Greetings Everyone!

Yes, we are in the third month of development of Shenmue 3. The story and scenarios are now out of the planning stage and it is time to get the people, places and things to start fitting together into a world with proper dimension, adequate space, and appropriate scale to keep the feel and essence of all that is a Shenmue game.

Map Testing

In this phase of the development, the major work being done is the map testing. Map testing will define the different areas to make sure they are neither too big, nor too small to get to that Goldilocks zone. This consists of looking at the layout of a certain space, and experimenting to make necessary alterations. For example, an outside area may feel too open. That space may be reduced by 20%, and the number of people there increased from 10 to 16, to affect the proper consistency and density of the area.

All elements in the following screen shots are still in testing. Objects are being used as place holders, like the men in black suits, and Ryo is also an older model. Backgrounds and buildings are also still in the development stage and will see reworking. Shots for the two battle scenes were taken at angle to avoid spoilers as much as possible.
The development team is in high spirits now that we have reached this stage where we are finally able to start testing. The studio has become quite the lively place as of late, even on Saturdays for some of us! We look forward to your continued support!

Well, it has a good shot at coming out before FF15 at this rate. Looking good though. Hopefully the HD ports come out before this so I can check it out.

Really disappointed that this isn't getting a full AAA budget. This is almost surely not to meet my expectations.

I just got the email update. I knew Gaf would already be on this. Also the model of Ryu is much better than what was originally shown.

Why would this get an AAA budget lmao

I'm struggling to understand how an open world game can be great without a large budget. Is there a precedence for this? If they have to cut too many corners then I'll be extremely upset.

Shenmue has never been open-world in the same sense as Skyrim or a GTA.

Two of those shots seem to be using the default UE4 environment used in the matinee fight scene demo, so they must not be far enough into designing their environments to feel comfortable showing those off...which is more than understandable give it's only been in development for 3 months, but goddamn it I wanted to see how their environments were coming along haha.

Still, loving how those screenshots are coming along. Seeing Ryo in anything but strangely specific Dreamcast-era quality graphics is so surreal to me, I'm super in love with those screenshots.

Yakuza 0.

Keep the open world small but fill it with tons of stuff you can do.

Have you played Shenmue recently? It's not nearly as big or open as a modern open-world game. It's a relatively small but dense town.

Shenmue is not trying to be todays modern AAA open world game. its a very different kind of game...

I hope they have plans for us that have not played the previous games.

A japanese guy was streaming Shenmue on PS4 just yesterday. He was at the part where an old man taught him a move at a park. It looked good and I'd like to experience it.

Can't wait to see the updated Ryo model.

Also, the comment section on the KS is god awful. Does it get that bad for most games?

From the article.

It's not going to be a sprawling open world game. Which sounds like a good thing to me.

Because, you know, previous Shenmue had one.

Yeah except it's almost 2016, the market has changed, and anyway the overbloated budgets of the other games is why there hasn't been a Shenmue 3 till now. With help from crowdfunding.

Am I the only one who prefers the original DC graphics?

The originals had a very authentic arcade-y AM2 look, which this third chapter totally lacks, sadly. I can't think how such an approach would work in 2015, but hopefully we'll get to see one day if VF6 ever turns up.

Why would this get an AAA budget lmao

Because the first games had AAA budgets.

Yeah. Games development has gotten more expensive, and inflation means you get far less bang for your buck than you did in the late '90s. Expect this game to be a teeny tiny fraction of the Shenmue experience we're used to.
