[Neverending story] Most Telltale games removed from iOS App Store

Apparently, the games weren't compatible with iOS9 and Telltale decided to pull those games from the store.

http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPad/The+Walking+Dead:+The+Game/news.asp?c=67776

Removed games:
You can no longer buy Back to the Future, the Hector trilogy, Jurassic Park, Law & Order Legacies, Tales of Monkey Island, Poker Night 2, both Puzzle Agent games, Sam and Max, The Wolf Among Us, and both seasons of The Walking Dead.

It seems however, that they are still in you download history, at least for now. If you own them - I think you should back them up with iTunes.

EDIT: It seems like some of the games are removed from purchase history (as was with EA games case, Bioshock and Ghost Trick). If you didn't backup them, you're out of luck.

Puzzle Agent 1 and 2 are no longer in my purchased list on iPad.

EDIT 2: It looks like there are plans to fix them and rerelease them.

Sounds like they are planning to bring them back once the iOS9 issues are fixed :

Remove if old.

Do people actually play these on mobile?

They run like shit on console (for me at least) I can't imagine these on mobile.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
ouch....thats like most of their catalog. Apple doesnt care - lets see which games will be useless with the next iOS Update.

I imagine they sold quite a bit of Walking Dead and BTTF on mobile. People don't care about performance for a casual adventure game.

iOS9 is doing a number on these games eh.

They really, REALLY should

1) block old apps by default in new version stores

2) allow developers to block future version iOSes from showing their old version apps

But then Apple wouldn't be able to say "FIVE GAJILLION APPS*"

* ONLY 1 GAJILLION ACTUALLY WORK THO

As it is, your only option to not have pissed off customers is to pull down the app entirely

Outside the little gaf bubble are people with taste interest than you. The fact they release multiple game, would indicate people are buying it to some degree.

They actually do. I played wolf among us on iPad and then Steam. They also release nearly at the same time as the Steam and console versions so they sell well no doubt otherwise Telltale would not put in any effort into releasing them.

I wonder how widespread the incompatability is/will become.

And even though it is shitty that a company pulls your purchase or if your purchase just become unplayable, I can also imagine it is financially not very feasible for a lot of devs (especially the smaller ones) to constantly update their games to suit whatever Apple is doing.

They really need to find a solution or have a clear set of rules, as I feel this can severely hamper the marketgrowth for non-free apps on the longer term (and harm the potential for more premium gaming experiences tailored to mobile/tablets with it).

Apple's utter lack of concern for backwards compatibility has gotten me to stop purchasing games on iOS. Something has to change.

I mean in situations where it's not even in download list, what happens then?

Try to get a refund from Apple! They don't have to provide one either.

What actually happens with stuff like this, policy wise? Are people entitled to refunds?

This isn't like the Bioshock situation, people who bought these can still download them, they're just not selling them to anyone else as they're broken. I can understand that, though I think it's weird they wouldn't fix TWD.

TWD ran fine on my iPhone 5. Burnt through battery at a truly alarming rate, but performance was fine.

Has this always been happening silently

Yes. Mobile games are apparently not seen as permanent by much of the playerbase so there hasn't been much vocal opposition.

I've lost quite a few games like this and I've just had it with mobile gaming.

Has this always been happening silently, or is IOS9 really just an older-game destroyer?

This has happened on both mobile OSes for a good while now. There is really no use paying for games that you want to remain in you collection on any of the app stores out there.

And yet we have people saying Mobile gaming will put an end to mobile handhelds and possibly console gaming. SMH

Ugh. That's really frustrating. I've only really dabbled in mobile gaming, apparently I should keep it that way.

But so many ipads and iphones have been sold!

... and we'll keep quoting the lifetime numbers, not the actual amount that can actually run the latest OS!

Played the first season of TWD on my Nexus 7 2013 and it ran just fine.

Just fine by tell tale standards or actually fine?

This will really hurt the growth of the mobile games market if games randomly break every update. Why does this happen anyways? Does this happen with major android updates as well?

Sounds like they are planning to bring them back once the iOS9 issues are fixed :

If you are running iOS 9 on your iPhone or iPad, we are aware of an issue that causes missing sound or causes the game to freeze during connection, or crash. Our team is currently investigating this issue, and we hope to have more information in the near future.
...
UPDATE: During the investigation, we will be temporarily removing the affected apps from the App Store while we work to resolve these issues.

Apple doesnt care -

aint tht the truth. I bought a ipod touch strictly for podcasts last weekend. It took 2 FUCKING DAYS to download the 1.4gb ios 9 update when steam would chew through that data in 5 minutes; the built in podcast player sounds like shit when you increase the speed of the audio; you cant drag and drop files; other ios podcast players do not hve free demos; there is no refund mechanism; and the non-native apps do not auto detect podcasts on the device, nor canyou set up a local feed like on android.

Yeah, hardware might be good but apple doesn't give a shit otherwise. When android is the easier, more consumer friendly choice, you dun messed up,

I read the topic wrong and tried googling to see if a Never Ending Story themed game was developed by Telltale...

But it did kill handheld gaming, it won't effect console gaming due to different needs, but handheld gaming is dying a slow death because of mobile.

3DS = 50+ million sold!
Vita was killed by Sony. It wasn't mobile gaming directly.

As I just posted, this does not appear to be the case for at least some of the apps.

Huh, well that would be bad. I'd wait to see if it's cockup/caching issue first though.

tough monkeys, youve paid & downloaded and its yours to keep, license is on your device but if the game is removed from the service that license cant be renewed so dont delete it.

edit: more examples https://help.disney.com/articles/en...-Interactive-Games-and-Services?section=Games

You can still restore from iTunes if you tell it to backup your applications too I think. Or at least that used to work on iOS8.

Sounds like they are planning to bring them back once the iOS9 issues are fixed :

Ah, that sounds pretty reasonable tbh.

This is what a quality developer does. Take notes, Capcom.

I'd love to complain about Capcom but you can't expect a developer to perpetually support a game that is no longer selling. Especially when these perfectly functional games are being broken by Apple's OS updates.

Telltale will fix this because so many of their games are affected by the same issue, and because the games are presumably still selling.

This is why I rarely buy games on the iPhone or iPad. Games that don't get updated to he latest version of iOS will break and make it unplayable :/

I don't expect them to perpetually support them, no. Nor do I expect free upgrades of PS3 games to work on PS4.

What I do expect is a reasonable support timeframe. A few years at least. Capcom and 2K have failed that expectation.
