Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

BiGBoSSMk23

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Got mine today from graingergames Uk with steelbook only 39.99£

Thank you for this.

My girlfriend who works at EB GAMES showed me the CE and that shit is CHEAP.

The box is embossed cardboard made to look like leather.

I just put the order in for the steel book.

Here's hoping the shipping is speedy. I'm in Canada :(

Have not pre-ordered this yet but I'd like to play day 1 so I'm going for a digital PC code. Is there a current best place to buy this in terms of price? I checked GMG but they don't have keys atm it seems.

The Neogaf buy and sell thread. You can buy a NVIDA key from there for cheap.

Got my copy this morning from Shopto with the steel book. I have to say it is far superior to the normal cover.

Some screens:

However I noticed something

Steelbook as advertised

Steelbook at release

Not even on the Steelbook is Kojima's name safe.

Seriously Konami screw you
There a way of replacing steelbook spines, being Silver could be a problem though unless you know how to get a print like that.

Man screw that. It might sound silly, but I was really looking forward to having that KojiPro logo on the spine :-(

Played around 10 hours now and while I'm enjoying it, my pre-release worries have been totally justified.

Pros
  • Mechanically, the game is perfect. Probably the most complete stealth game ever made.
  • Graphics are wonderful, as are all of the animations and the way enemies act and talk to each other.
  • Plenty of casette tapes which are really interesting and do a great service to the overall story, which is sadly lacking (at least so far) within gameplay and cutscenes.

Cons
  • So far, apart from a couple, the missions aren't great. I feel like I'm just extracting people from the same locations over and over. Hope it varies soon.
  • It is infuriating to have the credits appear before and after every mission, especially considering how it spoils any characters you're about to meet. I skip them at the end but it's still frustrating.
  • The bloody helicopter rides. The same 60 seconds wasted just sitting in the helicopter at the start of the mission, and the constant trek to the closest extraction point at the end, bookmarked by loading screens.
  • ANALYSIS COMPLETE. ANALYSIS COMPLETE. ANALYSIS COMPLETE. ANALYSIS COMPLETE. ANALYSIS COMPLETE. I really regret upgrading my iDroid.
  • What is the point of Mother Base? I'm encouraged to return regularly but there's nothing to do once I arrive. I've had a go searching around for diamonds and other collectables but it's very tedious.
  • The lack of exposition, minimal cutscenes, and the fact that Big Boss is basically a mute. Just doesn't feel right for an MGS game.

Overall I'm just disappointed that it feels so disjointed. I want my hand-tailored epic, a crafted narrative like the others. Instead, I'm changing my loadout every half an hour, doing filler missions about extracting sheep from an outpost, and dealing with constant helicopter rides and loading screens. Stop, start, stop, start. It feels like an episodic game. Hope it changes soon.

I know its not the place but there is no thread on which i can ask this.

1- When does the pre-load starts?
2- When does the game unlock? (Region makes any difference?) (PS4)

Nothing really to say but :(

I'm from the start wanted MGS5 to be a linear game with some killer visuals running at 30 fps, I wanted it to be filled with cinematic and story, but not only that, I wanted it to be varied, to have some unexpected missions, with memorable moments in gameplay as well as story, like in MGS2 how it felt like a crazy roller-coaster, going from a mission where you defuse bombs with Snake, to listen with a microphone to a target's heartbeat while being disguised as en enemy soldier to finding yourself running naked as Raiden.

You didn't know what will happen next in previous games, and I loved it for it.
I'm sure MGS5 got the best gameplay in the series, but MGS is more than just great mechanics, it's a wild and unexpected ride.

Anyone else have an issue with installing game data? Mine just seems to sit there and the seconds left never go down.....

EDIT: seemed to be an issue with the PS4 disc reading error, just had to reboot the console

I've never seen such a flood of people getting a game early on NeoGaf and YouTube.

And of course I'm not one of them.

Damn Konami, just cancel the street date already so places like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and GameStop will sell the damn thing.

I'm on vacation in beautiful cities around Europe away from my ps4 until October. I'm trying to enjoy my vacation but it's ruined by the fact that all I want to play is this game. So at least you're not in my ironic grass-is-greener position lol.

True... that'd be me.

That seals the deal, gonna get the game used as this was one of my most anticipated features. I find it really funny that I could buy this plus all of Destiny compared to say the extreme case with the $80 MB. Also only one Mother Base is available to have other three must be bought with the MB points.

Konami pushing Pay to Play on consoles. Konami worst publisher this year.

It's not that weird. Maybe the 30fps in particular part is a rare statement, but I'd sacrifice the 60 in a heartbeat for more cutscenes. (If the world actually worked that way, of course.)

I prefer relative linearity over open world any day, and I'm not so sure MGSV will be the game that finally changes my mind, considering it seems like it's had to sacrifice some of the same things most do.

Can you guys connect to the servers yet?

I have the game since last Wednesday, have never been able to connect online which I understood but it's almost Tuesday here and the servers seem to still be offline?

Eurogamer - ESSENTIAL

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-09-01-metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain-review

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is not just a high watermark for the series. It is the greatest ever stealth game by a distance, a true masterclass from a designer and team who bow out at the very peak of their creative powers. This is one of the greatest blockbusters our medium has ever had as well as the perfect ending to one of gamings' great series - and the end of one incredible, extended journey from Hideo Kojima. For decades to come, players will see the legacy of Metal Gear Solid, and have no choice but to salute.

That Eurogamer review is beyond positive. Just an entire review of praise. Wish the UPS driver would hurry up and get my CE to me.

Are the servers down?

How do you switch to online mode in game?
I don't see the option at all.

When you are in your ACC or whatever it's called, the helicopter, you can go to the pause menu and choose "GO ONLINE".

For some reason, you can't choose GO ONLINE from the title screen. If it fails to connect when the game starts, you have to load the game, then go to the pause menu.

Repetitive missions
Lack of original gameplay sequences
Never gets into a good rhythm
Lack of intensity in the storytelling

They say the first few hours should impress fans and newcomers alike.
It sounds similar to what X-ONE Magazine UK (8/10) said.

The structure of the game seems to wear on some people, especially those who might be looking for a more traditional MGS experience.

There's only one thing that really bugs me. Water. Why the hell are there no deep waters?
Supposed rivers in Africa are only a foot deep. Breaks the immersion immensely. Possible gameplay feature like swimming would have been a nice addition to the array of things you can do. Since so much time was spent on the environment it feels off not having proper water in at least some places.

Besides this complaint this game is THE game. So dynamic. So many possibilities to complete missions and whatnot.

Sorry, but I have no idea how this game got 10's across the board. Did reviewers not see the amount of problems the game has?
