Agreed, either drop the price before or in October or don't drop the price at all. I don't think dropping the price at PSX would give significant gains to sales.

It won't. I've said this before. Sony put themselves in a really good position this holiday with their marketing deals and bundles to sell most if not all their stock this holiday.

lowering the price $50 bucks this holiday wouldn't change that. So I'm not really expecting a price drop in NA this year.

I'm really not sure that $50 price drop would generate that many more sales. It really seems like a half step to me. A full $100 would be the sweet spot IMO but all signs point to it being $50 if at all. I would imagine the Star Wars bundle has more selling potential than a $50 price cut but as I said previously that largely depends on the success of the movie so time will tell.
Agree that 50$ is only half baken. They don't really need the drop to sell well this holiday season. And if they want to go for the kill 100 it should be. Better keep the pricetag and make a heavy black friday offer.
"Depends on the success of the movie"... Be assured that there is nothing to worry about. The movie will be the event of the year.
Only concern is that the game has no single player campaign. This should turn many casuals off or cause bad user reviews on amazon when uninformed customers realise just what they bought.

I know there will be some really great bundles this holiday season, but I'm still expecting a price drop. The PS4 has been on sale for 22 months in the US without a price drop and I think PGW will be the perfect time to do it.

At this point, I'm expecting a special reduction on the actual day of Black Friday (possibly even the entire weekend if they have enough stock) of $50, and maybe they even throw in a year of Plus or an extra controller or a PS Camera with purchase to increase the value. Other than that, it stays at $400 with value added bundles for the rest of the holidays, and the price drop happens probably in early Q2, after all the big early year games have been released.

They would lose a little potemtial market share but would win big on profit.
Sounds like a fair trade.

I'm very curious to see how the TTK boxed version will sell.

Surely it will crack the top 5 or so, but... can it even be number 1 despite MGS?

I wouldn't count on it breaking top 5. Seems like a LOT of people are buying digital and theres the Bundle SKU for people upgrading to next gen. It might be in the top 10 but being in the lower five seems more likely to me.

Even Phil Spencer "fully expect" price cut for PS4 in US, so apparently is coming...

Would rather have someone from Sony, not MS, talk about PS4 price cuts, but okay.

I'd have no problem at all with being wrong. Having more PS4s in the market would be a great thing.

I expect a press release for NA/EU announcing a price drop for 10/1/2015 next week.

I guess the UK is dropping with UC. Perhaps announce at Paris, then implement same day as the UK? That'd be fun.

Huh. He's telling us that his biggest competitor is about to have a price drop? So, maybe we should hold off for a couple of months before buying a Playstation 4?

Nope, I can't see any ulterior motives there.

Asia and UK just received price drops. Close to 2 years is also longer than typical before seeing a price drop. Even the PS2 got one in May 2002. which was a little over 1.5 years.

Sounds like a fair trade.

history show us that the platform holders don't really care much for hardware margins. They always preferred to take hit on the hardware in hope of seeing more software royalties, doubt that will change.

How is Minecraft still doing so well? Doesn't everyone and their mom already have a copy of it?

Now their dads want one.

For the first time in a long time, Sony care this gen and are trying to generate margin on hardware sales.

Anyway, what's his name at TGS confirmed to Famtisu that Sony will still make a profit on console hardware at this new price point because production costs have decreased. Sony also confirmed the production cost decrease (I'm guessing for 1200 series mainly) in their quarterly financial report.

Couple months? Sounds like if something's going to happen it'll happen by Paris. More like a couple weeks.

And ulterior motives lol. The guy's answering an interview question about how he sees things shaking out.

Destiny TTK White bundle + MGSV for $399 on Amazon, I think September NPD is Sony win hands down.

Well, it was obvious since August. :D

The bundles arrive 9th October along with the game. The 500GB bundle is £299.99, the 1TB bundle £329.99.

Question for NPD gaf. Will PS4's September NPD win be beaten by XBO's October NPD win?

I'm asking because when that Halo bundle hit, it was hot for a week and then fell out of the Amazon top 100 and has never been back there since. While the PS4 Destiny bunlde has never left the top 100. According to Amazon monthly

August 2015

XBO LTD Halo 5 bundle #24
PS4 LTD Destiny bundle #33

But like I said earlier the Halo bundle left the top 100 after one week while the PS4 Destiny bundle keeps selling and so

September 2015 (again monthly)
PS4 LTD Destiny bundle #14
XBO LTD Halo 5 bundle #outside the top 100

Oh and by the way, still using Amazon's top 100 that LTD PS4 Star Wars bundle that a good portion of gaf called "ugly" has already outsold that LTD Halo bundle too. Charting at #12 on September Monthly.

Could you repeat the question, Will PS4 win September? Yes

What does the Halo bundle that releases in October have to do with September NPD and the Destiny Bundle?

If you meant October NPD then it would be harder to answer you that.

No he's asking if in October Xbox One will win by a bigger margin than PS4 will win in September.
Answer: if Sony doesn't wait until the end of October to cut the price in the US as it seems likely right now, we should question if Xbox is going to win October at all.

Xbox wins October hands down because of Halo 5. I doubt Sony drops the price in October if they do. Don't think it would have much of an effect on things.

Like someone said earlier. I could see stores doing a temp price drop on the PS4 for black friday and maybe that weekend.

On a side note I can't wait until our retail buddies give us their insight for september. I'm sure the PS4 will come out on top but I can't wait to hear about how the TKK bundle did and how MGSV is fairing from platform to platform.

Oh, thanks, bit early in the morning and understood like 3 different things in that question.

To answer your question, if Sony Price Cuts the PS4 in the US in the beginning of October like the rest of the world I could see Xbox One winning by a small margin.

Do to influx of people that where waiting for the PS4 price to drop and the Uncharted Bundle of course.

Imo, IF Sony drops the price to $349 in October (almost a given by now, it's already been confirmed in Asia, UK and India so far), the PS4 will be very competitive vs the XB1+Halo 5 during that month, perhaps even possibly winning it.

A $349 Uncharted Collection bundle would be hard to resist for a lot of potential buyers imo (to say nothing of the Limited TTK edition, which would then be also $349).

A $100 drop to $299 would make a far bigger splash obviously, but it doesn't look like Sony will go there (yet).

In UK Destiny The Taken King sold only 16% of what Destiny sold in launch week, so there's no doubt about first place in september.

At retail remember.

Digital will have counted for a lot.

But yeh, as NPD is physical only then I wouldn't expect Destiny to beat MGS.

I'm asking if the gap increase PS4 creates in September. Will that be negated by the gap increase XBO creates in October? Which will be larger?

Given how each bundle is selling according to the Amazon monthly chart.

Makes sense, most hardcore Destiny players bought a digital copy of TTK. I expect TTK to take the top spot on PSN and XBL for the month of September. Not too shabby for an expansion/dlc.

It's been a forgone conclusion that PS Classics would be making their way to PS4. I continue to be surprised it hasn't happened already. While it's something I'm really looking forward to personally it doesn't really seem like something that would influence the mass market at all. It's definitely an enthusiast perk. One that will undoubtedly prove incredibly profitable for them as that enthusiast crowd is known for shelling out the money for the things they want (i.e. PS Classics on PS4).

The major difference between the two is that the XB1 BC is focused on last gen software running at original fidelity presumably in an effort to stem the tide of 360 users migrating to the Sony ecosystem this holiday season whereas the PS Classics would be old school games possibly running at higher resolutions with additional features (trophies) aimed at the gaming enthusiast market that would remember and repurchase these older titles.

For the MS solution, the major problem is that they are trying to convert 360 owners but it's not a universal compatibility solution and, as such, would have very limited appeal to the mainstream 360 owners that haven't migrated to next gen yet. Thus, despite it being a very cool perk for those who have the system, it's unlikely to sway purchases in the way MS would like for it to. What's odd is they don't seem particularly eager or concerned with making their solution profitable for them. There doesn't appear to be any intention of bringing these BC titles for purchase on the XBL store (unless I'm mistaken) instead it's being sold as a value add for either previously purchased last gen games or new releases by way of bundling in previous gen entries in the series.

However, I fully expect Sony to approach their solution with profitability in mind from the get go instead of just being a value add for customers. I honestly believe they will have us repurchase titles we may already own due to the enhancements they are enabling on PS4. People would rightfully be upset but the people who love those games will still buy them. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. That's been proven time and again. I don't really see this implementation spurring mass market adoption either. It, like the XB1 implementation, will sell some consoles to enthusiasts but won't make any meaningful sales outside of the core group that have already purchased these next gen consoles.

The way I see it, it seems quite likely Sony will announce a price drop for the PS4 in the US next month. If they do, I think the sales of both consoles will be very close, maybe even with the PS4 very slightly ahead. If there is no price drop, I can see the XB1 leading by a significant margin, but probably smaller than the gap between the two in September.

The PS4 is getting Uncharted NDC and AC Syndicate bundles next month in the US IIRC. While those two bundles will likely move systems, without a price drop, I don't think it's enough to give the PS4 a win in October. Either way, I see the gap between the two being larger in September than in October.

PS4 price drop will give it the October win without a shadow of a doubt.

I don't know man, it's Halo 5. You know how Microsoft gets with the Halo marketing. For them it's a mass media event, it's just crazy.

Unless MS is not investing heavily in marketing like they did back in the Bungie days, I can't see how PS4 dropping 50 USD to match XBO's current price, with Halo on XBO's side will give Sony the edge.

I guess what I'm saying is that I do have a shadow of a doubt and it could go either way, or just be a really close win.
The question is will there be yet another XB1 pricedrop.
Too soon, I think? It would have been less than a year since they dropped the price officially.

lowering the price $50 bucks this holiday wouldn't change that. So I'm not really expecting a price drop in NA this year.
You should tell this brilliant marketing strategy to Sony's marketing team during the PS2 era. They really fucked up lowering the price considering how many units they eventually sold.

When it comes to price drops...

It's possible that after October NPD we find out that Halo's big win was actually smaller than Destiny bundle big win leaving PS4 still ahead by 800K + in NA.

But I don't see a price drop coming before Both Sony's Limited Edition bundles have gone on sale. That Star Wars bundle is selling at a healthy rate here and that BOPS3 (which according to gamestop ceo is set to be a juggernaut) LTD Bundle really kicks in.

Sometime after the 17th of November - Black Friday (25th) we'll see a $50 price drop and the PS4 will fly of the shelves.

We like playing as a family. So we have 4 copies on our 4 computers. I am surprised at the numbers of console purchases though. You would think that should be saturated by now.

No Nintendo Minecraft Mushroom Kingdom still stings this generation.

I think the way Sony is doing it could maybe push hardware sales more as Cosmic was sneakily getting at (gathering post for wall of shame? lol). PS2 games (PS1 also?) with enhanced visuals and trophy support would definitely get a few to purchase PS4's. People love their throphies. But i agree it wouldn't be anything significant.

No shame. Only joy.

I think anything that increases the playable libraries of these new boxes is a good thing when it comes to the value proposition and, ultimately, sales.

Would be better if those playable libraries were increased via real new games and not just artificially enlarging the libraries via emulation. Going backwards isn't a good way for the industry to move forward in my opinion.

I predict for September 410,000 PS4 and 275,000 XBO. So, 135k gap.

For October, i expect 100k gap, 400,000 XBO, 300,000 PS4.

So, yes, i predict a bigger gap in September.

Totally agree... but production costs are increasing much faster than revenue opportunity. Risk is higher than ever as well, when a game flops, it flops hard.

Given all the other areas a dev or pub can invest in... making big new Console games seems a high risk, not high enough reward bet.

Only going to get worse.

That's why the Pachter thread is so entertaining. The man tells the truth... more markets need to be found that can buy this content for it to keep getting made.

Back to backwards comp. Now, there's just getting old stuff to run on a new box. There's an appeal there, but a slim one. But then there's improving the old stuff to run in new ways... while not as good as new content, gotta think there's a bit more appeal to something like that?
