PS2 Game spotted in Live From PlayStation playing on PS4. Might be fake, not sure.

The biggest thing, for me, is hope that PS1/PS2 games on PS4 (if this is a done deal) don't have the lag that they had on the PS3. Really, that just killed backward compatibility for a number of games, and having that gone would be a wonderful thing,

I really think it was something wrong with the PS3 itself, because PS1 games on PSP/Vita don't have the lag problem.

Valkyrie Profile 2 *-*

OMG!!!

Got me excited there for a second, I thought VP2 was in the rumor...

Playing PS2 discs would be the god-tier, but no one should be expecting that, sadly. Making all previous classics from the PS3 compatible would be good. Starting the ,,classics'' line all over again with trophies in snail speed release schedules would be eeeh.

I would expect a full reveal before the Star Wars bundles drop, which would imply that if it's going to be revealed at a conference, it will be Paris Game Week. With that said, I actually expect this won't get conference time, but rather be revealed in a PlayStation Blog post before PGW. I expect this will be the big feature of firmware 3.0, and I would expect that will drop in October.

Predictions: no disc support, digital only. Will be retroactively cross-buy with PS1 Classics and PS2 Classics. Not all games will get trophy support. Not all of the PS1 and PS2 Classics will be available at launch, but the collection will be built up over time as developers get the opportunity to decide whether or not to add trophies.

Now I'm tempted to buy the GTA Trilogy in case this is actually happening. It's only $7.50 on the PS Store right now.

So this is the reason we bought a new console? Just to play remasters and ports of old games? Pathetic.

Just kidding I am super down for this and hope its true.

If I'm not mistaken the lag is actually input due to the use of non crt tvs.I could be wrong though.

Honestly, that would blow people's minds and send me scrambling for some of the ps2 titles I missed out on.

I'm expecting the digital PS2 games to work with some sort of trophies to each title.

I bought SMT: Nocturne on PS3 when it first came out and haven't touched it because I was convinced that they would offer PS2 games on PS4. Finally, the dream is real. My only concern is whether I will have to buy them again or not and whether the games I want to will be available or will they be rolled out

they're both dumb. Nintendo is the King of backwards compability.

There's not really a king in my eyes. Nintendo has it down if you only go back a previous generation (despite the garbage Wii Mode you have to engage in), but their virtual console support is garbage.

Sony is late to the game, and who knows what'll be selected from the PS1/PS2/PS3 era. Now is not a good replacement, even if I've had no problems with it.

MS is doing a fine job on the consumer side, but I feel like a huge load of Japanese games aren't going to get in.

Does the trophy patent allow for retroactively award trophies based on existing saves?

I have no idea if the patent does, but I seriously doubt it. Huge waste in time coding it, just to create something extremely exploitable that would make trophies irrelevant as people just used save transfers.

No chance, imo. Even if it wasn't exploitable at all, it's just not worth the time to code. Be thankful we might get trophies.

Makes sense, I didn't think of that. Never mind.

It depends on whether loading the saves recreates the circumstances that allows the emulator to award it.

This is assuming, of course, that you can load existing saves onto PS4. My gut is telling me you won't be able to.

I could see this happen. Especially since we're at a point where two-year old smartphones can emulate PS1 games with ease. PS4 should have no issues emulating PS1/2 games and PS Now is there for PS3 games.

It might work. If the trophies trigger off of disc reads, it'll trigger the trophies whenever that part of the disc is accessed. So like in my FFXII example, any trophies based on the Sky Pirate's lounge (or whatever it's called, been forever) could pop when you go in there. If it's something like a cutscene that you can only get once, then it might not be retroactive.

Of course that's assuming you can transfer saves from anywhere else. PS2 saves are a great way to get homebrew code running.

Would be great fan service and there is definitely a ton of good buzz around it. Can't say I would use It though, there's like a handful of games I would ever go back to, and they would have to be HD updated. MGS, pop in some older SF games, crash, and jrpgs. Lot of stuff doesn't age well after the nostalgia wears.

What if they drop this bomb along with 3.0? No conference or anything, just BOOM here play all your PS2 classics with trophies.

I'm getting myself too hyped.

I'm always really pleased when backwards compatibility of any sort is announced on a console but I find after the excitement dies down I only use it for about an hour. It was like that when I bought my launch PS3 and exactly the same when I rejoined the Xbox preview program but after a bit of a go on Banjo & Kazooie I haven't looked at it again.

I'd rather it was there than not there on all systems but I'm not sure if I'll get much use out of. There re-releasd Star Wars games that have had a bit of a polish and trophy support added are more my sort of thing really.

I hope it's native disc and digital support with HD rendering, I'll flip if it's is.

Question: Is the Star Wars set that is coming with enhanced graphics and trophy support coming as a "PS4" game or a "PS2" classic. Since, Siren is being listed as a "PS2" classic here - it might not get trophy support.

It would really be awesome to see that huge PS2 library come with slightly enhanced graphics and trophy support! MY GOD! Generation over.

Twisted Metal Black and Dark Cloud were recently registered as classics no? How awesome would enhanced graphics and trophy support be there.

Don't expect disc support

I think it all depends on how they roll it out. If updates and trophies are required then probably not.

I do think either way it is unlikely that they roll the trophies out to PS1 games, unless they update the vita's emulator. I don't think that will happen, so I'm thinking trophies are PS2 games only.

i just hope that when this does get announced/launched they touch on a game plan for the future.

I expect Disc support so Sony can dodge a lot of hassle renewing rights.
Having download only will only hender any sort of library of games they want to support.
But ya right, Sony are stupid enough to disable it even though it probably can do it.
And about Trophies, didn't the software mention it can be done from disc, there was no mention of download only, it did actually use disc as an example.

I suspect it'll be digital only if trophy support is included. I wonder if developers would go back and create artwork for trophies or if it'll just be generic pictures.

PS1 & 2 sure, that would/will be great. But don't forget PSP too, lot of great games there. No reason not to make them compatible too.

For you.
I want to believe in trophy support for PS2 games, but they can't add trophies without touching the game's code, right ? How are they going to do that ?
They can. The emulator can have checks on it to trigger trophies when certain conditions are met. Its definitely possible and already be done by the Retro Achievements team that did it for several retro console games.

Wasn't one of the PS3 Uncharted games on Live from Playstation some months back as well? I seem to recall a thread about it (unrelated to the remaster collection).

I would play my PS4 a lot more if I had access to my PS1 and PS2 games.

I'd definetly be down for PS2 games with trophy support. Dark Cloud 2 with trophies son.

Anyone remember this a couple years ago?

Title: METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AWARDING TROPHIES
Published: 03/21/2013
Filed: 09/19/2012

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adding trophy support games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game. The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored.
