so, this coming week is F-Zero's 25th Anniversary...

Not really, Miyamoto's answer was that he didn't know how to make the series sell better. People usually quote the F-Zero statement in a vacuum which says something like "we don't have any new ideas for the series" but that same response also mentioned Twilight Princess and sales not being where they had hoped in Japan.

Edit:

I'm not talking about that one. One of the two I was talking about:

I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game. I think where I struggle is that I don’t really have a good idea for what’s new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again. Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero. But I don’t know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero.

There was another one, that I can't find, where he was mentioning how F-Zero was initially very impressive because of the cutting-edge graphics at the time, but better graphics are not enough anymore to impress people and they would need a new idea that would make sense for them to revisit the series, and they haven't found it yet.

Bring it on.

That game is way slower than F-Zero GX.

I just plugged in my GameCube and played GX again the other day. Man what an incredible game! There has never been such a game since. I would be completely happy with the same game with HD graphics. It was perfect!

LOL

Isn't it true? To show off cutting-edge graphics nowadays developers need stuff like The Last of Us or The Order as making human characters look like real people is the toughest challenge to overcome. F-Zero doesn't have a photo-realistic art style, even PS4-level graphics wouldn't be the selling point that mode 7 was back then.

Hey, maybe they'll throw us a bone and toss F-Zero Climax up on the eShop for the anniversary. It's totally playable without knowing Japanese...

Surprise direct where they announce F-Zero UX, an HD version of GX with added courses and online play for the Wii U with new amiibo of the iconic vehicles. DO IT!

I'm surprised they haven't been gung-ho to try an entirely comic artstyle, considering how much importance they've placed on unique art styles recently (Codename Steam, Yoshi's Wooly, Zelda etc). Something like how Marvel vs Capcom handled it would be a good fit and stand out in their lineup.

I'd be happy with even just F-Zero X on Wii U virtual console at this point -_-
But really I doubt it'll be mentioned at all - just doesn't sell well enough.
Maybe we'll see a revival in a few decades like Kid Icarus hahahaha...

To be obvious here it is also the 25th Anniversary of Pilotwings.
But that was bought back as a 3DS launch game using Assestflip Island

The biggest thing to celebrate both I feel is releasing both the N64 VC ones on Wii U (since Pilotwings 64 never hit Wii VC that would be nice) but more likely is a 25% off Pilotwings resort and F-Zero GP legend.

My favorite F-Zero neglect was about a year go when NOE forgot to upload F-Zero GP Legend (or was it open the Miiverse community) on its release :(

As for Miyamoto. I remember one time he said something like in-house they had taken F-Zero as far as they wanted and couldn't come up with anything else. Still funny that 8 entries in they'll have ideas for Mario Kart for years to come but two F-Zero is "right, we're done".

If they soil it with powerups and wipeout controls it will be a disappointment regardless.

There are no powerups beyond boost energy when I played it, and the controls are imho somewhere between Wipeout and FZero.

I am certainly excited for the game, it's by no means a real F-Zero or Wipeout but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

I also really love this gif, imagine this with 2015 graphics ... would be crazy.

I get my SNES out every now and again to play F-Zero, its probably my favourite game of all time! Remember when it launched in the UK I was so excited.

I mean, GX's developer has also been dead for 10 years.

I'll buy Fast Racing Neo, but that title...

Next up, Shoot Gun Neo and Hit Ball Tennis.

Let's all remember that time Sega outdid Nintendo so much at their own game that the franchise died for it.

Man GX was great.

Found F-Zero GX last year for $3 at a game resale shop. I had wanted to try it for years but never got around to it but for $3 why the fuck not?

Game is simply incredible, and besides the Metroid Prime games is probably the best technical showcase on the Gamecube. The sense of absolute, incredible speed is untouchable. It's a shame that the game's difficulty probably turned a lot of people off, but I don't think we've seen the last of F-Zero. With the NX heavily rumored to have a shared games library, the Mario Kart team could probably put out two games per generation instead of just 1, and I don't expect them to just put two Mario Kart's on the same system.

Although they don't really even need to make a new one...They could easily just do a quick HD remaster of the game, put it on the eShop, and call it a day. Everybody wins.

To everyone saying that Nintendo doesn't care about F-Zero anymore and that the franchise is dead...did you forget about THIS?

Nintendo asked Criterion to make a new F-Zero game. It didn't work out but they were interested in making a new game...so I don't really get all the "RIP" comments in this thread.

F-Zero's in a weird spot because I'm more of a fan of GX than X, and that means what I really want is for SEGA to make a new F-Zero, not Nintendo. So it's even less likely. I mean, hey, if Nintendo has some other dev in their back pocket that can re-create or top that kind of tight experience, power to them, but that's just as unlikely.

You mustve been terrible at wipeout....

As a very big F-Zero fan, playing wipeout afterwards(despite playing it long before F-zero) felt awful to me, the controls in comparison feel clunky and as though you are fighting your machine all the time instead of the track or your opponents.

[FAST racing neo pics]

please, can this stay out of a F-Zero thread?

It's annoying because that game is not going to be a proper replacement for F-Zero.

People see FAST racing neo and think about F-Zero because both games are about going fast :p However, there have always been other futuristic racers, and we did act like we didn't need F-Zero just because of that.

If, with "F-Zero" , we're talking about the most recent 3D F-Zero game (F-Zero GX), it seems like FAST Racing Neo is not going to play like F-Zero at all. The handling system is clearly completely different between the two, as are the game mechanics, track design, the size of your ship in relation to the track, the number of drivers on the track, etc...

X was the base for GX. We wouldn't have had GX without X.

Also, nintendo had to make X for the nintendo 64 AND the nintendo 64 controler, while sega had the gamecube console (more modern hardware)/controler (analog triggers). So it doesn't seem like a very fair comparison :p Considering that X was a nintendo 64 game, nintendo did great.

(i love GX too)

My F-Zero wish list goes something like this:
(quoting myself)

Number 1. new F-Zero game developed by Amusement Vision!!

Amusemen Vision died in 2004 ;_; so we'll have to go with option two:

Number 2. new F-Zero game developed by nintendo EAD.

wait... EAD also died not long ago!! dammit. We'll have to go with option three:

Number 3. new F-Zero game developed by nintendo EPD.

that must be it.

p.s. F-Zero GX was released more than 10 years ago, so i'd only care about a new one if it's better than GX ;p

I'm not big into racing games, but I always really liked F-Zero. I fantasize about a new F-Zero arcade game where the screen wraps around you and the entire thing moves. Would be inctedible if done right.

I absolutely love Fzero, X and Maximum velocity (that one for what it was....a GBA launch title).
GX turned Fzero into something that was actively trying to push casual players away.
I know people like being all hardcore and everything but seriously I'd rather have something entirely new than something as obtuse as that again.
Music was a huge letdown too.
And what killed Fzero wasn't GX but the GBA games that absolutely bombed and the TV show.
I think that's what they're talking about when they say that they're not happy with what Fzero became sales-wise.

Bring back Fzero X and the expansion pack with online sharing.
Also 30 players online need to happen!

My favourite racing series. Was really into Time Attack back in the early 2000s, had some quite respectable times on MFO for FZX in particular. F-Zero was actually one of the first topics that got me posting on gaming message boards, so there's that!
