No love for R-Type 3, eh? Dang.
Sorry, didn't catch you. LOVED that game as a kid. I always felt spreadshot laser was best laser.
Unfortunately, non unlimited continues and me not having the grit made me stuck in like level 5 at the boss. The one where everything is rotating. ARGH.

Hey everyone! DeltaZeal is now live! In addition to the base game, we've also released soundtracks form DeltaZeal and XIIZeal, as well as a "Shooting Love Anniversary" compilation pack if you want all the current Triangle Service games. Hope to see you on the leaderboards!

I've been playing it since purchase. The game is tough. I keep restarting every time I lose a ship. I need to just go through the game and get a feel for it.

Sunny Tam just killing it with his Danmaku Unlimited sequel.

He should let me test his game for him to make sure it's good to go. :)

Looks good. I own a couple of his games on PC and mobile.

Dumb question -- is "Sunny Tam" actually the developer's name, or a company name? And is it just one guy making these games? If it is, he's one talented dude.

Sunny Tam is his name and it's one dude. It looks amazing right now. He's got people that he'll let test his game I'm sure, but he's the sole developer. Warinside (AKA Blankfield) will be doing the music as usual. Don't know how He worked that deal out. But I sure as hell ain't complaining.

OK so that Simple 1500 series game I talked about a month ago?
It was released in September, and I've been waiting for it all this time @_@

Anyone know if this one is Vita compatible? I bought a different game that I thought was the one above, and I'm trying to get in touch with Sony for a refund so I can get this one instead if it is Vita compatible.

I still think this needs to hop on over to STEAM.

Man, I am hooked on Gradius 3 (my first game in the series) and I heard from more than one person that it's not exactly highly regarded compared to the other games in the franchise. I've been playing a little bit of 5 too but it hasn't quite pulled me the same way that 3 has, although it's also a ridiculously fun game.

Not that it matters seeing as I may never beat it. Even with the SNES' merciful slowdown I can't do much better than the seventh level.

Hahaha, at first I thought you must be a masochist but then you mentioned the SNES version. :)

The SNES Gradius III is one of my favorite shmups. I like the arcade version too every now and then when I feel like having my balls smashed with a hammer.

You can start Gradius III with up to 9 credits if you mash the A button (I think it was A but I could be wrong) really fast during the title screen.

Most of the Gradius III disdain seems to be due to its difficulty, but it certainly looks like a great game (arcade version, don't know much about the SNES version) if you're good enough to handle it.

I'm certainly not, lol. I've only cleared the original Gradius, so II is next for me.

I like Gradius 1, 2, and Rebirth. I didn't like the others too much. I like the gameplay changes in 5 (dying doesn't remove the Options and you can have the Options aim in 8 directions) but the level design killed it for me. I hate it in Shmups where you're boxed in for almost the entirety of the level and need to memorize it.

I have often wondered how much harder the arcade version really is. I can't get the absurd cheat to work so I may just have to emulate it.

Even if it's just the same game with no slowdown I'd probably be in some real trouble. As it is right now I can make it to the seventh level no problem but then I lose all of my lives to doors.

I heard about this but it doesn't really matter. The game throws lives at you as is because the developers know you're fucked if you die in the wrong spot anyway. As it is right now, I'm almost as likely to beat it on one life as I am to beat it with thirty.

Hurricane of the Varstray developer, Rocket-Engine, has released a series of new teaser videos for the game. They keep flip flopping between Valstray and Varstray. I'm guessing it's Valstray.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0qNTRVReM4&list=PL_9eKDMAXnPImH7hA-vhPkPG25DmdAb0D

Looks like it says something about December at the end of each video, but I can't understand it.

There are 5 videos in all. They've also included new screenshots on their Greenlight page. A gameplay video is said to be coming soon.

do everything in your power to play gradius gaiden. it is all things pure and wonderful about the entire series compressed into a single game. it is perfect.

It's worlds different. I mean, completely different. Not just the difficulty but the levels are different too. You're in for quite a shock if you're expecting a slightly faster SNES version!

There's tons of ways to play it but yeah, give it a try and let us know what you think. I'd seriously like to hear about your reaction to it, if you've never played it before and don't know anything about the AC version. It's like the shmup version of watching people's reactions to the first time they see 2 girls 1 cup. :D

Gradius is one of my favorite shmup series. I love them all in their own way and wish so bad that we'd get a Gradius VI. Too bad Konami sucks weiner now-a-days. T_T

I completely forgot all about Nebulasray. Somewhere in my mind I had confused it with Viper Phase-1

Wow - I used to have the PCB for this game, but wound up trading it for another shooter after a year or so. Great game with some awesome graphics.

Fairly vanilla power up and scoring system, but mad fun. I can see why you mixed it up with Viper - they are similar in that way. Viper Phase 1 is the better game imo -

Yeah, and here's another one I recall seeing EGM that I since forgot about; Nostradamus by Face.

There's a Shmup called Nostradamus? WTF?!?

Now I'm curious if there's a Shmup where you play as an Artichoke firing lasers.

Man, these two games need to get some STEAM preservation by a competent porting company.

It still bums me out that we went through an entire console generation without one Psikyo port. Not even one digital release. Strikers, Cannon Spike, Gunbird... all no shows.

Agreed. Plus, it has one of the most inspired soundtracks of the series. KCET is forever burned in my brain as a symbol of quality from that era.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT KOJI IGARASHI MADE THIS THING! Castlevania legend made a shmup. No wonder it looks so polished on those sprites!

The "K.Igarashi" credited on this game is not IGA: they have different first names and IGA was busy at Konami at this point, and he was never a pixel artist, anyhow.

The guy who worked on this game is notable in his own right, though: his name is Kouzou Igarashi and he did pixel art/character design for Taito games like Ninja Warriors and Cadash.

Nostradamus was released by a company called FACE that's probably best known for the versus puzzle game Money Idol Exchanger.

WOW! This thing was amazing in that video. Is it on the Wii's shop maybe? It had a ton of stuff...maybe we'll all get lucky here :D

That game never got a port to any home platform, gotta play it emulated.

Another one that did not make it home: Dogyuun

At least you had the good sense to palate cleanse that Nostradamus garbage with a Toaplan classic.

Note that for shmups on mame there is an active project on shmups.com re a special recompile of mame to better emulate shmups (i.e., reduce the lag that's currently in mame). That and the decrypting of audio for various Toaplan shmups means the last year has been pretty incredible for PC shmup emulation (although the PCB is still where it's at but that's both expensive and takes up space while emulation is quite good and your PC is already there - add a proper stick and you're very good to go).
