Destiny celebrates the best Holiday season - Festival of the Lost

Path of Exile, a completely F2P game, charges less for their dance animations. That's a game that was crowdfunded, and the entire project was reliant on optional, unnecessary, completely cosmetic items that no one has to buy.

Destiny is a full retail game with multiple paid expansions already, created by a publisher with deep pockets that doesn't need to gouge already-paying customers for optional cosmetics to release 'seasonal events'.

I don't understand how anyone can defend publishers doing this.

EDIT - Evidently, the only response to criticism of a fan favorite is snark and dismissal. Cool community.

This is beyond apples and oranges.

This is like apples and rocks.

This Halloween event is like the least objectionable thing Destiny has done this year.

And anyone reasonable would think that would make criticisms against this publisher even more viable... but looking at this thread, holy shit. This is either outright fanaticism or people willing and eager too get price gouged.

I don't follow Destiny outside of glancing over threads regarding how awfully it was produced, with cut content galore, all for the purpose of re-purposing it for piecemeal sale.

Optional cosmetics to fund game development.
Optional cosmetics to wring money out of customers.

I guess you're right. One is a nice, the other breaks your teeth.

People talking about dances again...
This stuff is just great and funny. Alot of people now with Crota mask in the crucible haha. Just fun that Bungie does this. Nothing more.

Are you seriously just telling us you are a drive-by poster, right now?

You've way over-simplified this entire thing.

You're comparing end results when the paths to get there are just as important. There a tons of variables to consider here.

Also, you're basically white-knighting people who want to spend money. You are literally defending people who don't want your defense. You have two groups right now. People who aren't going to buy these items, but enjoy the benefits of them being for sale. And then people who are going to buy these items, because they deem them worth the cash.

You are defending the second people, who don't even want to be defended. If they wanted to be defended, they simply wouldn't buy the items.

I don't see an issue with this week's event. If you don't want to pay for the emotes, don't buy them.

Basically this, its anti-consumer if you require the user to pay for getting the best items in the game. If its entirely cosmetic, then the stuff added today is no different to Path of Exile, and arguably cheaper as PoE has supporter packs ranging up to $1000 with unique cosmetic sets attached

Which, now that I think about it, describes TTK leaving base game owners behind, I imagine people who brought the base game are left in the dust now. Though, it makes more sense if you think of the DLC as the monthly subscription fee I suppose.

Welp, maybe this makes me a terrible person, but I don't care because I've played hundreds of hours of Destiny and Halloween themed video game events are my favorite thing in the world, so I feel no shame about buying $20 worth of Silver to buy all three emotes and three of the mystery bags.

It's just a fun little holiday event with a few optional paid cosmetic items. It's really not that serious.

If I ever see a thread titled "Bungie saves 50 puppies, finds them good homes" I will enter just to see all of the people who so aggressively hate Destiny complain about it and call it disgusting. It never gets old.

"Activision must have let those puppies lose and Bungie just saved them for PR reasons"

"FIFTY puppies???? How much they gonna charge for THAT huh? 20$ again? I don't think so!"

"I only ever played 1 hour with a puppy. I knew I never wanted to do it again when all it kept saiyng was "Woof""

Has there been any extra word on the free content being similar standard to previous paid for dlc? Is all paid dlc done now until destiny 2? Or do we not know for sure?

I might come back after im done with fallout if I can have all the future destiny content subsidised by people buying emotes.

Dont know for sure. But the rumor started with that emotes came etc and that was correct. And in the same article they said they want to earn money that way so dlc contents would be free.

Bungie hasn't officially announced anything.

We did get a brand new PvP map today for free.

I think this is the plan:

People buy emotes and we get stuff like new quests, free maps and whatever for free.

I do not think that anything like TTK will ever be given out for free but stuff like HoW or TDB? Who knows :D

I understand that. You know what was another fun DLC celebrating an event?

$2 for the iconic Back to the Future Delorean, with unique boost, spark, tire tread, and explosion effects.

I see this, for 3.5x the cost and evidently I'm in the wrong for thinking it's wrong. Evidently, cosmetic items shouldn't be priced cheap. Evidently, they should be more expensive. Fuck me for thinking otherwise. Clearly, my complaints are attempts at defending some group of people and white knighting some cause. I was under the impression I was just pointing out a slippery trend of greedy publishers, and I do find that to arouse indignation --- it's literally disgusting.

But, let's all jump on the person who thinks a profitable-as-fuck game doesn't need to charge so much for fun little charms. Heaven forbid anyone dislike unnecessarily high prices.

$7 is not a lot of money to people.

"But another game that you aren't even interested in sells dances for not as much money!!! Disgusting!!!"

"Well yeah, I like playing Destiny and not some other game. I love Thriller so fuck it."

I mean, they are also giving us 17+ cosmetic Halloween masks completely free, not to mention new themed quests associated with the masks, a new PVP map and a decorated/holiday themed Tower. This event is far more than just a single $7 dance.

It seems more like you are just making general Destiny complaints in the guise of complaining about what seems like a pretty harmlessly fun holiday event.

Trying to make like-for-like comparisons of cosmetic/DLC between completely different games serves no real purpose. The only thing that can really dictate what the price of a cosmetic item should be is that specific games economy as dictated by what players are willing to spend. Where does stuff like $25 mounts/$10 pets in WoW fall into the discussion? Or $10 announcer packs in DOTA 2? If players aren't willing to spend $7 on a dance emote in Destiny, you can bet comparable dances in the future will be cheaper. Item prices in other games are almost irrelevant.

You do not have to buy this item! If you don't buy it, nothing happens to you.

You do not blame the city of new york when you see someone hail a cab, and you're using the subway.

It is their right to spend their money.

You've totally missed the point, as others have covered. Bungie is only going to ever sell cosmetic items, with which they will fund events like this and the MP map they released. You miss out on nothing by not spending the money, and the people who do are doing so because 1) they want them an/or 2) they want to fund this model for Destiny in the future.

You're getting "jumped" on because you decided $7 for a cosmetic item was "disgusting" which is a hilarious word to use in the context of a videogame, then immediately doubled down that the community was snarky and dismissive. Then you completely ignored all of the other FREE things this update gives players (17 or more masks, new PvP map etc), made comparisons to PoE which is hilarious as others have pointed out given that you can spend up to $1000 real US dollars for cosmetic items in that game (is that disgusting?). Now you're doubling down again with all kinds of hyperbolic words and phrases that literally no one in the thread is using. I'm going to be nice and assume you're just trolling, in which case fantastic job.
