I've recently moved so setting things up again is the perfect opportunity for me to tackle better cable management. It's a battle I somehow lose in the end, but one of these days I'll figure it out.
I don't want this again, which started out clean, labeled, tied up, but over time just got out of hand as I changed stuff around, added new things, removed old things, etc.
So this is the result of three days work (one for research, one for planning, one for what you see here). This is all the power cables plugged in, tied up, and power bricks hidden. So this is the current state of my gaming setup and I think I'm off to a good start.
Today I have all new Ethernet cables and HDMI cables coming. They are of varying lengths to minimize excess cables which will hopefully help reduce the chaos. I'll post a pic with hopefully good results.

Wow, that's a nice job. Reminds me that I need to do a complete overhaul of my entire cable management soon. I fear the amount of dust that must have accumulated over time in that part of the room.
The way it looks on your picture is superb, but where do you have the non-power cables running? I don't see them in the second pic.
Seems kind of redundant a lot of those things? That may have been the thing that caused your original issue in the first place.
But good job organizing all of your cables. How are you handling your speaker wires as that's always the hardest to hide without running through walls or between baseboard.

Thanks! The non-power cables aren't done yet. That was just doing all the power cables. I had new HDMI and Ethernet cables arriving today and I'm working on that right now.It's coming along pretty good. I was just about done when I realized I had hooked everything up except for the HDMI cable going from the TV to the receiver which of course is the most important one. So I just opened everything back up to lay that out. I also made one miscalculation which I'm going to have to correct, but it'll do until the replacement cables arrive. I'll have pics up soon of today's work.
Those actually weren't the culprit of a lot of the mess. They also each serve a purpose. The Chromecast is so I can easily push something to the screen from a tablet or laptop. The Blu Ray player is well for Blu Rays. I thought my HTPC would replace that aspect, but man Blu Ray software in Windows sucks a ton. My HTPC used to be my main XBMC and Steam box, but the Fire TV has replaced it for XBMC and streaming services as my daily driver. I still keep the HTPC around for the few files the Fire TV can't play in XBMC, and still for Steam PC gaming. Each one has their own strength so I'm keeping them around for now. I'd love to trim it somehow though.
As for the culprit of the mess, the last time I wired everything at the old house, it was when I was still using a PS2, Xbox, Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360. So when the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U came out, I retired the PS2, Xbox and Wii. The kicker is that generation didn't have HDMI so I had a lot of component cables intertwined in and then laying out new HDMI cables for the current gen on top of that just made things a mess. I also had a more complicated setup where I was using DirecTV and having that split direct to the receiver and going to the Xbox One. I also had the receiver's second HDMI output going to another room to hook up to another HDTV. So I've trimmed out some of that and got rid of all the component cables. I also had a headphone setup which worked only through optical and the only optical switch I had was a huge component video switch that I used to use. You can see it in the first picture as it's propped face down, rear up, leaning against the wall. Sadly you can't find small optical auto switches, and heck even most optical switches are friggin expensive. I've only recently found a manual small switch that I'm probably going to replace the big box. I'm even contemplating not hooking up the headphones at all.
As for your last question about speaker wires, I don't have a good plan yet. In fact, I'm kind of dreading it a bit. I kinda wished I had the contractor add in speaker wire ports, but at the time I didn't have an idea where anything was going to go exactly yet. Sadly, I bet it's going to be a less than elegant solution. At my old house, I just ran them exposed against the baseboard. Since the speaker wire was white, and the baseboards and carpet was white, it didn't jump out too badly. Given my new setup, I still have white baseboards, and if I ran it around at the bottom exposed, it'll mostly be behind things so it won't stick out too badly. I'm still open to suggestions for that though.

Ok, so here's the update I promised.
So one of the problems from my previous setup is I just used whatever Ethernet or HDMI cables I had around. In the beginning I tried to at least get color coded ones so I could easily see where they went, but they were never the right length. So I decided to drop $50 on all new Ethernet and HDMI cables where I had measured the approximate distance I would need and bought a cable length that was as close to that as possible. The expected result was the cable would pretty much run the length and there'd be very little to tie off which in turn would reduce the amount of clutter.
Another thing I found were these great inexpensive neoprene sleeves for cables. There are two types that I picked up. The first is 40" in length has two slots about every inch, and embedded velcro straps on the inside throughout the length. The slots make it so that you can lead a cable out at any point along the 40" line and the velcro straps in side help you tie the cables together on the inside, before you seal the sleeve. It even has a way to mount it along furniture if you want to, but I didn't think the need so far. That came in a pack of two for $13. The second type of sleeve is 19" in length, and instead of velcro to hold it together, it uses a zipper. This is non slotted and comes in a pack of 4 for about $14. I ended up using only one of each. I have the 40" running along the center behind my TV stand and then as soon as that one ends, I use a 19" immediately after which crosses from my TV stand to my receiver rack. In between that is my right channel speaker. The idea is you'll only see a single black bar going across rather than a bunch of wires so it looks cleaner.
I mostly got the lengths right, but I miscalculated on two. I got two 2 ft HDMI cables, but I think I needed two 3 ft cables instead. It's a bit tight and not in the position I thought it would be in. Other than that, tonight's job is pretty much complete except I still want to do some clean up, velcro strap together cables in a few spots, and position things a bit better. Behind the receiver is getting a bit ugly, but still not too bad. I'm going to sleep on trying to figure out how to make that look neater. The remaining stuff is hooking up the speakers, subwoofer, a few usb cables, Kinect, PS Eye and a few other final things.

Overall, a huge step up over what I had before while retaining almost all the functionality. A few things aren't there yet. I'll post another update once I make more progress.

Here is a picture of how it looks today. Yesterday I started to put some games on the shelves. I don't know if this will be how it will look like in the end as I may change some games to another shelf so that I can fit almost everything without having to do a second line of games.

That is what I'm planning to put in the future.
I already spent a lot on the shelves and the glass and so I decided to wait a few months to get the library ladder. The only thing that I worry about the library ladder is if it will roll ok on the carpet.

The hard part is gonna be connecting it all (this shot is just for showing off). And I just put some games and stuffs around to dress it up a bit, but this is far from the end-result. I'm gonna be hooking up all the consoles in the next few weeks if I can find the time. Hope you guys like it. When my game room is fully done (it's getting there) I'll post a lot more pictures, but I thought I'd show this off as I think it came out really nicely.
@Galdius: Awesome shelf. One question, did you have a plan of what goes where before building it? Judging by the place holding the 360, I guess you at lease had some sort of a partial plan.

I absolutely loved your old game room. I can't wait to see the new one. You have an amazing collection and I always looked your posts and wanted to have something similar.
Yes, an architect designed the shelves and she told me where to put each type of game and how many it would fit but for now I'm not following the arrangement she made.

Most of them are gonna be hooked up, yes. Some of the consoles are just spares though, but they fill up the shelf, like the Master System (I'll be using the power converter on the MegaDrive for RGB image), N64 (not a lot of worthwhile games imo), MegaDrive 2 (my Megadrive 1 is 60Hz and regionfree modded), PS1 (can just play PS1 games on the PS2).
I have a ton of outlets behind the shelf and AV-cables are going behind the TV (the red part behind the TV is a thin double wall that I can easily remove, it's to hide most cables).
I keep my controllers seperately. I just grab the controller I want to use at that time.

I would move all the systems with the wired controllers to the bottom and leave the top only for 'wireless' systems.
You will have to rearrange a few to handle the power adapters also. Some of the top loading stuff (esp if you want the 32x hooked up) will be a little wonky on box shelving systems.

This was just a quick set-up and by no means final, but thanks for the tips! I'm gonna be doing all that soon though (not really looking forward to it...) The PS3's on top are not gonna be hooked up as is the Megadrive there, so wires won't be an issue. Still, I'd like some kind of structure to it and not mix and match too much.

House is getting the floors done, I actually like this setup.
Building a new place starting next month, preliminary stuff is done.
Most importantly, the living room. I'm making a few custom panels for connections. I currently have a panel planned for behind my entertainment setup (PC, consoles, wall mounted 55" TV). This has HDMI, USB, LAN and routes to the TV (sockets behind the TV, no visible cables), and USB 3.0 and HDMI through the walls to a panel in another room where I have a desk and monitor for non-couch PC work.
I have one panel left, to go next to the sofa in the living room. What should I have on it? USB? GameCube ports? Any other ideas?

If it's not too late, I hear one of the things to best futureproof yourself is to have at least 4 cat6 ports running there. In the future, you could use it for video distribution through HDBaseT which will run over your cat6 wiring. I added four ethernet ports to any spot I thought I might want to use for distribution in the future.
Thanks! It's taken a lot of failure to get this far. Hopefully I can figure out how to make things cleaner behind the receiver.
Oh yeah I have a pack of CAT6 stubs. I'll use them.

Living in a small studio in Seattle. I had to pack everything in extra tight so it didn't take over the entire room.

Dont you have issues with you PS4 overheating?
If I put it in a closed closet (more spacious than that one) it seems it is getting ready to take off and gets WAY warmer then when I give it some air.
Never ridden a Rossi only Lib/GNU, might have to try one out. If you are looking for bindings I stumbled upon a new company called GCW bindings. They make some sick custom colors and are manufactured in the US.

No, I put some small screw mounted fans on the back of the cabinet for the consoles from the home depot.

My fiance and I are going to be moving into our new place soon, and we have agreed that the basement will be the gaming setup area. The basement is only partially finished, but the non-finished area is completely separated.
The space is decently sized but oddly shaped. In debating which wall I wanted to setup the TV on, I thought about setting it up in a corner instead, to allow more seating with a better viewing angle for everyone who comes over to play local multiplayer games.
Any tips on a good corner setup for the TV and consoles? I haven't bought any furniture yet, starting from a blank slate.

that's really sexy and nice but I would replace the PS3's with old game boys or something. They are HD console and you wouldn't really want to play them on an old crt, unless they are just their for show. Or is this your main setup?

As I've said, this is just temporary, I just wanted to show the shelf off. I was actually thinking of putting some handhelds there. I don't really have a place for the PS3's right now so for now this'll have to do. My modern consoles are all hooked up in my living room, but there's not really much space left there for more consoles.

Also you should build one of those ladders like you see in the old timey library's. It'll look pretty cool methink.
