They could actually reappropriate a lot of animations/meshes that way, elephant for wolly mammoth, etc.

Going to prehistoric would be more expensive.

They'll have to do something to keep the weaponry interesting, though.

I think just a bow as your only main weapon could work quite well actually. Throw in some basic tools like throwable/melee spears and you could have a decent little game. Whether on not it would work for 20/30 hours is up in the air though.

If that is going to be the case, it will need a bizarre timeline and other silliness, which is why I'd hope for something as entertaining as Blood Dragon rather than a normal Far Cry

You can have tons of cool loosely period appropriate ancient megafauna in a game about prehistoric man without going Flinstones and having dinosaurs.
