Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash Review Thread

Cancelled my pre-order yesterday

Decided to re-pre-order it though. Combination of having a little more income coming my way and wanting to give it a chance. My really big issue is that while someone brought up that Chibi-Robo! didn't get excellent reviews either, it was an extremely unique and visually distinct game - from both the reviews and videos of this game, it doesn't seem like it has that going for it.

CR...T? Are you suggesting he get a CRT just to play the original game?

It's probably for the best

And Nintendo continues killing off their smaller franchise under the mistaken assumption it was the characters that made the games, when in actuality, it was the game that made the characters.

A big part of why I think this game looks meh is the visual style. I really think these lower budget 2D platformers benefit a lot from being sprite-based, but apparently that's an outdated look.

This is the first time I read about this destination wheel. The hell?

This sounds like something to use in a free-to-start mobile game, with energy meters and IAP to skip the levels you already played. I really hope this is no indication or experiment in that direction.

Sad to see the reviews pointing to it being average. I did kinda enjoy the photo finder game after all.

From the videos I saw the music was generic happy-go-lucky platformer crap too. The graphics and audio should have been way more distinct given the character.

looks much better in motion on the 3ds screen, looks quiet nice imo.

People saying the amiibo would help sales: is that a joke?

How big of a base do we think has been clamoring for Chibi-Robo merchandise? How many people do went hink really want an action figure for a character that most people have never heard of?

And if we are just assuming it will sell to the people who collect every amiibo no matter what, how many of THOSE people do you think there are? Do we really think there are a million of these people combined?

These are actual questions, I'm not being a jerk here. Did amiibo help Mario Party?

I think Mario Party is different because there's been a ton of Mario merchandise over the years, and it didn't help that most of the characters already had perfectly serviceable Smash amiibos. Chibi-Robo on the other hand has had basically nothing. I know I probably would have not been as interested in getting this at launch if not for the cool amiibo.

Did people forget Knuckles' Chaotix? That game had similar level/character selection mechanics (that you couldn't evem pay your way out of) and it was still the shit. I'm willing to wait and see just how annoying this system really is.

Also, I think it's pretty much impossible for this game to be worse than Photo Finder, short of the game crashing your system or something.

I think amiibos, if seen as rare, are going to garner a lot of sales. As a "pricier" amiibo, by virtue of being for sale only with the game, in NA, I think it had potential to be a big seller because of people who are buying amiibos no matter what + because of resellers. With that said, given apparent readily available stock, I don't think this will be as huge of a seller necessarily.

FWIW--the OST is apparently awesome.

Glad it looks better on the 3DS screen in motion. Yoshi's New Island and A Link Between Worlds are two really good examples of that phenomenon. MrBadger, I'm surprised you haven't found that to hold true.

Is there any chance the amiibo will be sold separately at some point? Has Nintendo said if it will or not?

I don't think most people look fondly on Knuckles' Chaotix for that reason, among others.

It is in Japan, they've given no indication of it elsewhere.

The Amiibo is available on its own in the UK - I think someone mentioned that it's only in NA that it's exclusive to a bundle with the game.

Was tempted by the game but going to wait to hear some feedback.

As the game keeps getting more and more fun as I progress, I'm having tons of fun with this amazing game, but I feel like I don't want to go on cause of this stupid wheel shit, I can't repeat levels, I'm being force to skip levels and the game is forcing me to repeat levels I don't want to repeat, wow just wow, it's mind blowingly bad.

They haven't said and I imagine they won't because it's being primarily used as an incentive to push sales of the game.

in Europe it should be sold also separately.
EU reviews will be late, this time around, but I don't think they will be THAT different (even if with Codename STEAM they actually were: way more positive than the US ones)

Seems to be a push meant for North America, which is a bit odd, but they are handling the amiibo stuff differently here with all the bundles and the increased number of cards in the AC packs.

Honestly, I liked how a Link between Worlds looked from the start and I'm still not big on New Island's visual style. I'll admit that they look better at first, but I dunno, doesn't take me long to get used to it.

I will agree though that what I've heard of the soundtrack is really nice. But this game is still feeling like a maybe.

The GameExplain review mentioned you can just buy "1"s for the spinning wheel so that you can get to every board. Would that solve the problem?

Does the game track the boards that you've completed so you can at least see which ones you haven't done yet?

As annoying as it is, I would still recommend it, but I'm a huge Chibi-Robo fan and I love platformers, so I understand where the low scores are coming from.

To be fair, I didn't finish the first world yet as I keep skipping the level I need to finish, so I don't know if there is something that makes this process less tedious. What bothers me even more than I always 100% the games that I play, imagine having to go around and around repeating levels that you already finished cause the game is forcing you to.

On the plus side, there is a lot of exploration and cleverly hidden objects, each level feels unique with a lot of love put into it, if you love Chibi-Robo and platforming, I almost guarantee you that you will absolutely love this game, it doesn't get more adorable than collecting Mentos and feeding an airplane Potato chips in order to save the planet from an alien invasion.

tl;Dr
legit Chibi-Robo game, Mentos, Potato chips eating plane, with clever level design, ruined by level selection mechanic.

I've finished the first world and I must say I'm enjoying it so far. I feel like the destination wheel thing is being blown out of proportion because it's skill based. Whatever panel the ticker is on when you hit A to stop the wheel is the panel it will land on when the wheel stops. If you don't have confidence in your timing skills then you can just buy two 1 panels from the shop to make it impossible that you'll skip a level.

Is there going to be an OT?

kind of I guess, imagine you want to do a run of a level 3 or 4 times.
1- path 1.
2- path 2.
3- collect what you missed in a certain path.
4- Do a no damage/no check point run.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to repeat that level again with out repeating another level, you have to progress to the next level, and it seems like every area has its own secret level, add that to the mix and good luck repeating each level 20 times.

Does the game track the boards that you've completed so you can at least see which ones you haven't done yet?

It does, but for God's sake, I just discovered that it doesn't keep track of everything you've done in that level??! WHYYYYY!?

I mean, it helped sales in that I bought the game as a result.

There probably aren't many people like that though.

I hear ya. I just feel like looking back at screens of LBW, it looks absolutely dreadful. YNI doesn't look so hot either. Even if they don't look Vita-esque on the actual handheld, to me they still look a heck of a lot better than their screens imply. :)

Appreciate the info. From what I've read from the reviews, the panel/wheel issue will improve as the game goes on and you can build the wheel(s) the way you want to, to help ensure getting new levels. I'll be eager to hear your continued thoughts, the game sounds like a bit of a rough-hewn gem!

OT is coming very soon, our esteemed TheMoon is just a bit under the weather. :)

Glad to hear the wheel is not too bad, and very glad you're enjoying it, especially since we tend to have very similar taste in games!

*sigh* If they were going to make one last Chibi Robo game that no one was going to buy, couldn't they at least make it a traditional one?

Kinsei

Whuh? How is that possible?

It keeps track of the collectibles and outfit codes (although I have no clue how to obtain the outfit codes). It doesn't keep track of the bonus badges (challenges for more exp for the amiibo) since those reset every time you play the level.

Performers are an easier sell, usually. I think it was a good idea, just poorly executed.

Ah, I see. Thanks. How do you know if you got a bonus badge in a level already, then? @_@

Because it brings a lot of attention to the title that wouldn't be there without it.

I know. I just hate to see a series I loved get off on the platformer off-campus before it slams into the wall of obscurity.

We have other Mario amiibos but there is only one Chibi-Amiibo. I am really on the edge, and as far as I can see the game is good despite the wheel stuff (that hopefully will be removed).

The game most likely doesn't need to be a million seller, if they somehow can reach a few hundred thousands that would be a big success in my opinion.

There are badges in every level that are awarded after clearing the level under specific conditions, there is get no damage, use no check points and I forgot the last one.

The badges are untracked as they reset once you completed a level, they are there purely to just upgrade your amiibo which is a shame.

You are most welcome, ignore whay I said about missing whay you've done, it's amiibo related and nothing significant.

Edit:
Thanks Kensei, things are much clearer, someone should make an OT, I'd love to make one but I never did before.

Its been a long time since I played that game but I seem to recall it would always give you a new level and if you had cleared a world would stop giving you that completely. That sounds a bit different to what Chibi-Robo is offering here.

I like the character but am 100% burnt out on 2D Nintendo platformers at the moment.

Yeah they really need to let this genre rest for a bit. They are big fun and everything but I think it's been enough of 2D platformers. Oh but Yoshi's Wolly World releases next week...

It won't be. If you're really worried just hit X before you spin and buy a couple panels to make it impossible for you to not unlock the next level.

Does the game make it clear that can be done? How early can it be done as well? Would you have enough money right after the first level to replace all panels? Is the level select wheel the same for all worlds or does each world have it's own wheel?

There's a prompt in the lower left after you beat a level. Yes, you'll have the money. To get to the next level you need to land on a 1 panel and the wheel itself (at least in the first world) has four 1 panels and two other panels. The panels cost 150 each and there's way more than 300 coins per level. I haven't started world 2 yet so I have no clue if the wheel changes.

I'll be supporting this. I think it looks fun and I haven't played a side scrolling platformer in goodness knows how long (years by this point).
