Report: More Women Own Videogame Consoles Than Men in US

FYI I own 4 game consoles, female

The substantial quantity gap between men and women in the videogaming from a decade ago has greatly reduced in modern times, and more women are starting to engage themselves in videogames.

In the US, it seems that as far as console ownerships are concerned, the amount of women owning a gaming platform has far surpassed men.

A survey conducted by Pew Research Center tries to evaluate the popularity of different technological gadgets and their ownerships in the USA. One section focuses on console ownership – mainly Xbox and PlayStation.

According to the survey, 40% of the adults report having a console in their households. What’s interesting is that 42% of American women own a console, whereas ownership for men is slightly less common at 37%.

Households that earn less than $30,000 annually are less likely to own a game console, whereas more than half of the households earning $75,000 and above own at least one.

As far as portable gaming devices are concerned, things are much more balanced.

The survey reports that ownership of portable consoles like the PlayStation Vita or Nintendo’s 3DS have stagnated since 2009, with 14% of American men and women owning at least one such handheld gaming platforms.

The survey confirms the general consensus that videogame popularity has substantially grown among females in the West. The industry’s marketing scope has also shifted noticeably towards the trend, with majority of current generation videogames now containing gender diversity.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Am at work and can't open the survey link, but how many of those are mom's who bought something for their kids and are technically the 'owner' of the console ?

edit: you beat me to my question PdotMichael :p

then you could say the same thing about men, correct?

I own all of my console, they are mine
my brothers girlfriend owns 1, my brother has 5

So 42% of women live in a household with a console. Do they play it? Lots of single moms out there with kids that have a console. Not that lots of women don't play consoles but this is like a survey that finds 30% of men live in a house with tampons.

lol no way this can be true.

I think some of it has to do with live streaming.

Well, that was quick.

Real men play on PC.

But seriously, the data is interesting and I wonder how publishers will explain catering for men in AAA games.

It's either the mom thing or a grandma was the one that bought the Wii all those years ago. The vast majority of console gamers are online these days and, at least in my experience, the vast majority of online console gamers have (and are) wieners.

I don't believe it for a second. Word the questions how you want and I can prove over a lifetime as many men buy tampons as women do.

Oh no no no, please don't think we're (or at least i can speak for myself) trying to discredit anything here.

I've come across a lot of mom's who bought something for their kids and i've answered plenty of people's questions asking for recommendations etc for their kids as well.

This is just a general curiosity and something I've come across a lot personally, which is why I wondered aloud.

You can use that same argument for fathers who would buy/own one for their kids.

Nevertheless it's interesting to see.

It's not a battle between men and women.

But surveys general show how much male centric dedicated video game systems are. So some context what owning means would be interesting.

Well with their lower average wages compared to men I can understand why they'd rather buy a cheap console instead of an expensive high-end gaming PC

I play mine.. gonna argue with an old lady? lol
you assume too much I would never assume that the % of men that own do not play so why do you assume women do not?
I have been gaming longer than some of you are old

This is fantastic. That's surely a sign that video games are becoming more appealing to a wider variety of people, which can only mean that we'll have more different kinds of video games made to better serve those segments of the market, which then means more people might get into video games.

Does this include owning one just for movies and Netflix? Because I have female friends who just have 360s and PS3s for that reason alone.

I said "not that lots of women don't play consoles". I didn't say "stupid women don't play games". I am simply saying a survey of women who play games would be actually useful then the criteria of consoles in households. This is a pretty much worthless survey.

This is why you can't have a rational discussion on gender in gaming. You say one little thing about something being wrong about a feminist video and suddenly you are a Gamergate twat.

My SO has lived with me for 5+ years and has never touched my consoles even once despite ample prodding.

I do find it hard to square with the types of games on consoles, you know shooting and sports for the most part. I guess maybe chix dig killing and sporting more than men.

There really isn't much in the way of public data in terms of actual games play and time spent playing. afaik, Nintendo is the only company that has released that kind of info, and they only do it very rarely.

You can't say this:

When 948 people were surveyed.

Good. Now let them play and leave them alone. Nothing worse that being in an online game, hearing a female teammate, and the listen as the men zero in on her.

"Are you a GURL?!" Etc etc

I can believe it, the amount of women that stream and ask for donations especially on PlayStation Live the Ustream channel are filled with women hosting radio shows, painting, putting on make up all kinds of shit. On twitch streaming asking for donations to purchase their next game ect... It's .a money maker for them and if they look good you do the math.

Wow this is a real surprising stat. I would not have predicted women beating out men on console ownership by 5%.

Edit: Hmmm sample size is a little too small for my liking.

My GF has like six Nintendo 3DSes and two Vitas, that alone beats me

Keep her close son!

WHY CAN NOBODY COME WITH FUCKING ARGUMENTS OR FACTS BEFORE WRITING SHIT LIKE THIS FUCKS SAKE.

/rant

do you really need a written and detailed argument about why its ridiculous to think more females than males are going out to buy and play playstation/xbox? more females are playing video games these days yea, but this surveys claim is batshit insane

They only poled like 900 people for one.
I'm not an expert on statistics, but 900 sounds like it could be sufficient if it's selected well.

Actually:

More of the women we surveyed owned consoles than the men we surveyed
What are you saying?

do you really need a written and detailed argument about why its ridiculous to think more females than males are going out to buy and play playstation/xbox?
To write a survey off, yes absolutely. You don't write off a survey by saying it's ridiculous because it's not how it has been before.

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
900 people is more than enough for an a accurate statistical sampling if the sampling was done correctly.

What is wrong with people in here? Just because it doesn't match up with your personal preferences, it doesn't mean the information is invalid.

Not buying that this is true for the entire US population. I'm pretty surprised that people here actually think it to be true. Are most here female? Wouldn't you think there'd be an even split of women vs men here posting if it were true?

Edit so I hopefully don't get banned since this is apparently a very touchy subject...IF it's true then that's cool. I simply don't believe it to be the case. It hasn't been my experience at all. If women I know own consoles it's because they bought them for someone. That isn't to say that I therefore think that ALL women are only buying consoles for others or that they don't play video games, I'm aware there are many many female gamers. I simply don't believe there are more women buying consoles (for themselves) as there are men doing so.

Edit 2: Blah I've been had. The thread title (because of the article title), is not accurate based on what was ACTUALLY asked in the survey. The actual survey asks the respondent if they "happen to have" a console. That does not automatically imply ownership, or that they actually game on it. There's nothing to see here.
