PS2 Game spotted in Live From PlayStation playing on PS4. Might be fake, not sure.

PS4 would have went down as the dopest console in history if they just forgot about PS3 backwards compatibility and just added the ability to play your PS2 game discs. That would be ultimate HNNNNGGG.

Wasn't one of the PS3 Uncharted games on Live from Playstation some months back as well? I seem to recall a thread about it (unrelated to the remaster collection).
I think what you are referring to is when they accidentally used it in some marketing trailer thingy to show off some of the sharing features for the ps4.

Regarding disc support, I thougth that the PS4 doesn't read CDs at all. PS1 games would be on a CD. Or does this only apply to music CDs?

God I really hope they will have proper emulation at (Full) HD resolution for all the PS1/2 games. Would be glorious.

It just a driver update, you can't make a Blu-ray drive that don't play CD's, it's in it's spec and Sony just disabled it.
The Media Player could probably play music CD's if it was told too, kinda like Blu-ray movies wouldn't play until you updated the system with the first firmware with the BDPlayer for it.

That's what I thought. But it just means they would have to pay extra fees for each unit they have sold and will sell right?

We know that four Star Wars games (Racer Revenge, Jedi Starfighter, Bounty Hunter, and Super Star Wars, first three are PS2 games) are coming to the PS4 with enhanced graphics and trophy support. It looks like they are just the first wave of a larger tsunami.

Trophy support?

Holy shit I'm in.

Question: Is the Star Wars set that is coming with enhanced graphics and trophy support coming as a "PS4" game or a "PS2" classic.
Not much is known about these games beyond added trophy support and "enhanced graphics"

Presumably they are not new native ports, because if they were doing that, they'd have probably picked more popular games, and not have selected only games that had a PS2 release. Enhanced graphics (if it is just higher resolution and additional filters, rather than any new assets) can theoretically be added by an emulator, not requiring any game specific work. The trophies would require game specific work, but depending on how involved the trophies are (ie for engaging in complex in game activities vs just a trophy for every level you beat), that could be not actually much work.

I would not want omission of trophies to prevent a game from releasing. I hope it is just a bonus used to encourage sales for some games, not a requirement. I would also want the entire library of classics available on o PSN for other platforms to come over, and ideally come over all at once at launch of classics on PS4, I wouldn't want to wait for publishers to add trophies. Then they can continue to expand the library with PS2 games that were incompatible with the PS3's emulator, and require trophies for new releases. That would be my ideal outcome.

If they do have any disc support, I wonder if owners of the original discs would be able to get any achievements and the graphical enhancements.

I guess I'll finally be able to finish Persona 3 at some point. It would be really cool if discs work but I doubt it will. I still have some games lying around somewhere.

In theory, if the PS5 is much more powerful than the PS4, but uses a similar architecture, they might be able to retain PS1/2 BC, add PS3 BC, maintain compatibility with the PS4 library, and then have five generations of games playable on one box.

I wonder if Sony would consider adding PSP BC. Some PSP games run great on the PS3 with custom firmware, since Sony made an emulator for Minis that you can use to play other games too.

i'm not hopeful for them adding PS3 BC until maybe PS6.

also, PSP and PSVita BC should happen in PS5 at the very least, since we know Vita wont have a successor (probably). doesn't really help me though since all of my PSP games are on UMD...

i am hoping ps1/2 are some form of disc BC, though. :(

It would be great if it was just straight up you can pop in any PS2 disc and play. I'm guessing its going to be more of just letting you play PS2 classics you already own on PS3. Which is nice.. but I'd really like to play FFXII :(

I'll be happy to be able to play games I wasn't able to because I owned an Xbox.
On the one hand, that would be a huge instant backlog. On the other hand, there's so much great stuff to discover and enjoy, I'm almost jealous.

I am totally indifferent to trophies. I just want to play the games.
That was for people who're into them. I can see a cycle of (mild) complains happening.

This all just seems like Sony remastering PS2 games with cleaned up visuals and trophy support. People are going to lose their shit when they find out they'll have to pay $10-$15 bucks to play these PS2 games on PS4.

I'd pay that much for that.

My ps2 is getting long in the tooth, and my BC pc3 isn't much better off. I'd be super happy with ps2 compatibility, I'd even pay for it as a downloadable app.

SMT Nocturne with some of the slowdown from the ps2 classics fixed up and trophy support would honestly be the greatest thing ever

If this happens wow I could replay my ps2 jrpgs without having to keep switching console.
Atelier PS2 series, .Hack and G.U, Dark Cloud 1 & 2, DQ8, FF 12, Rogue Galaxy, P3, Sakura Wars, Xenosaga, Star Ocean 3 (would be amazing considering the announcement of SO2 for ps4), Suidoken series, SMT series, Steambot Chronicles to name some from the top of my head.

PS4 would literally be the JRPG machine with past titles and upcoming titles if this happens.

I would too.

But so many people are expecting/hoping for disc enabled BC, I see so many comments like, "I should be able to pop in a PS2 disc and play". Then Sony gets accused of being money hungry and forcing people to pay for games they already own.

I'd love for them to do PS1 and PS2 remasters for PS4, but I'm expecting major backlash.

Remastering PS2 games is not a small feat. It's something you have to hire a studio to do months of work for each game, and pray they don't mess something up that makes the game run worse. If Sony's actually contracted out studios to port the PS2 Star Wars "Classics" that come with the Battlefront bundle they've gone bonkers. Better to make an emulator once and run hundreds of games on it. The PS4 can handle it, so why not?

Not saying they won't try to be jerks about pricing, but I have a hard time believing they'd actually go to the trouble to port all of these games.

I would too.

Ah, I think I see where you're coming from now. Still, they'll deserve the backlash if they don't support discs, there won't be any excuse not to.

While I don't think disc-based BC is likely, I do think digital purchases are likely to carry over. Sony has set a precedent with their classics; PS1 games being playable on PSP/Vita/PS3 with one purchase as well as Sony's huge push with cross-buy that has allowed even PS3 games to be free downloads on the PS4 even if the PS4 port was released much later (Journey, Sound Shapes, Unfinished Swan, etc.). It would really surprise me if PS2 classics purchased on the PS3 wouldn't carry over.

Disc emulation is the best form of emulation, starting with PS1 classics and moving from there.

Classics rollouts like previous renditions or the Virtual Console on Nintendo systems is a waste for a great number of folks.

Better to buy an old console and get the dics on the cheap on eBay.

I really hope it's disc emulation too. The technology is there since I've been able to do this on my PC for a couple years. The only thing holding it back would be the business side of things.

Honestly, I'd take the PS1/PS2 classics I've already bought too. Just let me play those games.

Shoot. PS2 compatibility might mean that I can finally play Ace Combat 04, 5, and 0 on the Vita using Remote Play. That'd be rad.

It would be EXCELLENT if they gave full disc-based PS1 and PS2 compatibility on PS4. I would love PS3 too, but I'll accept them having all their eggs in the PSNow basket for that.

PS1 and PS2 discs though...

While not being the same having disc based emulation too would be a way of one upping MS's BC.
Could work the same way in some respects, copy the game to the HDD and then add trophies to that data so it works together, obviously the DISC would still need to be present.

I did some digging on those Star Wars game set to be re-released on PS4. 3 of those 4 were originally PS2 games as we all know. Interestingly, all three have already released on the PSN as PS2 classics. Thing is, they were released only earlier this year, a few months before those Star Wars bundles were announced. Why would EA go through the effort of releasing them and testing them for release on PS3 if they were just gonna completely remaster them on PS4? By the looks of things, they aren't completely remastered, simply emulated to include new features.

What I found more interesting, though, is that 2 of those 3 PS2 games have file sizes below 1 GB. This is very unusual for PS2 classics. Most of them are usually in the 2-4 GB range. Even the games you wouldn't think would take up a lot of data (like Rayman 2: Revolution, for example, its original ISO files are normally in the 1 GB range on a PS2 disc) are somewhere within that threshold. But not these. Some have speculated that the reason why all games are somewhere in that 2-4 GB range is because the emulator program files are included along with the game files, as opposed to having the emulator written into the OS itself (perhaps to avoid memory restraints for the system). After all, the PS2 classic's code has been changed in order to get them to work properly on the PS3. It could be that the reason why those 2 games (Starfighter and Racer Revenge) take up less memory is that they don't include the emulator program or altered code. Maybe Sony has made improvements to their OS emulator, and that's the reason why they're included in that PS4 bundle? Those PS2 classics currently on the store shouldn't work on the PS4, since they're technically "PS3 games". But those Star Wars games are different. Maybe Sony has found a better BC solution for PS4?

This is mostly speculation, and I could be totally wrong. But I thought it was worth sharing.

That's digging deep. It is intriguing though. Can anybody refute or support this?
