interesting development nonetheless

Interesting how even the 4 lines are. The biggest difference is that X360 growth in year one, and 3rd holiday but otherwise pretty parallel. I'd like to see the Wii and Wii U on it too though. And a 8-9 year figure.

It helps when consumers don't need to get a second job to buy a system
or whatever they said when the PS3 launched.
.

Keep up the momentum, Sony, and don't let the success cause a slip back into that caustic arrogance. I'll always buy Sony platforms at launch, but the average same consumer isn't so easily convinced.

god, look at those wii sales

what were we thinking? that's like beatlemania

Wii was an anomaly that will never be repeated in the console space. Even PS2 which eclipsed Wii's total LTD never sold anywhere near Wii levels at the same time periods

Yup, the Wii sold very well early on for the first 3 years of its lifecycle. After that it started to slow.

Grats to both consoles. That's a weird quarter that they're using for the Halo 5 bit though since it's right before the November onslaught.

What's the XB1 on worldwide? I thought it was around 11 or 12m...so if those USA sales of just shy of 8m are correct, then its performance everywhere else is...well, terrible.

Wii U pretty much flatlined, as expected.
