NPD Sales Results for September 2015 [Up2: Nintendo Numbers]

I almost never follow these threads, I just click them when there's nothing else interesting to read.
Just before you mention it and get excited about it, 340K may be a very sharp decline from 550K last September, but it is still very good for a normal September, so consoles are not dead.

What HW sales suggest is that neither consoles nor handhelds will do as well as they did last generation.

If nintendo is to have any chance, it will be through a home console. The portable market they have had a stronghold on for years is now over. They might be foolish into thinking otherwise, looking at the wii u, but i hope for nintendos sake that their new management isn't so blind.

I know one thing. With Tearaway selling like shit and DQ Heroes selling like shit ( #211 overall in Videogames on Amazon, #79 on PS4 only ) our game selection is going to get slimmer and slimmer in the future. I swear it is amazing how often threads are made around here talking about wanting diversity in products or wanting DQ to come out west or wanting character action titles or 3D platformers and when the shit actually comes out, no one buys it. Doesn't matter if it was great or not. PS fanbase used to support these types of products.

Augh. Atleast we have emulators I guess.

With these DQ Heroes numbers I'm starting to wonder if we actually will get DQXI over here. Next month we will probably see a DQ<100k cream post.

When people ask for DQ, I guess they don't want a Dynasty Warriors that's even stripped of its most interesting element (region management / control) but mainline DQ? As for 3D platformers, which I'm contionously asking for: I want fully gameplay oriented platformers. Having played through Tearaway on Vita, I certainly didn't ask for a reimagining of that on PS4. Had it been something along the lines of Banjo-Threeie, Crash Bandicoot , Yooka-Laylee, Super Mario 3D (not necessarily those exact franchises, but similarly focussed on platforming gameplay rather than being cute and charming) I'd have bought a PS4 for it.

I think Nintendo's future is in having a variety of cross-compatible devices that can play the same games as the NX purports to be. This includes both a handheld and a console. Whether Nintendo succeeds with this is the big question, yes, but the handheld market is still more important to Nintendo currently than the console market is.

Which is exactly the issue, the portable console market in the west is finished. Foolish to think they can do it again after how different the landscape is. But its likely they're stupid enough to try again.

Not really... If Nintendo just had the console, then there would be no need for any cross-compatibility.

That's more for Japan where releasing a portable still has a small fraction of a chance. The west is done on that front. Again, we'll see how things go, but I expect disaster. The Wii was also my favorite platform, so it saddens me quite a bit.

I bought my copy of DQ two days after it released at retail. I did my part! I haven't even played it yet since my girlfriend JUST got Bloodborne and I got unexpectedly sucked into that! Dark Souls didn't grab me but for some reason Bloodborne totally did.

Glad you enjoy Bloodborne, it's a fantastic game and DQH is great too. You should have great time with it after you finish Bloodborne :p

This.

I bought Tearaway myself cause I was one of those that asked Sony for a Ps4 version since I don't own a vita. Many other people asked for the port and I don't think many actually bought it. Very sad indeed. The gaming industry is following the same trend as hollywood..

True, at the same time Sony doesn't allot a big enough marketing budget for these games to at least give them the chance to do considerably well. Nintendo does a much much better job overall; from messaging to $$$ spent.

No it isn't, its just that the general gamer base is now well into their 30's, and to a lesser extent their 20's.
Cutesy kids games are all good on Nintendo consoles, or Xboxes in bedrooms, but the days of 3D platformers, and violence-free games in general, are over.

I love Tearaway and don't regret buying it day one, but it just hasn't kept me hooked until the end like a game with a more mature narrative does now.
Mature narrative? Like brain dead dialogs, patriotism, violence and war heroes? Mature narratives are almost non-existant in video games and I really don't think it is an age problem per se.

3D platformer's main problem is that they just stopped to exist outside of Mario and Sonic in 2003 (and Tearaway is more of an experience game than a platformer), it's not like the one that existed stopped selling. People just stopped making them.

The overall problem is one of demographics, but not age specifically. If you continously only promote (and release as big titles) boom-bang games, car simulations and sports games you only attract a certain demographic, i.e. male, 13-40, certain interests. Those things, sports and boom-bang are popular in other media, too, but they are not nearly as dominant, not even with that age range.

Also I'm not buying Dragon Quest. I love the series, I imported 3DS games, but I don't want to play a Warriors game with a focus on tower defense. Fuck test game bullshit. If the series continues to not release in the US then I'll continue to play the new games in Japanese.

Even with price drop for 2DS and normal New3DS bundle 3DS was down yoy. Still of course ahead in ytd sales thanks to New3DS launch in february. We shall se if it holds trough the holidays. Close race also with PSP but 3DS still should have better holidays than PSP in 2009.

It will EASY beat PSP holidays sales.

I did my part and I bought both Tearaway and Unfolded.

Hopefully Sony continues to be open about games like that.

Btw, who's going to be Zhuge's succesor and plague us with interesting graphs from now on.

I honestly think it's wasted money with titles like Tearway. The marketing costs wouldn't justify the most likely paltry increase in sales and if anything, a higher marketing budget would probably result in higher expectations for sales which the title would fail to meet.

I'm curious to know when ms shuts down the annual forza cycle. Is this game cheap or something? It's always bundled so I'm assuming they are okay with it as a system seller but they have two studios basically devoted to this series at this point. weird to me.

100k? Brace yourself for like <30k.

After this and OPPW3, it seems like westerners just don't want Musou. Well, unless it features Link, in which case we'll take a million copies thank you.

Hyrule Warriors is soooooo good. That season pass, man. Great game.

I am planning on picking up Dragon Quest Heroes as well at some point, but I'll be pretty surprised if it holds my attention in the same way HW did.

The logical decision is to kill Horizon series, studio behind them is independent, so you can have Turn 10 for a main Forza every two years.

And... there are better Musous with 10x less sales in western markets.

Afaik Turn 10 is or used to be 3x the size of Polyphony in terms of devs (as was revealed back in 2009 or 2010), so imho MS loses money on the series big time, but it's actually a matter of having a racer offering on their platform as a GT counter. At the very least for Europe I imagine.

DQH is the better game so I'd be surprised if it didn't. :p

As for Forza, it's basically just a bullet point for the Xbox lineup every year. Microsoft's first party pool is so limited that they can't really let go of Forza for even a year until they can replace it with another IP and even then I doubt they would.

Sony did cut the price in October 'specifically' to sell more consoles for the upcoming holiday season. Not to 'combat' a certain game on a rival platform.

October was the chosen month because of Halo actually.

Sure they were cutting price this Holiday regardless but they picked October to get in front of Halo and try to keep MS from building that huge mind share they are really good at doing during the holidays

And? Doesn't change the fact that HW is both great and something people are actually somewhat interested in purchasing outside of Japan. Nintendo and KT hit on a winning formula for sure.

Nintendo and Koei's... "partnership" has been baffling for a while, but it looks like it's finally produced one honest to god hit for the companies.

Don't celebrate too early Sorine ;)

I think it'll do like 50-60k.

So, with the 50$ price cut of the PS4 and the seemingly less aggressive Microsoft strategy I assume that last year's landslide MS victory is out of the question, right?

Are expectations for Dragon Quest Heroes really low? I hope it manage to sell at least 100k =(

As much as I liked Hyrule Warriors, I like Dragon Quest Heroes even more.... but I think it is doomed to 'hidden gem' status.

I really hope it does well, because I want more.

I think he is just pointing out that the only selling magic HW has is Zelda. It's not that the other mosou games are bad its that they don't have Zelda.

DQ is not a strong brand in the West.

Right... which is his point. Zelda AND a good Musou hit it out of the park. Kind of hard to replicate the former even if you have the latter.

Well, sequel is already in the works and just like HW: Legends im sure they are going to bring that one here too.

At least it sold decent in Asian market so there will be overseason version. And with that in mind at least English version of DQH2 should exist.. I think.
