Media Create Sales: Week 40, 2015 (Sep 28 - Oct 04)

Not sure if this was mentioned, but with the price cut, the PS4 has finally crossed streams with Wii U.

EDIT: After 85 weeks on sale, Wii U had sold 1,839,077 and the PS4 1,844,243.
That took a while. Some who predicted (and some of those who didnt predict as well for that matter) that it would happened more sooner probably didnt anticipate that so many of the PS4 games would be multiplatform and/or thought that the console marked would be more healthy, so it changed things. What was the biggest gap in number before the stream crossed by the way?

next stop PS3
It will get past a few systems at least =) Dreamcast soon, at 2.2 million or something?

Some expected drops after last week.
Tokyo Xanadu seems to have done well.
Mario maker still doing okay and Splatoon keeps going.
Kinda expected a bigger boost for the PS4.

GC one: 97,879
DS one: 160,376
Wii one (new play control): 38,573
DS second one: 138,733

I'm expecting less by this one. seems pretty average under many points of view, marketing push especially (and we saw that putting a bundle amiibo on the market maybe can help, but not that much, with Yoshi on Wii U).

We can start to say byebye to chibi-robo.

Yeah. Not expecting much for Chibo Robo numbers next week.
Poor little robo might get unplugged forever after this.

Sorry, no.

That was on their 37th week, the Wii U led by 277,406 units. Though the gap hovered at quarter of a million for the majority of that year, as you can see.

After that came the PS4's first Christmas and the gap shrinked, only to be back at 273,046 after the Wii U's second Christmas, (week 57).

Noooo. The amiibo should have helped chibi into selling millions here.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Does most of Sales-GAF feel Super Mario Maker is severely under performing?

I don't think so - I think by year-end the title should easily reach the 500k threshold.

It's a Wii U game mind you, if this were 3DS, we'd be having an entirely different conversation.

Tokyo Xandu is over 100k in Dengeki. Vita also had the highest software sales this week compared to 3DS. This is not something that we see every week.

Uncharted as I expected. The best selling for this week, yes. Lol.

Poor Chibi-Robber.

That's not what hiska's list says, lol.

Isn't Japan the weakest Amiibo region?

It's up to the west to save Chibi.

Its also not bundled anywhere but the US, and even then you don't need to buy the amiibo and the game is only 20$ without it.

Well, it was a joke. Not only you can do that, Vena. xD
Possibly not the first place, but more in terms on the biggest release it is quite possible, since I don't see FIFA doing anything at all.

EDIT: I know it's not a good metric, but on Rakuten Daily, Uncharted got the first place.

Im at Big Mario in Nakano, I was watching a CM about WE and I was wondering why showing last year commercial (cause I clearly remember it and during the spot I can see players of my favourite club which transferred to others on last summer trade time)
and in the end....

Winning Eleven 2016

my god Konami even didnt make a new CM for this year... :D

Poor Chibi-robo, good buy little buddy... :(

I have no idea why Chibi-Robo even still exists. They've never actually built it into anything other than random quirky games that were never going to be successful, and this one even less so.

Its not like Pikmin (which is my usual comparison point (however wrong it may be) as both are quirky Gamecube-era franchises) which is not only Miyamoto's pet project but also a decently performing, well liked franchise with an identity and niche fill for Nintendo's catalogue. Chibi-Robo seems to have just been some weird spectre of an IP from the Gamecube era that they have kept alive for whatever reason without ever really doing anything successful with it. They've never even really tried to grow Chibi-Robo's identity in any way.

This doesn't even feel like a "project for the new guys" type of game because, then, why even use Chibi-Robo. Why not just let them make their own idea ala Splatoon or STEAM.

What will you expect from a shotty game. It would be good if they made an adventure game as the gc version..

Well, both Chibi-Robo DS sold +140k, perhaps enough to keep the IP alive. On 3DS, Chibi-Robo was relegated as an eShop release - Zip Lash is really existing solely to sell amiibos.

Btw, Nintendo had very tough fiscal years in the recent past, their HW products suffered (especially the Wii U, of course), but they are still "beasts" among developers/publishers...

We recently had the following "charts":
JAPAN: Fiscal Year First Half 2015: First place (market share) 1. Nintendo - 32,1%
EUROPE: First half 2015: Second place (market share value) 02 (03) Nintendo - 12,57% (12,32%)
US: Nintendo was 3rd publisher in market share, I think for the first half of the year too.

They are really good and relevant, software wise, worldwide, despite their recent struggles.

While Nintendo is certainly still a competitive publisher and about six light years ahead of all the other Japanese publishers, I do feel it's worth noting that the biggest publishers haven't released all that many of their games yet in the West.

You're also mixing first half of calendar year sales for the West with first half of fiscal year sales for Japan.

For example:
EA: Has Battlefront, FIFA, Madden, NHL, and Need For Speed compared to releasing nothing in Q2 and only Battlefield Hardline in Q1.
Activision: Has Destiny: The Taken King plus Black Ops III plus Skylanders Superchargers plus whatever Legacy of the Void does at retail in Europe.
Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and Rainbow Six: Siege are their primary releases for the year and haven't come out. They're hoping for around 10 million for the first and 7 million for the latter.

I'm not sure Take-Two is releasing all that much this calendar year. Warner did release the vast majority of their output sans LEGO. ZeniMax only has one game, but it is one that could potentially do 20+ million copies.

Yeah and when development is still a clusterfuck by the time the new season starts, they might as well delay it for another year until there's another season right? Maybe move it to another platform by then! Not like anyone really cares. Lol.
At this point, it'd be pretty stupid to release it before the anime.

Oh, I agree, I wasn't pretending that they are the n°1 ww and so on...
but also Nintendo, they didn't release all their biggest gun in this window (I know it's mixed, it's just that we got these info in the recent days/weeks), like Mario Kart (on 3DS or Wii U); Smash bros, Animal Crossing main, and so on (not counting Pokemon, of course, that's Pokemon Company market share).
And also their games sell very well usually near Christmas period, due to the fact that are seen by many as "family products". Plus, it must also be said that, while other publishers have biggest games, they also have fewer games, I think, so I'd say that charts/market shares can vary depending on the "time period" analyzed, but I'd say that probably Nintendo would still be pretty relevant software-wise in any case.

If the game is actually done, I don't see why. I think you're severally overestimating any sort of sales boost from the second season of a late night anime. Kancolle is already a popular brand. What's stupid is their inability to develop any sort of port of the game in a timely manner. Kadokawa really screwed this one up.

One point, CosmicQueso had a made a point earlier in the year that Nintendo had built a solid software performance this year under everyone's noses (probably meaning through small titles, and continued sellers) in NPD. They hadn't been doing it with massive releases (which, for the most part, don't really exist this year) and Splatoon wasn't an expected success.

So there's some reason, however minor, to think that they are doing "okay" in software, despite the rather dry release year for big hitters this year has been for them.

Oh, I wasn't contesting that. Even in hard years (lots of big games from competitors, few from them) they're usually a top 5 publisher regardless.

I was just noting that ending the year at #2 or even necessarily #3 was unlikely.

What game is that?
Skyrim did over 20 million copies LTD (though I think it was only like 10-12 in the holiday season, so that's very plausible here too).

Given that Fallout 4 slotted in exactly as you would expect in the Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Fallout 3 -> Skyrim sales ascension as if it was an Elder Scrolls product, and it certainly wasn't doing that on the basis of Fallout 1 and 2's sales, I expect Fallout 4 to perform like an Elder Scrolls title.

If you look at their trailer views on YouTube, it's also behaving like an astronomically large title would (16 million for the first trailer, whereas Battlefront has 16 million and Black Ops 3 has 19 million).

Actually now that you mention it, Fallout 4 is indeed on track to be a big seller. But I'm not sure 20 million is achievable? I guess it could happen but just having a look at how 3 and New Vegas performed + looking at growth potential I think it'll fall quite short.

But hey, lets hope I'm wrong.

Oblivion sold less than those games and ended up with 20+ million for Skyrim. It was a comically ridiculous growth for the franchise.

I'm assuming this is built almost entirely into the developer's reputation, but I could be wrong. It took quite a while for Skyrim to hit over 20 million, but it was something like 7 million week one followed by 12 million at the end of the year.

I do think there's a good benefit in releasing twice as many games for one platform than half as many games for two separate platforms.

They did but they delayed it so much that now the 2nd season of the anime is just around the corner so there's no reason to not take advantage of that. At the very least, the anime's gonna remind people that the game exists and it's actually coming out. There's nothing to gain from releasing it a few months earlier.

WE bombed this year in Japan with no handheld releases to bump it up and PES hasn't exactly been charting great in Europe either. Konami also sabotaged the PC release this year so that's sure to be way down too.

I think we'll see it next year again and then it's done.

edit: Forgot about World Cup 2018. Okay 2.5 years. ;)

Skyrim flourished on word of mouth, mods, and the community it developed that spread the title like wildfire over the internet.

I don't doubt that F4 will have similar boons to its cause but it may not be as extreme because Skyrim was a perfect storm of sorts and, in many ways, continues to exist strongly enough as to impede future in some ways (especially with modding effectively making it an evergreen title in terms of content, graphics, and performance). Of course, a new title bring a new engine to mod and new options.

Then again, the whole culture of these AAA titles now is full on-hype cycles and hype-machines, so...

WE bombed this year in Japan with no handheld releases to bump it up and PES hasn't exactly been charting great in Europe either. Konami also sabotaged the PC release this year so that's sure to be way down too.

I think we'll see it next year again and then it's done.
They've spent a lot on those UEFA Champions League / Europa League licenses and have Euro 2016 too. We'll see PES at least until those expire.

Skyrim flourished on word of mouth, mods, and the community it developed that spread the title like wildfire over the internet.

It's the same engine and toolkit that the community has been using from game to game since Morrowind.

To illustrate this a bit:

Fallout: New Vegas: Owners: 3,974,633 ± 46,869
Fallout: New Vegas: Owners: 484,381 ± 16,472
(one of those two is GOTY edition)

Skyrim was at 8 million prior to its free weekend.

Fallout 3 flags as Owners: 1,868,097 ± 32,263 + Owners: 554,398 ± 17,620, but a lot of its sales were not on Steam.

They did but they delayed it so much that now the 2nd season of the anime is just around the corner so there's no reason to not take advantage of that. At the very least, the anime's gonna remind people that the game exists and it's actually coming out. There's nothing to gain from releasing it a few months earlier.

If the game were actually ready to launch for the November date, it would launch. Delaying it at this point will hurt it more than any sort of cross media benefit from the anime. What is there to gain from releasing it now? How about not losing pre-orders and retailer confidence? :p
