Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

God of War & Bend.

Cory's not the most subtle guy out there, but he's also someone who's in-touch with the community, fans, and doesn't bullshit around. I can really feel his excitement on the new GoW project, and I'm relatively confident he's got what it takes to blow skeptics away with the new God of War.

Bend. Personally, I'm not 100% sure what to make of them, but this is the first time in forever that they've been allowed to presumably make a new IP, a console game, and allowed to stretch themselves significantly for the first time in forever. If there's ever a time for talent to shine beyond the limitations of the publisher/platform, etc... It is now.

Yeah, as others have said, GoW is almost a lock to make an appearance at Sony's own personal event. Additionally, after recent momentum, I hope VR has a good show.

Otherwise I'm going in with low-ish expectations

The new god of war and bend game, also level 5 and studio japan rpgs.

You really think they're going to announce 4 AAA games at PSX? Absolutely no chance. GoW4 and Bend's horror game plus one or two smaller titles (Queasy's third game?) would be more than enough.

Then at E3 they can announce Level 5's JRPG, Bloodborne 2 and inFamous 4.

Level 5 president said earlier this year that they were going to announce their ps4 rpg at e3, but they didn´t, so maybe they do it at psx.

Maybe. Or maybe at Level-5 Vision 2016.

Why? What's the rush? PSX is the smallest of their four conferences, there's no reason to blow their load at it. Sony have already shown they'll delay announcements for almost a year with Bloodborne, so I think we'll see the same thing with this game.

As far as I remember, Level 5 only ever show their self-published games at their own events. Their Dragon Quest's and Sony published games have never appeared there.

I guess we could see that other PS4 exclusive that Verendus teased they were working on but who knows how far that is into development.

Well, SCE hasn't really blown their load at any conference, but PSX was the best conference last year (in my humble, yet not so humble but incredibly biased, opinion), and I feel it'd be the same this year if it wasn't for the glaring FF7 Remake announcement at E3. PSX last year had a bunch of smaller, and strange, announcements as well as the debut of SFV as an exclusive (pretty big deal), and UC4's gameplay reveal (bestest Sony franchise). Arguably, Gamescom 2014 was better.

PGW this year doesn't have the same advantages really because while the content was strong, the presentation was lacking, and it seems everyone was partially confused about various things. PSX isn't going to be too dissimilar content wise from E3/PGW barring the craziness of something like FF7 obviously. It just needs a good and tight presentation.

Basically, I think this is mostly me being overly defensive because fuck E3 and fuck PGW. PSX is now the bestest and greatest. This year, and every other year, hopefully.

Also, fuck Star Wars too. Halo is now the Star Wars.

Not really arguably. Sony's E3 was kinda trash that year from what I recall, and Gamescom was way more hype.

So, you're here. You know someone HAS to ask: Shuhei said Sony isn't working on J-RPGs. How's that work? I remember you saying that Sony was aiming for a larger audience than usual with J-RPGs. Is Shuhei basically saying he doesn't consider currently in development projects J-RPGs that the fanbase would recognize as obviously J-RPGs?

True, however its only been 2 years since launch. I can tell you I never expected Uncharted to become as big as it has back in 2008 so its still too early to judge.

Until Dawn and Bloodborne have the makings to be great franchises throughout this generation however and Horizon is still on its way. I can definitely see them achieving greater commercial success throughout this generation than either Resistance of LBP did during the PS3 days. Also to those saying those developers aren't first party, neither were Insomniac or Media Molecule back in the day. I believe MM weren't acquired until 2010, two years after the launch of LBP.

Best wishes.

LBP was pretty successful so that will be a tough task. MM didn't move on because it wasn't selling.

The pacing of the PGW conference was really off. I don't especially like Jim Ryan as a presenter either.

Also, what the fuck is Matterfall. I hate CG trailers for new IP's and the press release isn't really explaining anything.

Next FS exclusive for PS4 currently in development is a Sony published first party title, like Bloodborne, and is a JRPG. There is another project in development in a similar context which is also a JRPG, and is going to be a Sony published title aka first party. Beyond that, I don't want to delve into anything but it honestly only takes a little common sense to realise that Shu isn't going to tell you what anyone's up to because you happen to ask him a question. Nothing exists until it's officially time for it to exist.

It's a 2D shooting game if I recall correctly. Not much to explain really.

I'm not trying to criticise PSX. Despite all the fanboy crying, I thought it was a good conference last year (though nowhere near as good as Gamescom) but if we're talking about Sony blowing their load, I'm not counting games like SFV or the FFVII remake. I'm sure Sony have some input but Square Enix and Capcom are still calling the shots with those games, no?

WWS unveiled UC4's gameplay, announced MLB and then announced 5 smaller budget games there. It was cool and I loved some of those announcements (especially Wattam and Edith Finch) but again, that's a lot smaller than announcing 4 AAA games there. I just like to have my feet firmly set on the ground, not getting carried away with the crazies talking about Crash Bandicoot or whatever.

PGW was definitely a weird show, almost hard to believe it was done by the same people who do the Gamescom conferences. Kinda seemed like it was thrown together at the last minute, which is why the pacing and presentation were so poor and the crowd didn't help. It was deader than a 2015 WWE show. I liked that they gave PGW a shot but they should just stick with Gamescom from now on.

I see what you mean. Expecting four big first party titles is definitely extreme. There's two as of this moment, and any other first party stuff will be smaller (not that that means the smaller stuff can't be more interesting sometimes). I'd say first party announcements are better than E3, and I also think PGW was better than E3 too in that respect with GT, Detroit, and Matterfall, but I know people have a very strong attachment to TLG that skews perceptions. Mainly because it had been MIA for so long. Plus, Horizon was a pretty great announcement even though people knew way too much about it already that kind of robbed some of its impact. I imagine it'll come down to preference really.

Edit:

And I realized I just forgot something too. PSX should be great actually. More than enough AAA.

4 AAA announcements are realistically... only feasible if Sony only host, like... 2 conferences a year or something.

With 5 conferences a year, it's pretty tough to have a single blow-out event.

The reality is that while WWS has a lot of games in development, at least half of them are not big-budget AAA endeavours. Sony employs a relatively balanced mix of AAA, higher budget AA-ish games (Wild, etc), and smaller titles that won't get retail releases like Resogun, etc.

in terms of AAA, they're not notably more or less than other publishers that only host one/two conferences a year.

It was deader than a 2015 WWE show. I liked that they gave PGW a shot but they should just stick with Gamescom from now on.

It's pretty easy to address this, though. In a pretty scummy way.

I hope to see more of Kill Strain, best thing to come out of PSX imo.

As someone who have moved on from traditional MOBAs and MP shooters, the likes of Kill Strain and Dead Star are right up my alley. I wish I could say the same for Drawn to Death but Jaffe really disappointed me last gen.

Do you consider the "Soulsborne" games to be JRPGs? It may sound like a silly question, but it's a point of contention for some people.

Well, I never used to and preferred calling them Action Adventure titles, but GAF taught me they were two years ago. I also think it makes sense really after having finally played one. They're definitely RPGs, and they're made in Japan so I don't see the issue personally.

Oooooooh boy, I hope this means Bloodborne 2 is a thing in active development.

As far as PGW and gamescom goes, Sony noted that the reason they moved it to PGW this year is because of the timing between E3 and gamescom had decreased, which was true. But gamescom organizers fixed that for next year as it starts on the 17th of August instead of the 5th. And after PGW it became a little obvious that the games they showed played a role in why they chose PGW. Kaz mentioned the first motor race was held in France which is why they chose PGW for the GTS announcement, and then you had Ancel and Cage's games. So I definitely think they'll be moving back to gamescom next year.

While a Bloodborne 2 is great, I'm personally excited for them to try their hand at something slightly different. I'm envious of From fans who really love their games though. They tend to get a lot done, at a high quality, and at a consistent pace.

I could only wish I'd get 4 Naughty Dog games this generation, whereas From is going to get at least that much done.

Imagine being an Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty fan. It must be crazy.

I'd be cool with something different from them as well. Hopefully we get both!

And yeah, I'd honestly be surprised if we get more than two new Naughty Dog titles on PS4.

Thanks for the info Verendus, but does that mean JRPG #2 i.e. SCEJ's last big bet on the genre is (a) not made by SCEJ internal staff and (b) is another Soul-like title?

Souls fan got back to back souls. WHERE'S MY BACK TO BACK UNCHARTEDS?!

Although there is Tomb Raider soon so that might do, even if it's not quite the same. Once again, the Age of One coming through.

Verendus, do you know anything about a possible socom 2 remaster? Boyes, Gio and shahid have all acknowledged it on Twitter at some point or another but that's it. Any chance we get an anouncment at PSX?

Could you just clarify if this is the Level-5 project (wich is already semi-official from Hino's words) or somehting else ?

I don't know how some people are disappointed by PGW, it had 2 AAA SCEWWS titles revealed, honestly if PSX is as good as PGW then we are in one hell of a Year for WWS announcements.

This new FS game in development better be Bloodborne 2, and had gets to be announced next year

I wouldn't mind from working on
Demon's
Soul Sacrifice. Kinda feel like the IP would fit their "Souls" style gameplay.

But Bloodborne sequel would be cool too of course.

That's why I envy Xbox fans can look forward to Halo game every year. I have to wait 2058 years for TLG and don't know will ever get another Team ICO games after that.
Work harder SCEJ!

The split is between "yes i believe him" and "he obviously would not say before announcement anyway"

From is the best.

Does anybody expect God of War gameplay? Cory gives the impression on Twitter it's still early days.

Interested in the Bend game.
