What? Its plenty impressive, and considering how much more money per copy sold a dev / pub sees on PC its damn good.

Even more impressive when you remember that steam is all digital sales, they are getting 70% of the money from those sales. From what I've heard the average take on a physical copy of a $60 game is only $11.

So it's the equivalent of selling over 2 million units at retail.

It's not quite that simple though, since we don't know how many of those digital copies were sold at full price.

I would guess it's the majority (since most people aren't jumping through hoops to save some $ at Nuuvem or the like, or taking advantage of an Nvidia bundle), but there will be a significant minority of those sales at a lower price.

Really good numbers for MGSV. Konami did the right thing by releasing the PC version on the same day as consoles.

Do you have a link for that? Pretty sure it's sold just over 3million worldwide and 700k of that is on PC alone. That's not bad at all.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1118608&highlight=media+create

PS4] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain # <ADV> (Konami) {2015.09.02} (¥9.072) - 15.158 / 372.233 (-27%)
[PS3] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain # <ADV> (Konami) {2015.09.02} (¥9.072) - 11.217 / 167.691 (-31%)

What? Its plenty impressive, and considering how much more money per copy sold a dev / pub sees on PC its damn good.

PC is likely the 2nd best selling sku globally.

Exactly. Its a pretty significant chunk of sales

but you're forgetting the fact mgsv was given away with nvidia graphic cards. i bought a steam key from a gaffer myself. now i don't know how those arrangements work (nvidia paid a lump sum to konami i guess?) but it definitely muddies the picture a bit.

that doesn't appear to be true. this is a 2010 article but it says developers take home 27 bucks from a 60 dollar retail release and this doesn't account for the fact that digital storefronts on consoles are a much bigger deal now than back then so probably a small but not insignificant amount of sales were from said storefronts where they received a higher profit margin.

.

Still, the game sold 3 million worldwide and 700k of that is on PC. How's that bad for a franchise that's quite new to the platform? It's almost 1/3 of the sales.

And yes, it did come with Nvidia, but it wasn't included on 950's and i really doubt that the numbers of copies of that are more than 100k.

Of course it is. Any dev on Steam will tell you the cut is 30% for Valve and 70% for the dev.

Phantom Pain soaking up a large portion of the total sales on PC? Quite impressive considering the platform was mainly ignored by many Japanese publishers prior to Dark Souls explosive release.

Konami likely gets a large chunk of capital up front for their cooperation, they are compensated.

Some still needs to learn though. If you want success on PC, its not difficult: Makes sure your version is based on current gen one. Release it day and date and for a similar price. And if you want to make sure to get these extra sales just support basic functions: Unlocked or 60fps framerate, no resolution limit and mappable controls.

And yes, I doubt Nvidia keys represent much more than 150k. Even then, I dont hear people complaining about bundled copies with PS4.

Yeah the idea that Konami is giving away the game for free and not getting paid to bundle their game with Nvidia products because Nvidia wants to sell Graphic Cards, is really funny.

Like this is Konami, they aren't giving you shit for free. They made the money from those copies upfront, without a store taking a cut.

MGS keeps selling, Mad Max is on fire, probably those beautiful screenshots help a lot.
Nothing is quite as unexpected as some of last month's best sellers, but I wish somebody explained me why people keep buying Garry's Mod? On second thought, you better not.

I missed so many free games! Not that I don't have most but still, quite baffling.

edited: forgot to mention as it doesn't surprise me anymore but CS GO is one scary beast, that it can keep selling at this rate all the time just shows how much potential steam sales have.

those mgsv numbers don't seem that impressive given these are worldwide stats

for comparisons sake, the game has sold almost 550k in japan alone where consoles are moribund

The problem is that your expectations were unrealistic, nobody here or anywhere else expected it to perform anywhere close to as well as the PS4 version, but those numbers are still impressive nonetheless for a Japanese franchise in a non-Playstation/Nintendo platform.

where did i say i expected ps4-spec sales for mgsv on pc? and this isn't an anime histrionic tales rpg from namco, mgsv is a big budget open-world military stealth action game in franchise that's been heavily slanted towards western sales for almost 20 years.

YO, GTAV's done 3 million on PC? WOW

Possibly a lot more, that's just Steam sales. The only place to get the Steam verison was to buy it via Steam itself, where it was often most expensive. All physical copies and all other digital versions of the game were on Rockstar Social Club.

It's entirely possible that it sold more outside of Steam than it did on Steam. Here was my take on the PC sales of GTAV:

Timeline of GTAV recent sales:

May 2014 - 33 million
November 2014 - PS4/XBO version releases
February 2015 - 45 million
April 2015 - PC version releases
May 2015 - 52 million
August 2015 - 54 million

I think it'd be a very reasonable assumption that the PC version has sold at least 5 million of the 9 million copies sold since February, as that was the only new version released of it in that time frame. But personally, I would be far from surprised if the non-Steam version had sold more than the Steam version. The Steam version is full priced and hasn't had any real sales, it was often the most expensive option to buy the game. Buying the game physically and from other key sellers was a cheaper option, sometimes by a significant margin.

You are the one saying they don't count because they got bundled with Nvidia cards.

The only reason to do this in a sales thread is to insinuate that they gave them out for free or close enough to free to the matter.

To Konami it doesn't matter how they sold copies as long as they get their money. All of those Nvidia Keys were paid for in some way. And easily count as any other discounted copy of the game. With Nvida getting the discount.

WOW. Phantom Pain sales are pretty great !
Nearly 700k in a month, clearly a sign that Konami was right to release it on day and date as console releases. This should teach something to a lot of publishers.

Yep.

Will they learn tho? Probably not.

and the topic of discussion was about revenue splits and not raw numbers.

...lacks reading comprehension.
Considering the high revenue from digital, I wouldn't be surprised if revenue wise, PC is the 2nd platform for MGS V.

Steamspy does not know if ownership changes come from sales on Steam or not. MGS requires a Steam account for the physical version, so most of those 700k copies will just be activated physical copies, not digital.

Are you suggesting PC sales aren't mainly digital? Because that's like the opposite of what we know to be true. Physical PC sales are basically dead in most markets.

Most of those will be physical copies, on PC? I'm going with nope.

Also, why does it bother some people that games do well on PC? MGSV did 700k in a month, a franchise that went years upon years without showing up on the PC scene.

It's funny, you don't see this shit at this level in other plateform sale threads.

When I ask for explanations of bothered people, I get so ridiculous answers that you wouldn't believe.
It's like PC did something to them or their pets.

I thought that game selling good is good for devs and future games, but apparently PC is excluded of this equation. People, who can understand them

There is so much truth to this its unbelievable. If you want your PC version to sell well its not difficult. Make a decent damn port. I dont think day and date is super important though it obviously helps. GTAV for example has done excellent and it came out a year later.

The bigger deal is actually putting an ounce of effort into the port itself. Both MGSV and Mad Max are solid and the sales reflect that. Some devs release absolute shit ports and then complain they dont sell.

Put in the effort and consumers will respond in kind

What?

The VAST majority of PC copies sold on PC are digital via steam. I don't even know if the game got a physical release for PC.

Nevermind...

Go on. I like your posts.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
MGS1 and 2 were also released on PC back in the days but yeah MGSV did great.

His point is more that there is open-world fans buying it or console ship-jumpers/transplants buying it.

Yes, because Steam's 3/4th of sales on PC are TOTALLY from retail rurite?

hint: urntrite.

okay so rounding down the cost of mgsv per user to $50, and 30% taking that down to $35 per copy...

if 700,000 copies are sold on steam that'll total $24,500,000 in revenue. am i fucking something up there or...? either way it certainly paid to do a great pc version day and date with console.

They've done 20 million minimum in revenue in a month so yeah, no doubt worth it

Yeah I've met anti-PC people in real life before. It's like they think I'm going to reach into their consoles and break their CDs or something

I always find that estimates of profit are always way off :(
But, there's no way that putting PC out same day as console was a negative. That is definitely an encouragement for everyone to be on the same page, especially for people who have a PC and not a console.

Historically, GAF has been an inherently bad place to discuss PC gaming in general.

Steamspy does not know if ownership changes come from sales on Steam or not. MGS requires a Steam account for the physical version, so most of those 700k copies will just be activated physical copies, not digital.

PC gaming is 90-95% digital at this point.

also Knurek why have you lied about FFV? That's so not cool.

I did no such thing, just didn't exclude titles leaving Early Access or ones with some preexisting owners.
