Obsidian working on a new RPG to be announced "in the next few months"

I'd love to see an Elder Scrolls spin off, can't imagine what an elder scrolls game with decent writing across the board would be like (not just dark brotherhood)

It was going to be their flagship expensive AAA RPG.

Unless I'm mistaken, MS still hasn't filled this gap have they? Scalebound is more action orientated, Sea of Thieves is more of a multiplayer thing, Phantom Dust is dead, Fable has gone off in a totally different direction, they've also completely given up on getting JRPGS on xbox (outside of FF)

Strange seeing Microsoft going sour on RPGS, there's a history of RPG exclusives (or at least timed exclusive) on xbox going back years. Do you know the reasons that Microsoft backed away from Stormlands?

There wasn't a reason given, but ZeniMax also canned their sci-fi RPG so I'm guessing they have development problems with large scale games.

More generally, large scale WRPGs that aren't loot games or MMOs are still a rarity. We've switched out some title, but we are still looking at what, BioWare, Bethesda, CD Projekt, Deus Ex, and then we'll see how they go, but Mordor 2 and Horizon?

Paradox is just a tiny bit bigger than Devolver. I think both are pretty unlikely.

It's not the size of Devolver that makes them seem unlikely, it's the type of games they usually publish. That's why I said, "depending on the size of the project".
If it's something like Pillars, Paradox would make sense. If it's something like Alpha Protocoll, not so much.

Of all of Nintendo's IPs I think FE would suit most to be made into a proper RPG. But knowing Obsidian they're are really good at creating worlds and filling them with lore and background story, so in case it came down to Obsidian making a RPG for Nintendo it would probably be a whole new IP.

Spoiler: It won't be Nintendo

Obsidian's Fire Emblem... I wish.

Elder Scrolls New Tamriel.

Yesterday, I was actually just randomly thinking of that possibility of them, or someone putting out a new ES game to sort of quench the thirst between now and 2020 or 2021 when ES VI comes out. Obviously not happening, but I wouldn't hate it.

That would be so delicious.

I just hope it is a big AAA RPG in the vein of Witcher/New Vegas...

I love Obsidian but they made so many games that don't actually appeal to me lately.

I still think they should do an Archer RPG

If it's a $4 million project now, then yes there are way more options.

I don't see anyone giving them a mammoth AAA budget unless it's a well known IP like Star Wars or Fallout. Even then, they seem to have a poor track record with big projects. So many of them were canned in the past. What was their last big game? Fallout New Vegas and Alpha Protocol?

I don't care what IP, I just hope it's a cRPG. Preferably Turn-Based :)

My dream: Might & Magic XI or Wizardry IX by Obsidian Entertainment^^

Devolver Digital is an entirely legitimate option with their growth as a publisher.

I fail to see how the studio responsible for publishing the Talos Principal (their only TRUE next gen title to date) would be a legitimate option...

They typically stick to Croteam and under the radar indie outfits.

edit: i forgot about Shadow Warrior... Doesn't change my argument though.

The way he talks about the re-purposing if the game, I wouldn't be surprised if it was either a licensed game or IP branded spinoff.

Like, say, if they had pitched a detective rpg it's going to become Batman rpg or if they pitched space pirate rpg it's going to become warhammer rpg.

Since this was originally supported by Microsoft I'm wondering if it will be within the brand that Microsoft have been pushing. I.e. Their games portfolio have always been appealing to the American teenage dude with games mostly being shooters, sports games, or racers. Maybe this IP is within this area.

I hope it's something closer to New Vegas or Alpha Protocol, then Pillar's of Eternity. The latter seems well made, but it was a bit hardcore and combat focused for my liking, and the setting didn't do anything for me.

A new Obsidian RPG is always welcome but I can't help but wonder how good of a story they can pull off without Chris Avellone on board. Pillars was great but the story felt a bit bland and the best parts were the two characters written by Avellone.

Would not be surprised if it was Paradox. Although Pillars was a different type of partnership because of Kickstarter, it's probably the smoothest and most successful relationship they've had with a publisher in the studio's lifetime.

Wasn't Stormlands Sawyer's project? If so that means no Pillars 2 for a while then.

If they're working on Stormlands, does this mean between Armored, Stormlands, and PoE expansion there's zero chance of Fallout 4.5???

That's a lot of work for a studio that almost went under atm
