Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash Review Thread

Time to bring out the bingo board!

The whining is actually warranted here. The Destination Wheel stuff that gets dragged out as a huge complaint in every review is a non-issue and should have just been noted as a weird quirk, the comments about the game being slow clearly show that none of the reviewers were using the roll button or zip lash cancel, and saying that Chibi should have carried whip length and power-ups across levels has nothing to do with anything. It's not trying to be a Metroid game, it's a level-based platformer. I don't see Yoshi and Kirby games getting marked down because there's no ability progression.

It's not a 10/10 or anything, but a lot of these reviews are really trying to make it look like boring trash when it's pretty darn solid, and the fact that people still pop in here to go "welp, looks like this game sucks" despite user impressions shows that they've got some pull.

To be fair, I don't think most people are doing a lot of this stuff :v

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
If I sorta want this, but only have the old 3ds aka no NFC reader how much would I miss not being able to scan Robo in?

Here are all the features tied to amiibo, as far as I know:

- There's a fortune telling minigame on the file select screen. "Zolfi" gives you a card with a fortune and point value on it. If it's a high point value you get a one-time use "Chibi-Smash" attack (basically a cutscene that clears all enemies on screen), and it seems to also give you higher coin payouts when scanning amiibos.

- You can tap the Chibi-Robo amiibo in the Chibi-House to unlock a vending machine, where you can pay 50 coins to get a random figure. They don't do anything, but there are quite a few and you can look at them in the Chibi-PC and read some amusing descriptions. You can do some thing where you pose them and take pictures as well. Supposedly you can also get bonus levels, but I haven't come across that yet. Scanning other amiibo gets you some coins, and will also unlock that figure's pose in the vending machine. Pokemon and third-party characters only give coins though, no figure.

- Using the Chibi amiibo in a level turns you into Super Chibi-Robo, which doubles your health and makes you faster. You can only use it once a day at first, but you can use it more often as you level up your figure. At the end of a level, you can tap the amiibo to save your point total and gain experience. A higher level means more Super uses and better figures from the vending machine.

Basically, it justifies the extra $10 with trinkets and powerups, but doesn't affect the gameplay that much. I really like using the amiibo but if you don't have the NFC reader I wouldn't worry about it.

8.5 for me, sure there are some minor annoyances and some strange design choices, but nothing game breaking or worth worrying about. The bosses are good and suit the combat well, the mechanics are varied enough throughout and progress well and it's challenging enough through the platforming. It's a shame it's getting panned.
