Well we've been all over the place this year in sales predictions. From 2m PS4 (YTD not LTD) to <1m, from Splatoon being lucky to sell more than W101 to >2m, etc.

We've been on one hell of a rollercoaster.

Not that it really matters, the 3DS is the only thing actually keeping the software market afloat outside of mobile. :p Its kind of like the last loser battle everywhere.
True that :) It shows how hard it can be to do more long term predictions like that. Thats why i think its fine to be wrong about such predictions. I also really like when things see more a more positive result than expected, like Splatoon. Gives a more positive reaction :) More sad when its the opposite way instead, when higher sales are expected, but it ends up selling less instead :\

And just for clearification, i dont think that focusing on negative thing is always due to bias of course, just to underline that. But in some cases it kinda look like it to me. The market is much slower after all, so it can also be realistic to expect lower sales, no doubt.

I wonder, could PS4 sell over 2 million next year? It has some big games at least and price is lower.
I think that would be hard. I expect the PS4 to sell about ~1.2 million this year. If it can match that next year, it will be a good result i think.

You'd need a considerably bolstered baseline from the current and one that the price drop has failed to provide. You'd need an average of ~40k per week and unless you plan on releasing MGSV every other week, this seems highly unlikely.

Yeah, now that I think about it more 40k per week average would be hard to achieve. Software wise PS4 has some quite big games like Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy XV(hopefully!), Persona 5, Yakuza 6 but those alone won't be enough.

While not exactly 2 million PS3 did 1.8 million in 2009 and its weekly sales for most of the year were between 15-30k. Slim launch and FFXIII launch week were the biggest reasons for those high sales. 2016 for PS4 depends on how much heavy hitters like FFXV and DQXI will push hw during their launch weeks (and does those games even come in 2016) and will there be similar hw refresh to Slim. Next year for PS4 is pretty unpredictable. Obviously I still don't think that it will hit 2 million either though.

Wii U finally under 10K, but will go back up in a few weeks with the Splatoon bundle. PS4 doing okay, but still dropping, wonder what the baseline will be post-holiday. Oh, and Squids finally under 10K, doomed!

And wow at Legend of Bomba FlopForce Heroes, 40-60% sell-through, thank the holidays that it will likely sell it's first shipment.

Splatoon so close to outselling Mario Maker in the weekly charts despite having double sales. Is next week finally the week?

Also, why arent these ~10k new wii u owners buying smash? :(

Outside of that DQ bundle week PS4 sales were pretty crappy last holiday season. From week 43 last year it took to the week 50 that PS4 sold more than it sold this week . Even with that DQ bundle week PS4 will easily made up for it during other weeks this year. Maybe 1.4 million is tad high but it should hit 1.3 million.

You're right, i made only two minutes ago a fast revision of my predictions... change my prediction with 1.3 million. :p
Still under 1.4 million thought. xD

I still find this incredibly impressive that a remake sold that well compared to the original. OOT 3D actually sold about the same as Majora's Mask on the N64 too

Format might help.
If there's a Twilight Princess remake, it'll be on NX handheld as well (imo).

Well I said in original post that it wil sell somewhere between 1.3-1.4 million so if PS4 ends up selling 1.301 million I was technically right. ;)

New handheld Zelda releases and even that couldn't move 3DS units. PS4 outsold 3DS this week despite new handheld zelda. I can't believe it. Hopefully Nintendo has big plans for mobile

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
In a few hours, we should get Famitsu Top 10 digital and Top 30 digital + retail for September too. Quite interested to see digital sales for several titles.

Ignoring the issues with this Zelda entry, this is a platform that's been around the saturation point since this time last year, but was revived by people upgrading to the New 3DS.

Nice for PS4. Coupled with the western releases, it should see some notably good weeks in a bit.

You betta werk with that bump over 1K, X1!

MGSV should be ~660K LTD including digitial, right? Solid (I am sorry) legs.

Zelda...yeah.

Splatoon and SMM doing what they do best.

Surprising to see Uncharted still...charting (I am sorry again).

Ouch at that Neptune spinoff. Thought it would do better, like 50k but that is way off.

Aww, not my Kuni is out of top 20 too. Ah well, at least that is coming west. Where is the Tokyo Xanadu western release announcement *shakes fist*.

Are we at the point where 20k a week is considered good?
Depends on how you choose to see it. Its been a while since 20k a week for consoles have been the norm. It seems unlikely that this will change noticeably for the better anytime soon. It can be seen as both good or bad.

Yeah. Wii in 2008 was pretty much last time home console sold regularly over 30k every week.

There's a very high possibility (unless I am forgetting upcoming releases) that we're back sub-20k within the week or one after given the current decay rate and the old baseline/soft-drop.

The real sad thing is that there's a decent chance the PS4 will be the market leader for the foreseeable, even with sales that shitty.

The real sad thing is that there's a decent chance the PS4 will be the market leader for the foreseeable, even with sales that shitty.

Hardware isn't much of a story in this regard as the only competition to this position is a system at EoL and facing severe market saturation.

Software is the bigger thing and, as it stands, the PS4 will not be the market leader there ever and isn't much of a leader even in the fair-comparison-bracket where it and the WiiU and Vita are all within a stone's throw of one another. There's no sustainable market in that bracket even if you were to combine all three.

Its effectively a comparison of the sprinting capabilities of a homeless 20y-o vs. a very wealthy 95y-o.

It's interesting with the Vita because it seems to have many, many, many more games releasing for the system in comparison to the PS4, yet it still sells less total software even when having a larger install base. The PS4 has had barely any games released for the system that actually sell well, and if it does get games that sell well, they've almost always been on the PS3 or Vita, or even both. The PS4 really hasn't been given a chance to show that it can sell software on its own, mainly due to games being released on platforms that already have a well established install base.

That's the thing though. The dedicated industry probably isn't sustainable at all at this point and it's only going to get worse.

23./22. [3DS] Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.06.11} (¥5.076) - 2.408 / 501.725 <80-100%> (-30%)

finally over 500k

[N64] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo) {2000.04.27} - 314.044 / 601.539
[3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (Nintendo) {2015.02.14} - 236,536 / 451,990

I still find this incredibly impressive that a remake sold that well compared to the original. OOT 3D actually sold about the same as Majora's Mask on the N64 too

[3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo) {2011.06.16} - 182.998 / 600.839
yep this is quite impressive and people are doubting zelda IP

3ds will sell more for the remainder of the year thanks to the holiday, but early next year i could see both doing pretty simliar numbers now that ps4 is cheaper and all of the 3ds' leggy games aren't pushing hardware like they use to

There's a very high possibility (unless I am forgetting upcoming releases) that we're back sub-20k within the week or one after given the current decay rate and the old baseline/soft-drop.

I would not be so sure. Well next two weeks are the ones where PS4 could go sub 20k . After that it starts to get some releases ( for example COD and SW) and seasonal effects start to raise sales for all consoles.

PS3 was market leader for the most of last gen (even though Wii beat it in ltd because of very strong start) and it's not like PS3s baseline was that much higher for the most of time. This is just the reality of modern home console market and has been for some time.

Edit. If you meant market leader in terms of home consoles. Handheld NX will be obviously the overall market leader for deticated gaming devices after it launches.

Actually Wii yearly LTD was above PS3 LTD from 2006 to 2010 (or was it from 2007? What was PS2 YTD in 2006?).
PS3 was above the rest of the home consoles from 2011 to 2012 because in 2013 WiiU YTD was higher.

Oh you are right. Somehow remembered that PS3 beat Wii already in 2010 and didn't remember to take WiiU in calculations. Dat holiday effect for Wii back in 2010 lol.

A good hold for the PS4, maybe it has settled into new higher setpoint for sales after all. I was doubtful initially

so many asked and anyone replied

XBO got a 3x bump from the previous week and anyone knows the reason

last week they were released FIFA16 (only digital) and the hyper huge massive Halo 5 limited (24,000yen)

today Halo 5 will be released, limited edition bundle also, if last week XBO was around 1,000 units can we expect this week above PS3 ?

Zelda did ok. Its legs is going to be the real test. It's a game that might sell 50% of ALBW and that's ok for a spin-off, especially since we know now that the 3D versions of Zelda is preferred.

Very interesting to see Nintendo's discussion on Splatoon in this investor's meeting, and the discussion therein of how a single piece of compelling software can change winds quickly.

Splatoon didn't really change winds, it just made the wind stir a little bit.

Also, Halo 5 bundle came out in Japan on October 22th, so says the xbox site.

so leader that it took 7 weeks (half December) to pass Wii week 1 (330k)

so leader that after 1 year (half December) Wii was at 4mln and PS3 at 1,6mln

so leader than after 2 years (half December) Wii was over 7mln and PS3 at 2,5mln

after 3 years (half December) Wii was at 9mln and PS3 at 4,2mln, how many years until the "strong start" will finish?

we have different way to define a "market leader" and a "start" ;)

Well I was defining market leader by years in which the home console was the best selling one. Obviously after 2008 in total ltd sales Wii had pretty huge gap to PS3 and it still grew a little bit in 2009 and 2010. After that obviously things went differently as the two consoles ended ''only'' 2.4 million apart from each other. And yes even by my own definition I was wrong like Celine pointed out. =) Original main point of this conversation was though that since end of 2008 weekly sales of 20-30k have been pretty normal for market leader in home console space in Japan.

Interesting from Nintendo, I can see Miitomo working well in Japan, as a communication tool (not in terms of IAP).
Will be bad for DeNA until they announce their next game though.

So there's this Miitomo thing and then paid apps.

All right, I'll just file their mobile strategy into the garbage for now.

Corporate Management Policy Briefing / Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ending March 2016 - Oct. 29, 2015

In May, we globally released Splatoon for Wii U as a completely new IP. This is a 4-on-4 online combat game in which players skillfully switch between “squid” and “human” character forms while they compete to cover the largest part of the battle area in ink. We were able to receive high commendation from many consumers regarding the fun of playing this brand-new and unique game only Nintendo can offer.
In Japan, the combined sales figure of its package version and download version surpassed 905,000 units as of last week and we are certain it will reach a million within this year.

I filed the first effort into that bin ages ago. Niro's not impressed.
